« Last post by skwire on December 26, 2013, 08:23 PM »
NANY 2014 Entry Information

Application Name Spews
Supported OSes Windows XP, Vista, and 7.  Does not work on Windows 8/10.
Web Page Website
Download Link Download
Author Jody Holmes (Skwire Empire)

Description
Spews stands for "S* Process Excluding Wallpaper Switcher" (the S can stand for whatever you want: Skwire, Sucky, Super, Stupid, etc.) and is designed to automatically switch your wallpapers on a configurable schedule.  Simply add your image folders, choose your wallpaper options and click the Enable button at the bottom.  You can check/uncheck the images paths as needed; only checked paths will be scanned for images.

Spews also has a feature that automatically suspends the wallpaper switching if it detects any process names you configure in the Exclusions section.  This can be beneficial, for instance, when running games whose graphics corrupt if the wallpaper is changed.

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / NANY 2014 Release - Earl
« Last post by skwire on December 26, 2013, 08:20 PM »
NANY 2014 Entry Information

Application Name Earl
Supported OSes Windows XP and later
Web Page Website
Download Link Download
Author Jody Holmes (Skwire Empire)

Description
Earl is a commandline application that allows you to convert .URL files into standard Window shortcut files (.LNK). This can be helpful if you use an application that doesn’t understand .URL files but does understand standard Windows shortcuts. For instance, some icon docks won’t handle a .URL file dropped on them, but can work with regular Windows shortcuts.  If you're looking to convert Steam .URL files, please use my SteamURLConverter application instead.

Screenshots

main.png

main2.png

Usage

Installation
Download the zip file and extract its contents into a new folder.  Run Earl.exe to start the application.

  • Drag & drop a .URL file onto the executable.
  • A standard Windows shortcut file will be created in the same directory as the .URL file.
  • Alternately, this app can add a shortcut to your “Send to” folder so you can process multiple .URL files by using the “Send to” option in your right-click menu.

Uninstallation
Delete the folder you unzipped it to.  The application doesn't write any of its settings to the registry.

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013 Release: sImgurUploader
« Last post by skwire on December 26, 2013, 07:56 PM »
I still don't understand the difference?  Are both tags the same thing?
Do they look the same?

Apologies, I should have been more specific.  kunkel321 had asked for the image URL to be wrapped like this:

[img]http://i.imgur.com/ErDIg9W.jpg[/img]

I had initially coded his request like this:

[url]http://i.imgur.com/ErDIg9W.jpg[/url]

Does that help clear things up?

What's the difference between "img" tag and "url" tag?

It was a screwup on my part.  kunkel321 had asked for [img] tags and I initially coded it (wrongly) as [url] tags.

The option I wanted doesnt seem to exist at all for windows: Dont enlarge, but reduce if necessary.

Ah, that makes more sense: Scale only larger images

Let me see what I can do.   :D

Thank you, tomos, MilesAhead, rgdot, Shades, and Cranio for your naming suggestions.  And thank you, 4wd, for yours, which made me literally laugh out loud.  That was one for the ages.

1) is it possible to add the option "Fit"? This reduces larger images to screen size - but doesnt enlarge anything.
(The Windows 7 options are Fill / Fit / Stretch / Tile / Center.)

How does Fit differ from the Scale option already in the app?  If I choose an image smaller than my screen resolution, and have Windows apply it using the Fit option, the image is enlarged.

2) would it be possible to change the browse dialogue, to an open file type one. More info here:

It doesn't appear this is possibly natively in AHK.  All the workarounds I found are inelegant hacks, too.  In my dev build, I changed it so the folder dialog opens at the last chosen folder, though.  Maybe that will help.

3) I'm wondering would it be possible to disable a folder rather than have to delete it. If #2 above is implementable, this would not be of such big interest :-)

In my dev build, I've changed it so you can now check/uncheck entries in the listview.  That is, only checked rows will be evaluated for images.  Also, after the image list is compiled, the application does remove duplicate images from its internal list.  Here's the latest look:

^ WallpaperWhipper (?)

Hmmm...not bad.   :D

For the record, ConstanceJill and I came up with PEWS (Process Exclusive Wallpaper Switcher).  I'm not completely sold on it so keep the ideas coming, though.  =]

Nice app!

