MerleOne, if you (or someone else) find the answer, please let us know. Sorry, I haven't tested System Mechanic in recent years.  Realignate? :o

Quite frankly, the more I "study" defraggers the more confused I get. :-[

I mean, it's quite difficult to comprehend how iolo's Program Accelerator + Drive Accelerator differs from PIOZR (Puran Intelligent Optimizer) or QSICA (Quicksys Intelligent Clusters Allocation). And if there are real differences, are they statistically significant in terms of performance?

Good grief, I can see why some users just stick with the native OS defrag utility and call it a day.

Sweet news--UltraSearch now has the option to search folder names.

Oh boy, I'm definitely using this search app now. :-*

..A great freeware IMO...

I agree--a very nice image viewer. Yeah, my earlier comments are probably outdated at this point. I need to update and check it out the current thumbnail generation speed.

Curt, your post reminded me I already have TreeSize Free which can show empty folders (and a heckuva lot more). Its scan speed is very impressive-- seems I don't really need Empty Folder Nuker.

btw I also tried the new version of Fast Empty Folder Finder. If there's more than one empty folder, it works fine. But with only one empty folder, it doesn't seem to find anything.

New version 2.0 of Fast Empty Folder Finder has been released.
http://listeningpc.c...-empty-folder-finder

I've been using an older utility on XP called Empty Folder Nuker (mentioned by hpearce ) due to the convenient shell integration.

General Software Discussion / Re: Merge-Diff program for image-graphic files?
« Last post by sajman99 on October 05, 2010, 06:46 PM »
I've been trying to find free alternatives to Beyond Compare's image comparison mode, and I have to acknowledge it's a difficult task.

Compared to the power and seamless operation of Beyond Compare, most free tools are too basic and unwieldy IMO. I only found two free apps which approximate Beyond Compare's "Picture Compare" mode. Unfortunately, neither tool supports drag and drop.

ImageDiff: ionForge visual compare tool from 2005 can still be found. http://download.cnet...2192_4-10401778.html

ImageComparator: this tiny portable image comparison tool has potential, but the current lack of scroll bar function is a major weakness. http://www.flounder..../imagecomparator.htm

(ImageCompare http://www.lucatec.n...pare-en.php#download initially looked good, but it is buggy (as mentioned on the site) with the overlay mode causing access violations.)

Bottom Line: I would really like a DC discount on Beyond Compare. :-*

Jibz : so what did you choose exactly ? :)

Good question. Since there are a multitude of sync tools available, I'm also curious about Jibz's choice(s). :)

...these dudes with 8 core processors are talking about DVDRB processing a 2 hour DVD in 18 minutes using it. I assume they mean using 2 pass best profile. :)

Checking my DVDRB log file reveals my average processing time (ie. prepare/encode/rebuild) is around 60 minutes on a 3 year old dual core comp. Not bad considering HC's quality output; I'll gladly take that tradeoff.

But 18 minutes to process a 2 hour movie--that's crazy fast!! 8)

The freeware SideSlide could be worth a look...
SideSlide is an advanced, portable, unobtrusive, dockable, skinnable, instantly accessible, highly configurable Desktop Extension on Steroids! Clean desktop clutter and make your computer friendlier and faster than ever before. With unique use of containers and various innovative features, SideSlide lets you get instant access to everything you have and much more. The program respects your system and keeps all of its configuration files in a single folder.

I vaguely remember trying this software quite a while back and didn't care for it, but it looks like the development has been active. Lots of new features since I last checked.

HCenc 0.25 has been released. Evidently 0.24 would sometimes hang at the end of the encode. Guess I was lucky--never had the issue. I encoded several movies last week with 0.24 and all completed successfully with the typical great quality.

Hi sajman99,
MultiFind (free version) is not dropped and is updated from time to time, but some features are only present in MultiFind Pro. You can find link to MultiFind on midlinesoft.com, just go to home (root) page.

Erm...thanks for that clarification. How embarrassing :-[--that's what happens when I rush around posting between football games.  ;D

Thanks for maintaing a free version.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?

Searching around lately I've seen nothing but good comments about Oops!Backup. If I were bright enough to be an author or programmer ;), I wouldn't hesitate to buy.

But alternatives do exist--some free. Particularly if you simply cannot afford to buy, backup/versioning freebies like these could be worth a look:

It's one of the most frequently updated programs...

Yep, I've noticed many of Softwareok's other little apps such as DesktopOK and OneLoupe are also updated quite frequently.

Neat collection of tiny portable (most of 'em anyway) apps.

...portable version of MultiFind Pro has just been released.

Hi Cashper. IMO MultiFind Pro is a good file search software fairly priced at $24.95 (1-user license). I recently recommended it to a friend who needed to search through many documents.

btw I no longer see any reference to a free version of MultiFind. Have you dropped that feature limited version or does MultiFind Pro revert to the limited MultiFind after the 30 day evaluation period?

Thanks for the portable build. :)

Hey, that does look cool with KMPlayer's distinctive icons. I didn't even know about that aspect. I've still got my music icons set to an older version of Jet Audio.

I've got VLC Media Player too, and I agree about its icon--never liked it at all (ug-leeee! ;D).

MemoryWatch is a small open source app which will do exactly what you want. It provides memory usage and disk space usage, allowing you to set a warning level %.

Runs very light, neat little app--I'm keeping it even though I don't really "need" it.

Spotted today at Addictive Tips btw.

Anybody know this program named BK? It looks like a useful little backup tool comparable to Karen's Replicator. Not sure I need another backup/sync utility at this point, but those who want compression might check it out.

http://fdsoftware.al...ta.org/products.html:
BK is a freeware, fast and simple backup utility. Some features are:
 - Backup scheduling and automation.
 - Verification mode.
 - Volume Shadow Copy service support (if enabled and running on your operative system).
 - Software compression

Hi,

I can't recall if this small file types manager has been mentioned (and I'm too sleep deprived to read this entire thread).
