Not having much luck getting through to the site for HotSwap.

I am getting through without any delay.

HotSwap! has not been updated since June 2012, and USB-SR not since March 2013

Did you check the pictures in the exact same light, on the same time a year, and at the same time of the day, as at the first look? Are you certain that your eyes and the monitor screen is in the exact same angle now, as then? Have your sight changed? Were any of your indoor light bulbs changed? It really does matter! All of it.

I am of course disappointed that without any explanation, Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro was not tested. To me this is like saying twenty years ago, we have tested for the safest car in the world, without even mentioning Volvo.

General Software Discussion / Waterfox 26
« Last post by Curt on February 13, 2014, 09:10 AM »
Waterfox 26 was released 26 Dec 2013, and today I was finally being informed! But I cannot be bothered to try it now when 7 weeks have passed, and we know Mozilla wants to push a new version every 6 weeks. Oh, so many things are not how they should be, talking about Waterfox. As an example, the latest Waterfox on the program's  homepage on SourceForge is from 2011  :o Confused? Wait for the next episode of WaterSoap, eh... WaterFox  ,  if ever there will be one!

7 weeks late, this was in my mail today:

« Last post by Curt on February 12, 2014, 04:27 PM »
I am using Perfgraph... is not in the tray, it is better ...

While it may be quite good, Pergraph is merely a version of an old CPUID, and hasn't been updated since November 2008. I think that is one of the reasons the site is called "Code from the 70s".

Living Room / Stop NSA Spying!
« Last post by Curt on February 12, 2014, 10:21 AM »
email received:

Today, Miro is joining thousands of organizations and millions of people to end out of control NSA spying as part of "The Day We Fight Back". Can we really take back our privacy? You're damn right we can.

Today we are demanding that lawmakers in the US pass a bill called the US Freedom Act that woud take a first step towards protecting our privacy and ending abuses. It's not perfect, but it's a HUGE improvement.

We need your help today, whether you live in the US or not:

1. Take 15 seconds to sign these three AskThem questions, targeted at key US Politicians.  We need to reach at least 100 signatures on each!

Ask Them:

President Obama: Will you sign the USA Freedom Act?

Senator Elizabeth Warren: Will you co-sponsor the USA Freedom Act?

Senator Mitch McConnell: Will you co-sponsor the USA Freedom Act?

2014-02-12_172038.gif

2. Write your own question for your US Representative or Senator or to any verified Twitter account:

Ask a Question About the NSA: http://www.askthem.io/

Thank you for defending the rights of everyone online!

And we encourage you to try out the incredible new open-source question and answer platform AskThem.io, which is powering our petitions today.

Sincerely,

nicholas and the Miro team
-Help Miro Stop NSA Spying

This is happening the very same day that we in Europe are informed that EU is preparing to demand that ICANN (in USA) must give up the leadership of the Internet and give it over to United Nations. This is not good. This is not safe. Do you hear me? It may be less dangerous to have NSA, CIA and ICANN rule the Internet, than to have UN do it! It happens much too often that sanity is a minority in UN.

I don't know if it is wise in the long run to support any of these initiatives,
but here and now I want to stop NSA spying!

info:
softologic.com is "InstallBrain" (no wiki), not "OpenCandy".

Both are repeatedly said to be harmless on their own, but to me InstallBrain is too dodgy (although not "dangerous") to stay on my computer. I have a couple of times had OpenCandy installed, when I was testing some program, and I saw nothing dangerous happen.

Be patient...they seem to bring the offer back frequently.

-no, they don't; this was only the second time in four years. The frequent offer is merely for the firewall.

http://unchecky.com/ and http://rammichael.com/unchecky-v0-2

The first versions of unchecky were far too "unstable" to trust during installation. The new version .2.xx however is quite good. But still beta without any guarantees...

Tired of unchecking unrelated offers while installing software?

Have you ever felt, while installing software, that the installer tries to push additional unwanted programs at all cost? Ever missed a checkbox, and spent hours afterwards removing adware? Ever opened your browser after an installation, only to find out that you have a new homepage, a new search engine, or even a new browser?

Introducing Unchecky!
Keeps your checkboxes clear.

Unchecky aims to keep potentially unwanted programs out of your computer.
-unchecky.com
While Unchecky v0.2 is still labeled as beta, it’s much more stable and robust than the early v0.1.x versions. More than 20 issues were closed. Many more installers are supported. If you were hesitant to try Unchecky because of its early age, you might want to consider trying it now.

You can get Unchecky at unchecky.com
-RaMMicHaeL

Unchecky Unchecks
Unchecky automatically unchecks unrelated offers, both saving you mouse clicks and making it less likely to miss a checkbox of an unwanted offer.

Unchecky Warns
Installers often try to sneak additional programs as a natural part of the installation. Unchecky warns you when you try to accept a potentially unwanted offer, which makes it less likely to be accepted accidentally.

Unchecky Updates automatically
Install and forget. Unchecky automatically updates whenever a new version is available, so you don't have to worry about running the latest version.

