Tip 11:

- Do not expect most things to work by drag-and-drop. They won't.

Linux is still far away from the UI consistency of the commercial OS'ses.  But you have the choice among twenty different "variations on a theme".

I really like WinPatrol; makes it easier to understand what is going on on a PC with all these enigmatic background processes.

Thanks for the info !!!
I will check these sites out.  You are correct, there is of course a lot coming up in a google search - however most of it looks rather fishy on a first glance.

Living Room / TV via broadband ?
« Last post by Lutz_ on January 19, 2009, 12:30 PM »
Hello,

I would be interested in tips and comments regarding "watching TV" via broadband internet.
Is dedicated software recommended? Are there any bearable offerings available at all ? Favorite web sites?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Somehow, the frequently mentioned "clients" seem to be a different type of people, than the ones working in our office/lab. I have not found anybody appreciating the Office 2007 interface; actually several people are using the classic interface addon, which is available here:
http://www.addintool.../english/menuoffice/

I am complaining about the ribbon, because it means more clicks to get things done. I do not see how its current implementation enhances the intuitiveness of the operation.  Instead of obscure menu items I am now looking for obscure ribbon items; the latter ones have a more complicated structure to them.

Crazy rebate deals are "normal" at Fry's.  The products are usually perfectly up to date. Just some good old fashioned price dumping to get the customers into the store (the deals are more frequent in their brick and mortar outlets).  AFAIK, the majority of the customers then never fill out the rebate paperwork and they still make some money.

Living Room / Re: PC Magazine to go all digital, no more print editions
« Last post by Lutz_ on December 27, 2008, 11:30 PM »
I did read PC Magazine for two years a while ago, until I got too bothered by the nonsense that some of their writers were producing (and I am not even half-informed myself).
Finally they did promote the dumbest of their staff to become chief editor and they even began writing about cars.  I guess, until the editorial policies change dramatically, they will keep shrinking.
The best thing about PC Mag are actually their PC utilities, many original ideas there.

The Macro lens will depend very much on the motifs. For live bugs, for example, you will need a greater distance to the objects - meaning longer focal length.
The most standard 90 or 100 mm macros lenses from the mainstream manufacturers (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, I am not informed about the Canon offerings) are all supposed to be very good (apparently lens design for these is easy).
I bet you can find some dedicated macro photography websites with detailed info.

Hello, this looks very interesting!  I have to admit however that I do not understand how to use a WDX plugin at all.    :-[
Would I need TotalCommander to run your Comparer?  Just wanted to note, that it might be helpful to add an introduction or an explanation link for non-geeks once the development settles down a bit.

I believe the Sigma is sharper in the center and has a pretty good macro range and a very solid build; the Tamron might not be as super-sharp in the center but very good over the entire field of view; it is also usually cheaper (more plastics; I have only used the Tamron, which is my always-on lens).
Have fun with your current equipment first !!!
Which is better quality? Tamron or sigma?

Josh,
Sorry, but you are not done yet!!!!
You have to get at least the Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens for indoor pictures (or the Sigma 18-50, 2.8 ). I seriously doubt that you would enjoy the camera without it.
  :D    :D
Welcome to DSLRs, btw.

The closest equivalent of the Canon 40D should be the Sony A700 (and not the far cheaper A200). I am confident that the A200 should be fine for the course, but the A700 is in another class (fast focussing and a bigger brighter viewfinder, far smoother shutter mechanism, features.... and certainly heavier). I would not want to be without the in-body image stabilization of the Sony (too much coffee in my system).; the image stabilization of the Pentax K10 did not work as well for me, but I have heard good things about the Olympus anti-shake  (I loved the handling and ergonomics of the Pentax, though).
Cameras from all DSLR suppliers should fit the requirements of the course; your wife should definitely try them out. In my experience women tend to be much more choosy regarding the ergonomics of the camera.
Feisol makes very well regarded tripods sold per mail-order from Taiwan. You could get a light carbon fiber tripod there for the same price as a regular tripod from the big name brands.

Thanks for the offer !!!!
... and perhaps a how-to; because I never got it working myself.  :(

I tried andLinux (http://www.andlinux.org/) and I kinda like how easy it was to setup... I might write a full review if anyone's interested.

General Software Discussion / Re: Basic Question on Photo Tagging
« Last post by Lutz_ on December 13, 2008, 11:07 PM »
Make sure that the software writes the tags not only to its own database, but also into the meta data of the image files to guarantee the transportability of the data. The IPTC standard is still the most universal one.
Other programs doing this are IdImager, Studioline Photo, Helicon Photo Safe, Acdsee (I guess only the professional version), ....

Darwin, do you know if the PDF converter Pro has any advantages over Omnipage? - I had the impression that the Converter functionality might be a subset of the  tools of the omnipage package. I would certainly give it a try if there are some extras.

The 10 alpha works great for me; fast indeed.
The criticism about the lack of features does not seem warranted - please see the bottom of the page:
Opera:Next
The already added features are nothing to sneeze at either, or?

Hello Darwin,
no, Nitro PDF does not do any OCR at all. It just embeds bitmaps and the created PDFs are consequently not fully searchable. I guess you have tried omnipage OCR?

Hope the avatar shows off my brain capacity.

PDF editing is obviously very iffy - since PDF is a dedicated output format.
That said in my experience Adobe Acrobat is the worst product I have tried (horrible interface). I can only imagine it is need for some high, high, high end options that perhaps others do not offer. For everyday tasks I believe other programs are far better; I have tried the Foxit editor and was impressed; I am using Nitro PDF Pro (got it very cheap at Fry's) and am very satisfied.

Photo POS is a very nice intermediate image editor.
But would you not think, that they really should think about re-naming "POS" to a less ambiguous term?

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera - An exercise on frustration

Most likely I am doing something wrong - Opera is still a very pleasant experience. For me, the latest updates have a fixed a few glitches and it seems to have recovered its original speed.     :P
