Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Vopt 9 defragger free

Too bad he didn't go all the way and made it open-source, not just gratis :) ...

Yes, that's exactly what I thought at the time I read the post on his website.
He probably had his reasons, but I did wonder what they might have been.

As for defragging, I tend to prefer to have it scheduled to run at a certain threshold percentage level of fragmentation. (Fire and forget.)

My bad, I saw this the other day on a different website and considered it was a nice afterthought from the creator. Just thought that I should mention it here. Guess I should have visited the vopt site first before posting.  :-[
______________________________
Yes, shame on you @Shades.

I tried Vopt out a couple of weeks back when I saw the announcement. It seems to do a reasonable enough job, but quite honestly I have no idea how one can accurately and objectively measure the difference between one defragger and the next. I have therefore been using the inbuilt defragger in Win10. (Why not?)
I like the screen in Vopt and others where you can see all the little squares changing in colour as the defragging proceeds. I find it quite restful - almost hypnotic. Ahhhhh, yes, patterns...    :-*

Hmm, that's interesting.
Using the steps I gave above, I thought I had managed to get this to happen consistently with clips selected in the Recycled bin and with clips selected in the Ungrouped subfolder of the Recycled bin.
That was on:
  • a Toshiba laptop with Win10-64 PRO
  • an HP Pavilion laptop with Win10-64
I am now using the latter laptop, but with Win10-64 "Anniversary" installed. On that laptop, now I seem to be able to only get it to happen consistently in the Ungrouped subfolder of the Recycled bin.
The steps are as above. Same error, etc. No "trick" to it, as far as I am aware.
If I press "OK" on the error box, the box goes away and the clips get deleted, with no crash of CHS. Maybe I am seeing the box because it is getting "stuck"?
Maybe the box is transient for you - only momentarily appearing and then disappearing - so you don't get to perceive it? Could that be possible? Either that or the error is simply not occurring for you. If you output a log every time that error box is requested/displayed, that might help.

It's non-fatal, so probably not worth investing a whole heap of time on it.

He hasn't been active since May, so considering that this topic was posted in 2015 and the OP is no longer frequenting the board, I'd consider this a useless necro.

@TaoPhoenix: Could you please edit/modify the title in the OP to read "web browser tabs*, instead of "PDF tabs". That will at least correct the heading for all posts/comments made after the point when you modify it.

Question: exactly which links do you want in the text file?:
  • (a) the links embedded in the pages displayed in each tab?
  • (b) the URLs in the address bar for each tab?

^^ Thanks. Working through it slowly now...

^^ Yes, and don't forget zoom levels:
  • Ctrl and + (Zoom in).
  • Ctrl and -  (Zoom out).
  • Press repeatedly to zoom in/out more.
  • Ctrl+0 restores zoom level to 100%.

(The latter is not to be confused with Ctrl+"n" where n=1-8 - which are tab numbers in order, Left-to-Right - and wher 9 is the rightmost tab.)

Thought I should report this. Been meaning to for a while.

@dcwul62: Well, I am a bit of a minimalist, so I would usually tend to consider cosmetic changes as unnecessary. So I personally probably wouldn't ask a developer to carry out cosmetic changes. However, you never know. See what @mouser thinks about it. He might think it's a great idea!    :)

Do you have the same CHS version as mine, or is it an earlier version? If the latter, then get the latest (still the same as mine) and see if it fixes any colour selection problems that you might be experiencing.

I don't see why adding a couple more standard layouts would necessarily need to be hard-coded. It's not as though you'd be fixing a problem to do that. Not even a "nice-to-have" tweak either. Therefore, it would seem like a waste of time to hard-code it.

On the colours thing, I have no difficulty selecting and making the colours stick, and with no messing about .
My version of CHS is 2016-05-13 v2.36.0 Beta.
OS is Win10-64 PRO.

TapTap / Re: CTRL-C shortcut not recognized in Win7-Explorer
« Last post by IainB on August 04, 2016, 04:16 AM »
@damax: If your main need for Tap-Tap is that you are a "lefty" - i.e., using the mouse with your left hand - when you need to press Ctrl-C or Ctrl+V, then a simple solution might be to use AHK (Autohotkey) and type (say) RightCtrl+M and RightCtrl+N as a substitute for (Left)Ctrl+C and (Left)Ctrl+V respectively - i.e., AHK would intercept the substitute keys pressed and pass the respective correct keys to the system.