Unchecky is freeware

General Software Discussion / Resource Hacker FX patcher
« Last post by Curt on February 07, 2014, 10:47 AM »
obviously posted via snail-mail:

Resource Hacker is no longer being developed:
Last Updated: 16 September 2011 Version: 3.6.0
I have been overwhelmed by the interest in Resource HackerTM, the emails of thanks, encouragement and suggestions. It's been downloaded many millions of times. However, I've moved on to other things and have no plans to continue its development. Please don't ask for the source code, I'm not releasing it, nor is it for sale.
-Angus Johnson, Resource Hacker

So here is Resource Hacker FX patcher (last updated Nov. 2013)

FX patcher changelog
FX patcher changelog

v1.4.11 (November 23, 2013)
Allow changing languages of Cursor, Icon, Cursor Group, and Icon Group resources.
    Allow renaming Version Info resources.

v1.4.10 (April 22, 2013)
Use real transparent icons for tree view. Now it looks correctly on dark themes.

v1.4.9 (April 12, 2013)
Fix a regression caused by v1.4.6: couldn't open RLE-compressed bitmaps.

v1.4.8 (November 13, 2012)
When dealing with unsupported Delphi forms, show an error message instead of randomly crashing.

v1.4.7 (September 18, 2012)
Fixed AVI preview loop abortion (stop failed if you triggered it on the last frame).

v1.4.6 (September 17, 2012)
Fixed a crash when viewing specific bitmap images.

v1.4.5 (August 31, 2012)
Fix: dialog editor text was treated as UTF-8 instead of ASCII, which prevented from correctly translating Resource Hacker FX.

v1.4.4 (June 29, 2012)
    Fixed search.
Fixed a crash when decoding newer delphi forms.

v1.4.3 (April 19, 2012)
Fixed a hang when trying to decode an unsupported delphi form.

v1.4.2 (March 24, 2012)
Fix: get back the red star in the dialog editor.

v1.4.1 (March 23, 2012)
Use a newer version of the richedit control.

v1.4 (February 1, 2012)
    Partial Unicode support:
    http://rammichael.com/resource-hacker-fx-unicode-support
Replace resource with a double click.

v1.3.1 (January 14, 2012)
Small fix: Remove control properties when adding/removing controls in a dialog.

v1.3 (January 13, 2012)
A new interface and a manifest.
I've used the icons by Yusuke Kamiyamane.
Fixed an incompatibility with some controls, such as SysIPAddress32.

v1.2 (October 18, 2011)
Patch updated for Resource Hacker v3.6.0.92.

v1.1.2 (August 18, 2011)
Fixed a possible buffer overflow when handling a string with lots of escaped characters.

v1.1 (July 2, 2011)
    Added support for png icons/cursors.

v1.0 (March 13th, 2011)
    First public version.

by RaMMicHaeL 2011, 2012, 2013.

and http://rammichael.co...urce-Hacker-FXer.zip

What does the patcher change:

Partial Unicode support. More details at http://rammichael.co...r-fx-unicode-support
A new interface with modern icons and a manifest.
    Icons by Yusuke Kamiyamane.

Resource Hacker FX does not create tree nodes for every language. Usually only one language is used anyway, so it makes it much faster to navigate through resources.

Resource Hacker FX uses the new open and save common dialogs instead of the old outdated ones. Also, some saving as parameters got improved: the directory of the current file is initially shown, the file name gets filled, the extension is automatically added if not specified.

If you have a modified file open and you close Resource Hacker FX, you have a Cancel option when asked whether you would like to save the file. Also, if you choose to save it, it just gets saved instead of saving as.

The Hex viewer shows only the first 10 KB of the binary resource by default to prevent hanging Resource Hacker FX. I could not really fix it, as it’s the Rich Edit control’s fault, it’s quite slow with large texts. Well, it’s not too smart to use Rich Edit to view a Hex dump, but that’s how it works. 10 KB should be usually enough to understand what the resource is about. If it isn’t, you can hold shift to load the whole resource.

Other minor additions, like e.g. double click to replace resource, minimizing/maximizing effects.

    Lots of bug fixes.

The look was still modern in 2011:

The Sanwhole Vole Explorer is (...) being updated so frequently that you would think he is bound to someday make it a well working program

But how far has he already gone; what version are we at?:

Release records:
1, 18-Apr-2013 3.4.30418: First release.

-eh... was version 3.4.30418 the first release? His own words!  :o
Now it doesn't sound equally impressive that the current version number is 3.11.40108
-------

needed:

Framework 3.5 or higher

Windows Media Player Codec if you want to watch more kinds of video.
Microsoft Office 2000 or higher if you want to preview Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint docs.
Adobe Flash Player if you want to play YouTube video in VMC Discovery.
Adobe Reader if you want to preview PDF file.

It is not enough for Adobe Reader to merely be installed, it also must have pdf associated, AND have that annoying Adobe update thing placed in Start.

I will not test Vole any further.

I am still running Win 7 (even though I purchased a copy of Win 8 PRO ten months ago), so I have not taken the time before to really study this thread. To my surprise I now see that you have no link to the wonderful 137 Win 8 "desktop" shortcuts gathered by 7torials (here bundled with 139 Win 7 desktop shortcuts):

#desktop shortcuts, as opposed to keyboard shortcuts.

* Win7+8_(desktop)_shortcuts.zip (1328.01 kB - downloaded 471 times.)

These shortcuts work on any computer. Some of the tools are available only on certain Windows versions.
The collection was made using Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro.

They all come from http://www.7tutorial...ortcuts#main-content

If you want to study the various shortcuts before downloading, you must read http://www.7tutorial...ortcuts#main-content . The first part of the page is about Win 7, and the second part of course about Win 8. The third part is forum posts.
