Yeah they're already talking about advertising and how it shows up as a note. If it actually has a central storage accessible to all where to dump files then it would be adding something. We'll see.

I was thinking a plugin called FolderList for FARR would be desirable. It basically would return the folders for the query you put in. that would stop my need for FolderScout.

good job. idea: instead of the ini filename, use %1%, then use your own extensino .gst for example, and then you can drag and drop .gst files on your script to execute them. this way you can use multiple .gst files. And associate .gst with your executable for double clicking.

All these portable applications are really nice. However they don't shop up in the add / remove programs. They don't have any shortcuts. You have to browse to them every time. Your program launcher don't pick them up. Enter ZipInstaller:

The ZipInstaller utility installs and uninstalls applications and utilities that do not provide an internal installation program. It automatically extracts all files from the Zip file, copies them to the destination folder you select, creates shortcuts in the start menu and in your desktop, and adds an uninstall module to allow you to automatically remove the software in the future.

This utility was originally developed to install the utilities in NirSoft Web site, but you can use it for installing utilities and applications from other sources, like the utilities provided in SysInternal Web site, Funduc Software, and many others.
Generally, this utility can install properly almost any software compressed in Zip files that doesn't provide an install/uninstall module.
http://www.nirsoft.n...t/utils/zipinst.html

It can even install itself! lol Download the small exe and the zip file with the help, then use the zipinstaller exe to install the zip file :D It can also add a context menu entry to zip files you it's even easier to install your favourite portable app permanently.

Shouldn't be too hard to make for example with AutoHotkey, if it was based on text files. However it would be so much nicer if you could drag applications to the "groupstarter" and manipulate groups from within a program. ;)

Multirun looks promising though, might be useful for my dj setup (traktor, icecast, winamp, shoutcase, browser) or web development ritual. Nice find.

I guess the issue I am having is when would you want to use tags?
There are photo organisation programs that I use already to adjust photos, my music player manages my collection etc.
If I have a series of different files that belong together, they probably belong under a project.
I think if files are related but not as directly to belong to a common folder, it might be useful.  But when is that the case?
When would I want to use tagging?

1583
Sounds robust, when I find a need for tagging I'll definately have a closer look :)

The way I use FARR's directory search feature is if for example I need an application/folder in program files but it's not in the start menu, or running a utility that doesn't come with an installer (my utility folder is too big to be included by default in farr searching): i'd do c:\scr\auto to get to c:\scripts\autoruns\ for example.

Although it seems if i type 'auto\' without quotes, it finds folders in program files even though program files is not enabled in the searchable folders hmm.  :o

However pressing F7 and typing auto is faster. And as the results are indexed, it doesn't have to search the actual folders, just the indexed file. it's slightly more convenient. I don't have to worry where the folder is (c:\, d:\, 12 subfolders deep). So it's mostly a matter of shorter syntax and slightly quicker performance.

I guess when FARR adds in indexing, or some syntax shortcut so I could type '\auto' to search folders with the phrase auto in them, then I might dump Folderscout :) Also I use a dialogue box extender which works well for favourite folders. I hope that explains things a bit?

Yes, I took a look at it also but uninstalled it because it will only work with Explorer. I prefer to use another file manager.
filemanager.png
You can specify your own file manager.

Under Filefolder: You can reduce the amount of characters to start a search with from 3 to 2 to make it more useful. To compensate, also reduce the maximum folders to 100, you're unlikely going to look past a list longer than that anyway.

I just discovered FolderScout today, basicallly FolderScout does a one-time index of the folders of your drives (takes about 10 sec), then keeps track of changes in the background.

From then on, you can call up FS with F7, then start typing - folderscout instantly shows a list of only those folders with the query as part of their name! Also does recent folders and recent documents.

folderscout.png

The help file is a bit full of marketing, and it doesn't work for mapped drives yet, but works as a great team with my other favourite apps:

Find and Run Robot as the main launcher to quickly software launching
Folderscout for quick folder launching.
Locate32 for quick file finding.
Cathy for quick cd-collection browsing.

Between these 4 i think the whole spectrum is covered. Found it on ShellCity

works well on servers too for efficient web developers.  :o keep the old version compatible while moving all the files to the new location.

if they have 100 licenses per program then with 10x100 = 1000 licenses. I suspect they are talking rom a user's view.

