And in terms of dll injection detection and other (outbound filtering) technologies, it seems to me that Online Armor should be part of anyone's "trying list"...

Living Room / Re: Mini How-To: How to make your PC go to silent standby (S3 mode)
« Last post by Armando on January 26, 2008, 04:41 PM »
Well, keep in mind that a laptop in standby will drain your battery. Slowly, but surely.

Yep, that's for sure...

"But I always leave my laptop on wall power when I'm home!" - don't, you reduce battery lifetime.

I know, I know...  :) But I actually read some contradictory information on the subject. Usually though people agree to say that it doesn't matter that much :

Removing the battery from the laptop when running on fixed power protects the battery from heat. With the concern of the battery overheating and causing fire, a spokesperson for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises to eject the battery of affected laptops and to run the machines on a power cord. It should be noted that on a power outage, unsaved works will be lost.
The question is often asked, should the laptop be disconnected from the main when not in use? Under normal circumstances, it should not matter with lithium-ion. Once the battery is fully charged, no further charge is applied. However, there is always the concern is malfunction of the AC adapter, the laptop or the battery.
(Isidor Buchmann, How to prolong lithium-based batteries, http://www.batteryun...y.com/parttwo-34.htm)

Connect the computer to an electrical outlet when possible because battery life is largely determined
by the number of times the battery is used and recharged
.
• Place the computer in standby mode or hibernate mode when you leave the computer unattended for
long periods of time. See "Power Management Modes" on page 41 for more information about standby
and hibernate modes.
(from my Dell laptop manual)

PS : I should also note that :
Removing the battery from the laptop when running on fixed power protects the battery from heat.
is NOT recommended in my Dell manual.
The Dell manual actually says :
For optimal computer performance and to help preserve BIOS settings, operate your Dell™ portable
computer with the battery installed at all times
.
Now, that could be seen as a clever way for Dell to sell more batteries... But I'd doubt it.

And also keep in mind that if the power b0rks while in standby, it's almost as bad as if you hard reboot while the machine is on, only difference is that in standby, at least your filesystem buffers have been flushed.

I made a  related mistake once (and Once is enough) : After a short night, I forgot that my laptop was on standby mode, and I removed my memory stricks (just got some new ones). OMG. Nothing dramatic happened. Could've been worst.  ;D
I don't recommend that to anybody with a weak hearth though.

One thing I discovered recently : while in standby, I have maybe 30s left if I cut the power and remove my battery to put an other one. (speaking of the battery here... not the memory sticks...  :-[)

And also keep in mind that sometimes windows has trouble resuming from standby, although that's really hardware/driver related. So be careful!

I wouldn't recommend standby during the night, use hibernate and unplug your system, you get lower power consumption, and guard against power surges as well. But do use standby when you're leaving your system for more than a few minutes!

I guess laptops are a different story, of course.

When not used, my laptop is almost always in standby mode, unless I have to reboot or I'm gone for a long time. My new fast harddrive makes the difference between standby and hibernation less drastic though, and so I tend to use hibernation a bit more. Ecologically sound, I guess...

this is a very strange company.....

... And Do-Oganizer is a strange software... Impressive, oddly compelling (as Darwin would say)... but strange. It wants to do way so (to) many things (IMHO). They should stop adding these "not that useful" features (ie : the file explorer ???? ), and concentrate on perfecting the more important dimensions (the calendar, the  task manager, etc.), clearing all the bugs, adding palm + pocket PC syncing capabilities, etc.

They "should", ahem, probably also take care of their customers, of course.  ;)

Thanks f0dder. But you do realize of course that most "firewall" do have dll injection monitoring, etc.
It's all good to be a security expert and not be "lazy" but not everyone can be like that (I can't, and I don't consider my self a complete novice among the non programmers) and give their computer that kind of complete attention and dedication (like you suggested).

IMO if "you end up getting infected in the first place" there are still chances that the evil is not going to be sophisticated enough "to breach whatever software firewall I'm running". e.g. : something might be able to bypass my antivirus protection (through email), but then not be able to send info out, or spread to other computers. Anyhow, I realize that this is all abstract and highly speculative, so I'll shut up.  :-[

Makes you wonder "who" is actually putting all those "annoyance" virii on the web?  I'm not a "conspiracy theorist" by any means, but neither do I pretend that the Emperor's New Clothes are anything but his B-Day suit. ;)   There is LOTS of money in this business too. Something to think about.