It might be worth a try - suck-it-and-see. I haven't tried it myself to see if it would work, because I have my RightCtrl key mapped as a Delete key (to save me having to traverse and hunt for the actual Delete key near the top RHS edge of the keyboard on my laptop).
You could also consider putting OkayKeybees to good use. I only came across it the other day, but I thought it looked rather nifty.
URL = http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/119/
OkayKeybees is a freeware keyboard remapper with a twist. You define what keys are always replaced or what keys are replaced only when a user defined modifier key is held. You can effectively "move" keys to either side of the keyboard or even effective disable keys (like the Windows key).
No installation program is needed.

@wraith808: I reckon you're flogging a dead horse.
I mean, for how long has Citadel5 been selling the GS-Base product? How dumb could they be?
What you are saying can't be news to them. If any salient information about pricing/licencing etc. of the sort you are suggesting has been omitted/obfuscated or whatever on the website or wherever in their documentation, then it would seem to be highly unlikely that, by this late stage, it will have been done or left there by accident. That probably goes double for the CAPTCHA.

It's too clever by half.
I usually find that the least frustrating thing to do when faced with such annoyances is simply to forget it, vote with one's feet/wallet, and focus on something more useful where one doesn't have to expend one's energies in trying to effect some change(s) to the immovable - which is kinda what I was suggesting above regarding the true price of such things.
As I said above: This arguably has a lot to do with ethics in business. (It's also about trust.)

@Iainb
The only point/suggestion I wanted to make is to just have some default skin/style/colorset (or whatever) that adds somewhat more color to CHS.
see: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=26575.0
Yes, I know, one can go thru settings and stuff and add colors, etc., but that was not what I had in mind.
@f0dder: save.me was just an example. it has very limited possibilities to adjust colors. I think only - AFAIK only untag Area Effect.
but that's it.

Oh, I see. In addition to the colours used in the standard and example layouts already provided  - per Menu | Layouts - maybe @mouser could add/provide some more layouts with assorted colours/fonts/font sizes in them? Is that what you are suggesting?
As a long-time user of CHS I had become used to setting up my own layouts with assorted colours/fonts/font sizes in them. I do think that it's a bit tricky sometimes to get the right colours/fonts/font sizes, and I recall I had to do some of that by trial-and-error.

Eh? Is there a "lack of colour" in CHS?
One of the things that I rather like about CHS is the extent to which you can customise the UI (User Interface) - areas that can be made more conducive to easier perception and improved ergonomics, including, for example,  the "skin" panel colours and font(s) and font sizes, and the layout options.

Two examples:
Here's a "standard" layout that I use, with colours and fonts that suit my peculiar needs:

       02_1364x768_A0BD7154.png

Here's a 3-pane vertical layout that I use with the same colours and fonts:

finding out that this is basically a subscription by another name
Can you clarify that? The purchase page says that the version you buy is good forever.  You don't get free updates after a year, but you don't need to pay again to keep the version you bought working (as I understand it).
___________________________
This arguably has a lot to do with ethics in business.
I consider that @wraith808 has probably hit the nail pretty squarely on the head, and then later provides further substantiation of his comment.
It could arguably be called "a subscription by subterfuge" based on a position of pseudo-"lock-in". It's also a variation of a sort of bait-and-switch I suppose. Clever though, but then that don't impress me much. That sort of thing is known as "sharp practice" where I come from. In the long term, it could potentially and probably turn out to be  a self-destructive commercial/marketing tactic. Co-incidentally, I notice that Malwarebytes have been subtly shifting their licensing terms in what ominously looks like a turn in a similar direction.

Having studied and applied marketing and commercial/contract law in business, my understanding is that one shouldn't need to have to hunt around for the embedded hooks/gotchas, if one can reasonably trust the person one is dealing with to be dealing in a straight-up-and-down manner.
It always disappoints me when people let me (and themselves) down in that regard of trust.

In some of my job roles I've been responsible for the selection and financial sign-off of software licencing purchases for quite large farms of client-server and thin client systems. One of the primary risks in those cases is projected future cost, and if it turns out that a good product is available at what looks like a good price, but that in the longer-term it's pricing structure would force you down a potentially more expensive route, then you go for another product that doesn't stitch you up that way. I have to say that, in my experience, Microsoft has always been pretty straight-up-and-down and fair in its licencing schemes. Buyers of MS software can project future costs/budgets, and on functionality and price (risk) they would tend to usually win against their potential competitors.