Fantastic find (and ccodinghorror is great too). good reading for anyone involved in team development.

Looks like using Doublekiller Free (size and CRC only), then mediamonkey free, then musicIP will get rid of nearly all duplicates (Ctrl-D to delete files).

General Software Discussion / remove duplicate songs (mp3/ogg)
« Last post by justice on July 08, 2007, 06:23 AM »
I'm looking for a good application for listing and removing duplicate songs in my music library. Due to some organisation functions of certain music library managers and syncs I now have too many duplicates to manually weed through it.

I have looked at itunes, musicip, but am thinking a dedicated application will probably work best.
Itunes lists different mixes of files as duplicates (scary), and musicip does not delete the files (just removes them from library) and takes ages to validate my library (due to duplicates).

Best match would be an app that matches on partial id tags, file names, and/or track time.
i guess if there's no id tags and the song is incomplete it couldn't check on track time either, but removing all identical tracks would be a good start.

any apps that are free or fully functional trial to try out?

the updating process from version 2 to 3 does not work with dcupdater on my machine. It's stuck at "got update file" and then opens your homepage in Opera.
I'll just manually update but in case it's recurring, you best know.

F-secure blacklight is part of my F-secure Anti-Virus for WorkStations 7 installation and probably more version 2007 and v7 of their software. The performance is better than version 5 and it even reports and corrects incorrect windows security settings which was quite a surprise.

DcUpdater / Bug - column resize loads up dcupdater website
« Last post by justice on July 06, 2007, 04:57 AM »
Double clicking on the column divider (for example between description and installed version) loads up the DcUpdater website after having adjusted the column width successfully to the text contained. I was only expecting the columns to be resized.

What does the Properties... right click menu option do? It doesn't appear to do anything at he moment. If I want the properties of a result I have to go through Shell Context Menu -> Properties... instead. Might be a bug then.

And Search for All Matches... must be like a refresh of some sorts? Running the query again in case extra results have been added? Maybe this should be renamed refresh results in that case. It now comes across like farr does not search all matches by default.

Ooops ok take that post as a good starting point for resources ;)

How it works
Why risk downloading cracked software which could contain viruses, spyware or could even damage your system when you can get it directly from Serial Dealers? Every software available is legally licensed to us to resell from the developer and available to members at a fraction of the cost of normal selling price.

Please check the Certified reseller links to the lower left of this page to verify SerialDealers approved reseller status.

We purchase the software in massive bulk quantities directly from the developer to offer our members unbeatable prices. The software is the same "full" software available at the developers web site and is not limited, a trial version or crippled in any way. It is the same software you would receive if you purchased directly from the developers site. The level of support included may however be different. Please make sure you read the descriptions of each software before making a purchase.

The only conditions on the software we offer members are as follows:
Not for commercial use*
Not for resale
Only for personal use
Refunds only available for faulty software. (This does not affect your statutory rights)
Basic Membership is absolutely free, but becoming a Gold member has many benefits included. There is a limited amount of licenses initially available to basic members, while gold members have access to 1000s of licenses and should not have problems making their purchase.

All new software is released to gold members first and will become available to basic members when gold members have had the chance to purchase. If we run out of licenses for our gold members then we try and negotiate further bulk discounts with the developer on behalf of our gold members.

*subject to terms provided from each developer.
Interesting, but I don't trust it I guess i do now. They're buying in bulk licenses, then sell it for really cheap. Where do they make profit?

edit: Seems they're certified resellers, see http://www.nagarsoft...s/certification.html for example.

I would love to see a plugin to integrate locate32 into farr. There has been many requests for this so this would probably be one of the most popular plugins! See here for example.

Locate32's sources are available so that shouldn't stop you! I'd be happy to donate a few credits to the best solution.

As said before in this thread, Total Commander has a plugin for this, so perhaps if someone would be more interesting in supporting TC plugins as FARR plugins indirectly it would incorporate this request.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Use locate32 with Farr

No jmj it doesn't unfortunately. That would require a plugin request it here. Would love to see that done though.

At the moment it launches locate with the query, so you get a locate32 window with the result from your farr query.
