Koonta, thank you very much for handling that and making sure they fixed their false positive
Much appreciated.

Dealing with false positives is sooo frustrating and it happens quite a bit to us, so any help in getting it taken care of is really appreciated.

Site/Forum Features / Reorganizing Mini Review Area
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2010, 09:29 PM »
I moved the user mini-reviews up to a main category board, and official reviews as a child board, reflecting the fact that the mini reviews are more active recently.
I would still like to revive the main review section soon.

it would be nice to hear about other validator tools that people use -- it seems to me like it would be nice to have an all in one validator tool that supported finding empty tags, etc.  might be a good NANY 2011 project if a good free program for this doesn't exist yet.

Newsletter for September 16th, 2010
"Prepare the Sleds"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hello dear readers.  Yet another month has gone by, and you know what that means, time for another DC newsletter filled with magical surprises and ghosts from future's past.

The most important thing to talk to you about this month is our NANY 2011 event, whose December 31st deadline is fast approaching.  NANY stands for "New Apps for the New Year" and it's where everyone on DC is asked to help celebrate the new year by participating in the release of new free software applications.  If you're a coder, we want you to pledge to release a new program as part of our NANY event -- and if you're not a coder, we want you to try to find a way to help out the coders, by volunteering to test beta versions, help think up ideas, and just in general share your talents!

By the time December 31st rolls around you are going to be sick of hearing me talk about NANY so you might as well unsubscribe to the newsletter now if you're getting that feeling already.  NANY is one of the funnest things we do in DC, it's our big winter online holiday party, and we love to get in the spirit of it.  I hope some of you will be inspired to make your first posts on our forum and say hello and join us in the festivities.  Everyone is welcome -- and please help us spread the word to your coder friends.

This year I'm determined to release at least one big new application, and hopefully more than that; I even started a poll (link below) to help me choose which application to write.  And if you are a coder, I'm really still hoping to see some new coders stop by and maybe collaborate with me on a project or two so we can really make this year's NANY special.  In particular, I've been getting into board games and board game designing recently (you'll see a couple of threads highlighted below that reflect that), and one of the possible projects I'd like to get help working on for NANY is card/board game design utilities, and a possible online library for prototyping new games.

2. NANY 2011 Update and Call for Volunteers

The NANY 2011 deadline of December 31st is fast approaching!  If you're a coder, start thinking about some new program you can get working on.  Or, stop by and look for ideas and collaborators and helpers.  If you're not a coder, why not volunteer to help out in other ways.  Anyone can get involved with the NANY event by offering their talents to the hard working entrants to help with the ancillary aspects of their entries. Volunteering on NANY projects is a great way for everyone to get involved with the Event, coders and non-coders alike! Full details are available on the Call for Volunteers thread, or you may consider helping with specific requests:

If you're just a keen software user you may like to check out the new NANY Pledges, and the other exciting updates on the NANY 2011 board:

3. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, regardless of your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

4. DC Stuff

New member-written software updates and other writings posted since the last newsletter:

5. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Let's find out..

6. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

7. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware-related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into two sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

8. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

9. September Discounts and Giveaways

following up on what fenix said..

great to see IE following the google chrome lead of making a non-standard minimalistic user interface that makes everything harder to use but looks prettier in screenshots.

what you are asking for is readily available everywhere and we've talked about it in the past plenty of times.

for example: http://www.newegg.co...d=1&name=5.25%22

just make sure it has an open front for optical drives and it will hold those rack systems fine. i've used one for many of years and like it a lot.

personally i'd much rather pay higher prices and have a waiter who isn't trying to be fake nice hoping to get a good tip, and just being like a normal person on a job.  i very much dislike the fake game of trying to kiss the ass of the customers hoping they will give you a good tip.

if we follow the logic of tipping to it's natural conclusion, we'd be tipping everyone -- cops, airplane pilots, bus drivers, etc.  i don't think that's a good idea.

ok, i see i was mis-remembering 8mb as 8gb.
and i didn't initially think there was much benefit to maintaining memory on power cycle, but i guess for OS stuff it could result in a faster boot, possibly.

what im a bit confused about is: don't modern hard drives (at least desktop ones) have large ram caches in the 4/8gb range already?  how is this different?

Living Room / A Hybrid hard drive gets a glowing recommendation
« Last post by mouser on September 15, 2010, 09:19 AM »
Looks like hybrid hard drives might start to become the next big thing:

Simply put a Hybrid HDD is a mechanical drive with some NAND flash on it that is automatically used by the drive to store data for quicker access. A hybrid drive really just attempts to do what my setup of two drives (SSD + HDD) does manually: put small, frequently used data on NAND flash and put larger, less frequently used data on platters.

In theory you get the best of both worlds, the overall capacity of a HDD and (most of the time) the performance of an SSD... Seagate's Momentus XT should become the standard hard drive in any notebook shipped... Compared standard 2.5" drives, the Momentus XT will set you back an additional $50 - 90 depending on the capacity point. The added cost is absolutely worth it.

« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2010, 11:56 AM »
just to clarify, this isnt a problem with FARR launching files, it's a problem where the a plugin that has special kinds of results stops handling those results.

it sounds like you have identified what's going wrong -- though i've never heard of this problem before.

one clue that would be good to know is:
is it only the network connections plugin that this happens to? or does it happen to any other plugin that handles results specially?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / NANY 2011 Poll To Help Decide Mouser's App
« Last post by mouser on September 13, 2010, 10:57 PM »
I've already committed to finishing up a large web application for NANY 2011, but I've also committed to writing a new large desktop application.

But i'm having a hard time deciding what desktop application to write.  So i'm asking for some feedback about which program you'd most like to see.

I've listed 4 ideas that are currently on my mind, but i'm leaving the details vague.

  • Exercise/Workout Builder - This is an idea to let people build custom workouts from modules that others build
  • Webcam Recording/Diary Utility - I have written a fairly extensive image and video browsing/recording tool for another project and was trying to think of a way to reuse some of the code and create something new; in some sense the easiest since i have much of the code, but it's the one idea that also needs to figure out what exactly novel it would do.
  • Touchscreen Pictureframe App - The idea for this is a program you would run on a touchscreen monitor mounted on the wall in a picture frame; it would let you configure screensavers, visual demo effects, special web pages, etc.; and easily cycle through them, kind of like an iphone style user interface that let you navigate between modules.
  • Card/Board Game Protoyping Tools - I've already written several scripts for board game designers to help prototype games; this idea is to take this to the next level.

So does anything on this list grab your attention?  Use the poll above to vote, and thanks for your input!
