Still no idea about what could be wrong :)

Quick way to eliminate AddOns is hold down the Shift key when starting FF.  It should come up with no extensions running.  If it works normally then one of the AddOns is the culprit.

Btw: cyberfox with the same tabs uses less CPU, but more memory :) So I may move there permanently.

I kept forgetting to check out Cyberfox, so I'm trying to do that now!

Edit: It says it doesn't support my version of Windows. (XP). Oh well.

Firefox x64 is coming out in the Stable Channel on version 40.0 release anyway.  The last few stable releases of FF have been good.  I find myself only using CF occasionally nowadays.

If you find a speed dial that doesn't big startup please let me know.  I use CF x64 and Super Start.  But it takes 30 seconds to load and fill the speed dial on startup.  :(

May be you can write a desktop wrapper for this:

   http://www.theregist...to_white_hats_vxers/

:)

It looks a bit ambitious.  :)

Maybe there is a FF extension tha automates loading VirusTotal or something.  I didn't think to look.

Edit:  Actually VirusTotal will accept one file dropped on the input line.  It seems susceptible to hanging though.  So much for automating it.  Oh well, I never liked av anyway.  :)

Stephen, a big unclear item is she can't afford a mainline internet service. So a bunch of your ideas fall sideways.

I wonder if there is some kind of "Internet for All" initiative in her area?

I found this one that runs on the desktop.

http://www.ghacks.ne...-antivirus-programs/

Last updated in 2011 as far as I know.  Plus it seems to require a lot of work to configure.  May be worth it if one needs to do a alot of scans with various av programs.

Apparently you need to install and configure various av that have a CLI and program the command lines and parameters.

it seems the plugins for the new 4.40 were withdrawn; the links are empty and I can only find the 4.38 plugins

I found some dead links myself.  I guess there will be some confusion for some time.  I am running the 32 bit 4.40 until things shake out.  I just thought I would pass along the article link.  I visit that 64 bit site every day.

If her vision isn't the best it may be cool to try to get some free audio books.  Also if she lives alone or is alone quite a bit the voice reading the book can be like company.  Many elderly with vision problems listen to talk radio but in some areas they mainly have sports talk.  Probably not interesting listening for an elderly female.

I've had Windows 10 for almost a week. In that time I 've gotten 3 Windows Updates, not including Windows Defender Definition Updates.  Is this the slow ring and is Windows Insider the fast ring?

I don't know.  But from the posts I see things are going to be all over the lot for awhile.  I don't even like to enable auto update on Firefox never mind the entire OS.  But I guess I am your basic curmudgeon hobbyist neanderthal whose ossified bones will be featured in online displays when everyone has WiFi brain implants.  Under my(still handsome) photo the caption will read "Insisted on an installed OS from an ISO image."  All the four year old children point and laugh.

« Last post by MilesAhead on August 04, 2015, 06:54 AM »

The following yoga pose seems like a useful approach (I mean; for the hands and upper body; doing the feet like that would be optional),

I have a theory that anything that aids in reducing stress is good.  When I was a mechanic there was a miserable day in August that magnified the usual working over hot engines and being on my feet on cement all day.  By the time I arrived at my girlfriend's place my back was killing me and my feet hurt.  I was just  miserable all around.

She told me that she could massage my feet and I would feel 1000% better in only a few minutes.  Due to all the movies with guys drinking champagne out of slippers etc. I thought this seemed weird and wanted no part of it.  She said "I absolutely 100% guarantee if you try it you will be glad you did."  She only said that about twice a year and when she did she was never wrong so I gave in.  After about 10 minutes of slight pressure of the thumbs into the arches of my feet, my feet, legs, back and attitude was no longer sore.  I try to recommend it to people.  It is extremely easy to do.  But because of the champagne slipper foot fetish thing, people weird out right away.

If you have someone willing to apply this type of massage I highly recommend giving it a try.  If you think about it, especially if you work on your feet all day, that weight pressing down on the arches constantly creates stress that you don't notice until it is relieved.  It is like a jack hammer when they repair the sidewalk outside your house.  After a few hours your brain tunes it out, until the noise stops.  Then you realize what a burden it was.

Anyway, even if you have to pay for a massage ask the masseuse if she will do arch massage therapy instead of the shoulders/back routine.  It is way more effective.

Anyone know of, or is it even possible, to drag and drop multiple files, on a web form of a multi-virus scan site?

One at a time is way tedious.  I only have MBAM installed and it insists on doing the preliminary system check even if I just did that a moment ago.  And anyway it would be cooler to do something like VirusTotal if I didn't have to do individual uploads.

This is the one I got for my Laptop.  I see the price has increased to $7.49 now.

I have had it for about a year and a half.  No complaints.

I think Win 10 all over is ugly, and the least ugly part is the ugly taskbar notification area!  :-[

 (see attachment in previous post)

If I didn't know any better I'd think you installed Win 1.0 instead of Win 10. What a step backwards in icon design!

What is up with that?  Are there actually smart phones with b/w screens?

Apparently I just needed to RTFM

I do not know if I would admit to reading the manual.  That kind of self incrimination could land you in  a Homeland Security DB.

I don't know what programs to pick.  But this may be a good resource of free programs that were popular enough to go commercial:

Most are likely old enough to run on XP

I think you're right, Miles; eventually it will of course be their best operating system so far - which is why I for the first time ever was maneuvering to be first in line.

BUT the comparison in my head is the car company launching a new model, and when people ask why there are no passenger seats, or why this or that obviously is missing, the answer is something like "Oh, we will add them eventually". Setting a fixed  date for launching a new model is by itself foolish, or what the proper term may be, because it puts a date above fixing errors, and therefore also puts a date above both the customer and the company's trustworthiness / credibility / reliability / integration / honour / something ...

Well, I am the poor one, and they are the ga$illionaires, so who am I to speak.

I agree wih you that the new distribution model, having people hang online while the system updates, necessitates having beefed up servers to handle the deluge.  The coders cannot push back the deadline just because of a few orders of magnitude of bugs/unfinished features.  :)  So they push ahead.

Also I am waiting for the "mandatory update" system to break thousands of computers at once.  It seems inevitable.

I am usually skeptical of new Windows releases.  I think this is fed by the insistence on hiding the settings every time they change the name of the Windows flavor.  But after I get done dragging my feet I usually like it.  I hope it is also true this time.  :)

It does kind of crack me up all the emphasis on a cascading menu.  Some real research that spawned lots of useful and still used innovations:

Skinner always reminds of this guy, lol. https://en.wikipedia.../wiki/Walter_Skinner

Yeah, when I watched X-Files I thought that was a curious name.  btw I loved the episode where Pusher got the secretary to kick Skinner's ass.  Hilarious.

So chimps dig Windows start menu.

Hmm, B.F. Skinner references never peter out completely.  There may just be a few years between them.  :)

A friend of mine studied Skinner as his area of expertise.  The last time I saw him he showed me a hand written letter from Skinner accepting him as an intern.  My friend is probably retired by now.  Time whips by when I am not paying attention.