Maybe, but even if that was the case, even if that was some kind of "conspiracy" etc. (I understand the nuances, don't worry...  ;)), one still has to adapt to these rules and constraints, even if they were artificially created. There are different ways to do that, one being to play it their way, or at least partly -- Comodo is not that expensive BTW...

Yes, some kind of malware can do that. Recently, they discovered a specimen that can break out of a sandboxed environment like VMware and cause havoc in the host machine.
Wouldn't be so effective if the VM was installed inside a Linux system.  :)

True. most probably. Even with Vista's UAC?

true enough, but doing something might help, whereas doing nothing....

target

That is basically outpost's (and others, of course) developers argument in favor of outbound filtering-protection -- like I said earlier, I find the outbound protection partisan arguments more convincing, but I'm still opened to other explanations as to why inbound would be better-enough.

f0dder ?

Ok, I see... Thanks for taking the time to explain urlworlf.
Have a productive day! (or what what remains of it...  :) )
1561
Thanks lanux.
Nope... it's broken. I also tried a repair (Help menu). Didn't work. I might try a more drastic approach and try a deeper repair going through the add/remove programs. But I'll have to do a backup before. I would dislike loosing all my settings...  :)

interruptron is nice urlwolf. The only problem is the CPU usage. I wonder why it's always between 20-30%. Any idea?

I stopped using timekeeper and created my own, the interruptron.
Does the same thing and it's a lot simpler and lest obstructive.
You can get it (free) from the second url in my sig.

oooohh. I didn't know that urlwolf. Thanks for the info. I'm going to try it too! :)
1565
Hey, thanks again lanux!  :)

I just saw your posts.

A bit earlier, I tried opening the normal.dot using "open and repair". I also tried saving the document in HTML, and then saving it back in DOC format. (funny thing --> the screen tips worked when the document was in HTML, but stopped working when saved back to the DOC format). So... nothing really totally worked. (Well... now at least the newly created documents will show the screen tips. But not the "old" documents.)

I'll try some of your links tomorrow.
1566
Thanks lanux! I tried that before. Actually,  if I let Word recreate a new normal.dot, the tooltips will reappear, but only for the newly created documents (using the new normal.dot). I guess I could reassign this new normal.dot to the old documents, but... that would create a real formating mess. Between these 2 evils, I'll choose to have no screen tips!

There might be another solution though, but it seems that my templates are somewhat corrupted. I'll try to see if I can purify my old templates... I'll try the VBA Code Cleaner and other stuff...

Living Room / MS Word's "screen tips" hell -- I want them back for my comments!!!
« Last post by Armando on January 24, 2008, 06:22 PM »
I lost my "screen tips" in Word 2003.

They're really useful because of all the comments I insert in my documents : these comments are normally instantly available via "screen tips" (or tooltips) when i hover my mouse on top of the highlighted portion of the text.

1- I've enabled (+ disabled and reenabled...) "screen tips" in Tools --> Customize --> Options.
2- I tried reverting to the original normal.dot template... (just in case).
3- I tried exiting word, reboot...

They do work VERY briefly for manually inserted screen tips  (via the "insert bookmark" option), But still don't work for comments.

 :wallbash:

Any ideas???

Hi Createdfromtheheart, welcome to DC !  :)

You could PM Ampa or urlwolf since they possess the software and might be still using it.

Otherwise, you could try TitleLog, an AHK script by brett (DC member). It works pretty well (that's what I use) and it's... free. The latest version (v1.05.83) can be found at the end of the thread. if you don't have AHK installed, download the .exe,

GUIs are so customizable that IMHO it's not a real problem. But true, they (the developpers) should be a bit more attentive to details... I personally find that Ubuntu has a nice default GUI (Gnome), and so does Mandriva and a couple other distributions.

"ROFLMAO" ??... anyway. I still have a few questions :

- So... What are you saying exactly about a firewall's outbound protection ?
- How does UAC + IL (Integrity Levels ) mechanism directly protects your data (I'm not talking about protection of of "higher integrity objects" here...)  ?
- How is inbound protection only better than outbound + inbound ?

Pierre, this is fantastic. It's also very stimulating to see a programmer working so fast, adapting his work to users needs etc.
BTW, how's the MS Word integration process going ? And did you find some of my other suggestions valuable? (I'm talking about the various suggestions I made earlier in my crazy long posts : "dock" the image viewer like other panes, be able to set and save different views for the same Grid, adding the “Customize (hotkeys)” option to the “tools” menu, “refreshing rate” of the UI, etc.)
