General Software Discussion / Re: Best password manager?
« Last post by Lashiec on December 17, 2007, 04:37 PM »
Another vote for KeePass. Until now I had been using the ultimate password manager, ya know, that little grey thing in the skull, but unfortunately being a multitask app which does everything but not everything right, it's been increasingly harder for me to keep up with them, I even forgot the other day my password for the Debian server in the college, how embarrassing. Fortunately, the teacher deleted the old account and I could get in again.

So time for going with a password manager. I didn't have to try all the other ones, as I have previous experiences with KeePass, and I really liked what I saw there. I tried RoboForm in the past as well, but (don't shoot me) I couldn't figure out how to use it, and the app seemed awkward to me (I hope the Shamurai is not reading this... :P). So KeePass does what I want, storing passwords in a strong protected database, and doing all the autofilling I need (user+password). It even works with Opera, so I couldn't be happier. Besides, it's free.

One thing I didn't see mentioned about KeePass is the incredible quality not only of the product, but also the entire ecosystem around it, I mean, things like the website and the plugins. Everything is well designed, attractive and informative, this is nothing that frequent in OSS. The icon theme BTW is lovable :-*, very KDE-like. This is just a perfect example of what good open source software can be.

Perhaps the unique problem is that it does not detect forms as it should sometimes, oh well, at least it's better than previous scheme :)

PD: And that it does not let you add various URLs and/or title(s) per entry, unfortunately some of the sites I go to have various login points in there, I suppose I could find a generic window name in all of them, it could not be that difficult.

Then I don't know about this other one:

Spoiler

<Nighted> or will it be bent in the middle....
<Ken`> it's straight, but covered with metal and screws

NSFW, kids not allowed, etc. ;D

I don't understand why some products are on that list, considering critical and market success, and lack of heavy bashing against them (unlike Vista ;D). Also, as always happens with these kind of lists, they're too U.S. centered, half of what's mentioned there does not bother the rest of the world.

And I am getting tons of japanese characters out of that file. Weird...

If I posted the never ending discussions with one of them about my stubbornness in not installing anything labeled "Messenger" by Microsoft... they won't care that much about privacy, anyway.

I'll look into talking with my Adium-user friend for using OTR, thanks for the tip.
1432
Yes, but what I was talking about is what housetier mentioned: if the other part doesn't use the plugin, you can't encrypt the information you're sending as well. Practically all my friends use WLM, except one who uses aMSN, and another who uses Adium (when he's on the Mac, anyway), and WLM is not exactly the privacy champion, more the opposite <_<

I use Miranda for everything, so no problem there :)

Hmmm, can we get Microsoft to use encryption in Windows Live Messenger? (That would be the only way to have encrypted communications with ALL my contacts in MSN).

IRC in the other hand... I could use OTR in Miranda for when we are chatting about taking over the world in the DC channel. When do we get encryption in the forum? ;D

john_doe123, did you try normal browsing with Firefox in safe mode? If you don't know how to get the mode, or deleted the link from the Start Menu, input in a Run box "firefox -safe-mode".

Also, and this is just a shot in the dark, it would be a good thing to deinstall both Adblock and the Filterset.G updater, and go with AdBlock Plus. AdBlock has some unresolved problems, and the Filterset.G has been know to cause some other ones, apart from being overzealous in what it's blocking.

A lot of time since I stopped using it, and a while since I tried it for the last time, as I moved to something else. Despite the improvements, I'm not moving back as I don't find nothing enticing in the new version.

Oh, you finally found it, looks they changed the location since previous versions :)

There's one that lets you configure the time window before the computer restarts itself due to the installation of an important update. If you wish, I can paste here the code from the X-Setup Pro plugin, as I can't find anything on the Internet about how to apply it, at least not something as useful as the code.
1444
Yes, somewhere ("File types" or "Display"), there's must be a option where you select if you wish to show Winamp in the taskbar or not. I'm not sure because it's been a while since I used Winamp for the last time :)

I'll tell you it happens here constantly, but I should clarify it only happens when GMail has finished loading the interface and the mails after the initial login process.

General Software Discussion / Re: Web developers spank M$
« Last post by Lashiec on December 14, 2007, 12:25 PM »
Funny enough, mass media is doing the same thing (venting about something, not spanking Microsoft ;D) with Opera for yesterday's call for the EU to investigate Microsoft for the same reason those developers are criticising them, oh, the irony...

Opera's movement has a valid point and a not so valid one, but it's not excuse to bash someone just because... err... don't know, there's no logical reason for Opera bashing, not this kind at least. Perhaps the mass media wants a closed Internet with only two players and no room for the other 30+ browsers around?

Well, enough hijacking. I hope that Microsoft listens to the criticism and get their act together, just for the sake of the entire web and for their millions of users who deserve some respect. IE7 was a step in the right direction, IE8 should be a jump.
1447
Yes, there is a option for that in the first sections of the "Preferences" screen, in the "File Types" screen IIRC.

Nastiest option, of course. Windows Update it's not exactly a big offender, as it downloads the updates whenever I instruct it to do so (that means I refrain myself for doing something during that time period), but other software... OK, my main problem is not software stealing focus, as I don't remember it happening too often (they flash instead, that's a much better idea), but particular implementations in some software or Internet services.

Why the f****** GMail tab has to steal the focus of what I'm reading at the moment? Why IE can't pop up a nifty dialog at the top of the window likes it does with most warnings when a page wants to install something?

Considering the rather excellent implementations other software (popup notifications like Firefox, Miranda or Opera), or the same Windows (tooltips in the systray, that's fantastic!), I can't figure out why some others insist in stealing focus prompting for your intervention and (possibly) starting a disaster in your computer.

If you really have to popup a window, make sure that you use ONLY the mouse to interact with it (no keyboard keys allowed), and set as default the less dangerous option of the dialog. Think in antivirus software nag screens when they encounter a virus in your computer, practices like these should be de facto in every security software, for the havoc or lack of it they could unleash on the machine.

Most tests I saw say that ReadyBoost only brings advantages (and not that much, mind you) with 1 GB of RAM or less. Considering the price of a 1 GB stick of DDR2 RAM these days, I encourage buying one and call it a day.

Using this method requires: a) A fast USB drive, with enough capacity, and b) A registered version of the program to do something. Considering the cost of both combined, I think you can find cheaper RAM easily.

On a completely different topic, Darwin, congratulations for your 3000 messages
