Living Room / Gamers deemed too fast for real-life race
« Last post by app103 on February 17, 2013, 11:58 AM »
In 2008 Nissan and Sony PlayStation teamed up with an interesting concept – could expert gamers on the Gran Turismo computer game transform their skills to real life racing?

After 25,000 applications in 13 countries they invited the best gamers to a ‘GT Academy’ for intensive training and the results proved to be better than anyone expected.

The programme has already produced drivers such as Spain’s Lucas Ordonez and France’s Jordan Tresson who have both gone on to compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Last year’s GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough teamed up with a pro driver Alex Buncomb and entered the British GT pro-am series - an event where a pro is teamed up with a 'gentleman driver' who is expected to be slower than his partner.

However, despite having no professional driving experience, Mardenborough proved to be as fast as the pros and was so good that the series has now banned further GT Academy drivers from taking part.

Dr Assad's special eye test:
 (see attachment in previous post)

So how does this work? Are you handed a gun and have to shoot in the direction the one on the chart points?

These would probably crackle a whole lot less than homemade from Reynold's Wrap.  ;)

If your brain is located in your ass, you can't protect it with a traditional tin foil hat.  If you try to protect it with tin foil underwear, would that fall under "personal amusement"?

When you have an economy that forces the majority of households to have 2 incomes instead of 1, could that just possibly maybe perhaps be a mitigating factor in the birth rate?

As opposed to an economy that requires more than 2 incomes per household, and therefore requires having multiple children, so you can send them to work in the sweatshops?

I didn't even know that Old Boy was released outside Korea.

It's perhaps one of the more disturbed movies out there. Deeply disturbed...

+1! :tellme:

That bit of movie strangeness left my brain agitated for a day or two after I saw it. Very disturbing movie. It outdid the cult classic Videodrome for leaving you in a weird state of mind afterwards.

That's precisely why I liked it. I like movies that make my brain feel like it was caught in a bug zapper. When trying to recall some that maybe not everyone has seen before, Old Boy was the first to come to mind.

Way back in the day, AOL 5.0 would give you an error message if you tried to join an empty chat room. My daughter captured this one:

Ok, so you want a reset that doesn't clear your configuration? You could just exit and run it again when you are ready, if Pause isn't what you need.

Yes, the Apply button will be gong away. Next version will auto-apply when you click Work.

Living Room / Re: Clicking Purely to Benefit a Site
« Last post by app103 on February 11, 2013, 04:32 PM »
Next question:

Have you ever clicked an ad you were not interested in because you hated the advertiser and wanted to unfairly drain the money out of his pocket through click fraud?

Remember that when someone is getting paid, it means someone is paying, and when you arrange for them to pay without getting what they are paying for, that's a form of theft. I am pretty sure you wouldn't like it done to you if you were paying for ads.

It also leads to advertisers not wanting to pay as much per click, which means instead of putting more money in that site's pocket, ultimately, you are helping to remove it (and remove it from my pocket, as well). It is quite frustrating as a webmaster, to watch the total number of clicks double over time, while watching the total earnings fall to less than 50% of what they once were.  :(

Or if you have a copy of an older version of Windows in which the old apps do work, install it in a VM and run the apps in that.  ;)

Don't do crafts in your bare feet, either. I had a gun malfunction once and the trigger got stuck, with a lot of hot glue all over the place, dripping onto my foot.

I did that same dance.  ;D

Then there is that other dance, the one that goes with crazy glue + nylon.

I am still thinking about rewriting Instant Boss to be cross-platform. I am also considering some changes and improvements.

The original purpose of the app was to get people to work more, which is why it didn't remind you to stop when you clicked "work longer".

I think the fact that many use it for reasons other than tricking themselves into getting more work done, kind of makes sense for some of the adjustments to features that I am considering. And yes, the "work longer" reminding you to take a break is one of the changes I am seriously considering.

Did you know they sell caulk sealer in glue stick form? The stuff is wonderful (when you can find it), because you don't have to wait hours and hours for it to dry so you can take a shower. It sets in about a minute or so.

Of course, you'd want a dedicated glue gun of the right type for this purpose, as it's not a good idea to mix adhesives or sealants within the same device. So, if you get yourself a 2nd one for a specific type of adhesive, make sure you label both guns with the adhesive type you used in them.

I actually own a bunch of glue guns, some of them are even dedicated to the use of this stuff (one for each color, that I picked up for about $3 each, back in the last century).  ;D

Living Room / Re: Payphones - Thoughts?
« Last post by app103 on February 08, 2013, 11:14 AM »
But the payphones I was talking about were the utility variety owned by the local telco. The private ones are a different story. You do still see them in places where the disadvantaged or inconvenienced tend to gather. But I see those more like modern versions of the  regular old black dial phone that used to be in Mrs. Barski's little store over by the cash register. You could always use it to make a phone call - provided you had ten cents and didn't mind Mrs. Barski surreptitiously listening to everything you said.
 ;D

Verizon is my local telco, and there are still quite a few of their pay phones around, including one right around the corner from my house, in front of the mini-mall.

And the last place my hubby worked, the pay phone located inside the business was also from Verizon...that was the one that doubled as the business's phone. It was on the wall, right between the customer and employee areas, next to the bathrooms.

The only time you see private or 3rd party pay phones around here are in bad neighborhoods where Verizon took out their pay phones, due to them getting robbed all the time.

The day they remove the one around the corner and it gets replaced with some 3rd party crap, that's my cue to find a new place to live, fast.

Which is the reason why people getting their internet service cut off for "downloading copyrighted materials" is ridiculous. You can't visit most websites without doing that. Unless the entire site is made with public domain stuff, it's all copyrighted.

There also seems to be payphones by laundrymats.  Guess they figure if you can't afford your own washer/dryer, you can't afford a phone.....

Not everyone owns a car or a phone. You often find pay phones near things where one might have to transport a bunch of stuff they can't carry. The taxi business thrives on it.

Pay phones are still kind of necessary.

There are businesses that still have pay phones in order to keep their employees from abusing their business line. In other words, the pay phone's number is the business's official number, and no charge for incoming calls, but employees can't use it for making outgoing calls without paying.

Also, if you want to easily find a pay phone, try in front of a supermarket, where many lower income people and elderly without cell phones or cars, use them to call a taxi to haul their groceries home.

Your FFmpeg screenshot mentions the file being created with GoldWave, which is not the sndrec.exe which shipped with Win95 that Tinman says he created the file in. I am guessing it was an older version of this app that he used.

Could you try the most recent version?

Still works.

If that still works, could you try using a hex editor (HxD is pretty nice if you don't have on lying around) to overwrite the "WAVE" header string with something else, and see if it still works?

Now it doesn't.

Also, is this a freshly re-downloaded version of Define.wav, or have you had it open in any other application after changing extension to .mp3?

Started with a fresh copy for this little experiment.