Thank you.   :)

I actually thought it didnt work, but then I realised I had to click "Enable Wallpaper switching" at the bottom :-[
I'll bet that's why you made that button so big - so as I wouldn't miss it. (But I still managed to...)

I'll be adding an icon to the button as well.  The GUI redesign is finished and, with ConstanceJill's testing today, I think we have a pretty decent app.

The resizing is being done quite well.

I'm using the standard Microsoft GDI+ library for the resizing so it should be fairly decent.

Last requests from ConstanceJill sound very good

Both of those requests are in the latest build I have.

As an aside, can anybody thing up a better name for this application?  I suck at naming.

So you have another NANY entry? ;)

@Ath: Let's see if I can get it working for ConstanceJill first.

@ skwire : I tested the prototype, pointed it to a folder with a few pictures, set it to change every 1 minute and clicked start, but whether the exlusionary process I added is running or not, it doesn't seem to actually change the wallpaper even after waiting several minutes ^^'

@ConstanceJill: That's odd.  I developed and tested this in W7/64 and also tested it under an XP/32 VM and my wife's W7/64 laptop.  Now...there is one thing, under my W7/64 box.  For some reason, when a wallpaper is changed, it doesn't get repainted properly unless I drag a window around the desktop (or maximise, then minimise) some window.  Could that be the issue you're seeing?  FWIW, the XP/32 VM doesn't exhibit this issue, nor does my wife's W7/64 laptop.  BTW, for testing purposes, you can use a float value like 0.1 to switch walls every six seconds.  This part of the GUI will be changed in a future build.

Anybody else give this prototype a try?  At any rate, Merry Christmas, all!

Again, this is a prototype to test functionality.  That is, the GUI is somewhat thrown together and would not be the final look.  The interface and operation should be pretty simple but please let me know if you have any issues.

Doh!  Sorry, Bziur, I must have missed your post.  No, you cannot delete a file with Frameless.

FWIW, version 1.0.1.10 works fine for me.  I was able to perform everything you described here.  I did five test captures in a row without issue.

General Software Discussion / Re: Moving notes from Keynote to Evernote
« Last post by skwire on December 19, 2013, 06:54 AM »
The solution was easy.
Evernote lets you set up a folder to monitor which will import anything you put there.
Keynote allowed me to export all my notes as rtf files into that folder.

Slick solution, vbmark.

Bada-bing-bada-boom and Bob's your uncle.

I had no idea I had an Uncle Bob.  I probably ought to send him a Christmas card, eh?   :P

Just in case I decide to recursively rename Do.lnkz back to Do.lnk...
...can you please remind me how to do that?

Any of the myriad of file renamers out there will do the trick.  Find one you like...
1670
Can Chris or anyone explain why it's hard to handle shortcuts?

It's not a matter of difficulty.  The fact is, shortcuts are files, too (.LNK).  So, you can either move them like a normal file or you can extract information from them (target, working dir, etc.) and then use that information.  The problem is that, unless you write the code so that it extracts that information, it will be treated like a normal file.

Anyway, I just exit when playing Civ V, the crash is a reminder to do so. Ha!

;D  Sorry I couldn't help more, GHammer.  If I ever buy Civ V on Steam, I'll test it out here.

Would you mind computing the MD5 checksum for the Resize.exe you have just to make sure this hasn't been modified?  The one from the above download is: 01353FE34350AB6B7CBD503C7545AD54
01353fe34350ab6b7cbd503c7545ad54 (mine)
01353FE34350AB6B7CBD503C7545AD54 (yours)
Looks good?
Can also upload, it's small

Yep, that was my intention.  I just wanted to make sure we had a known good file.  Thanks for testing.
1674
did a test run - worked a treat

Changed exe/path in the script - ran it
Dropped shortcuts on GUI
'Resize' opened with the correct filepaths showing
Settings are saved so new images output to specified folder

Many thanks skwire - I seem to be sorted :-*

Right on.  =]

For anyone interested in the 'Resize' app - the website in screenshot below no longer exists.
I just found this version from 2008 but I haven't tried it yet (about.com link) [seems to be same version as mine]

Any chance of being able to retain and display past N days worth of predictions (perhaps prepended to what is fetched)?

Hmmm...I think this is probably out of scope for sWeather.  Also, I'm not even sure where to put such information on sWeather's already cluttered interface.