So, sadlement, I'll not be buying an upgrade to GS-Base, and I'll not be committing myself to using GS-Base, even though I think it's quite a good product, and I'll certainly not be wanting to do repeat business with Citadel5 - or other people/organisations - if they demonstrate sharp practice. I risked very little, buying a licence for what, for me was a trial, at 50% off, but though the product was good, when I realised the subterfuge, I just uninstalled it and determined to continue to use the well-integrated MS Office 2016 product suite (Access, Excel, Word, OneNote, etc.), via the excellent $10 corporate home use licencing scheme, and it's a superb product set that is regularly updated, with only infrequent primary version number changes. Why would I use a single short-lived database product for the same cost, with a limited 1-year upgrade life? It wouldn't make commercial sense. So, regrettably, my trial of GS-Base is short-lived and it becomes one of my dusty "also-rans", with a note to self to not waste any more time on it in future.

We will nevertheless probably see GS-Base continue to come up under BitsDuJour and elsewhere at the artificial "50% off" (or whatever) price, appealing to uninformed and price-sensitive demand where, after 12 months, the suckers/buyers will find themselves caught up in an upgrade costing them - guess what? - an artificially-motivating "50% off" price again. Everything is 50% off all the time! Isn't that great? If the offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
Economic and accounting theory would indicate that, under such a pricing scheme, the real price is always going to be 50% (or whatever) off whatever number happens to have been arbitrarily set as the supposedly undiscounted price.

This could even seem like a simple scam. Call a spade a "spade", as they say. @wraith808 would seem to be correct and it's arguably "Subscription" by another name.

I just now applied for registration on the discussion forum at Citadel5.
With my eyesight I generally need a pair of specs to read books and a different pair of specs (with a different depth of field) to read laptop screens.
However, when submitting the registration request, I found the Citadel5 discussion forum's security code image sooo hard to distinguish that I began to think that I must have a major eyesight problem if most people could read it OK.    :o
These security images are intended to filter out spam bots, the theory being that only bona fide real people can read them, but I began to wonder whether in fact the filter was designed to ensure that only aliens with weird eyesight that saw things in a different wavelength to humans got through.

So not knowing their criteria, it makes it difficult to see if you need to visit the sites in question.  That's my concern.  Why use an aggregation site if it doesn't aggregate?

Yes, eggsaggerly.
Thankyou for making that point.
From: http://www.opencultu...ptical-thinking.html
PDF: http://www.inf.fu-be...ng/Sagan-Baloney.pdf - "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection".

In one chapter of his book, “The Fine Art of Baloney Detection,” Sagan laid out his method, proposing what he called “A Baloney Detection Kit,” a set of intellectual tools that scientists use to separate wishful thinking from genuine probability. Sagan presents the contents of his kit as “tools for skeptical thinking,” which he defines as “the means to construct, and to understand, a reasoned argument and—especially important—to recognize a fallacious or fraudulent argument.” You can see his list of all eight tools, slightly abridged, below. These are all in Sagan’s words:

Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the “facts.”
Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.
Arguments from authority carry little weight — “authorities” have made mistakes in the past. They will do so again in the future. Perhaps a better way to say it is that in science there are no authorities; at most, there are experts.
Spin more than one hypothesis. If there’s something to be explained, think of all the different ways in which it could be explained. Then think of tests by which you might systematically disprove each of the alternatives.
Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it’s yours. It’s only a way station in the pursuit of knowledge. Ask yourself why you like the idea. Compare it fairly with the alternatives. See if you can find reasons for rejecting it. If you don’t, others will.
If whatever it is you’re explaining has some measure, some numerical quantity attached to it, you’ll be much better able to discriminate among competing hypotheses. What is vague and qualitative is open to many explanations.
If there’s a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) — not just most of them.
Occam’s Razor. This convenient rule-of-thumb urges us when faced with two hypotheses that explain the data equally well to choose the simpler. Always ask whether the hypothesis can be, at least in principle, falsified…. You must be able to check assertions out. Inveterate skeptics must be given the chance to follow your reasoning, to duplicate your experiments and see if they get the same result.

Or, as per the motto of the Royal Society, London (which words they apparently no longer observe):
"Nullius in verba/verbo." Literally, "Take nobody's word for it; see for yourself"

@4wd: Trouble is, I kept no record of what I might have turned OFF!    :-[
The problem of this latest cumulative update simply not working seems to be very common. Huge long discussion threads, and not a fix in sight, and with MS "engineers" noticeably absent and only able to offer feeble/dud suggestions when they do materialise.
They evidently don't know what the general cause(s) is(are), otherwise they would issue a generic fix.
