Does anybody know if that information breakout is available?

I no longer have a subscription to Game Developer Magazine, so I can't answer that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Six free security tools from Microsoft
« Last post by app103 on April 04, 2013, 05:17 AM »
The Malicious Software Removal Tool comes periodically through Microsoft Update, so I figure, why not? It has never found anything on any computer I have owned.

Microsoft Security Essentials has never found anything, either.

But these are only backup security tools for me.

Might be that my primary anti-virus (common sense, upgrades available daily) has been doing a fine job of protecting my PC. But nonetheless, in case it ever fails, I'd like to have that backup running.

Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't seem to be as much of a pig with system resources as most of the AVs I have tried. Only person to ever complain about it is my daughter who always seems to be using the PC when it's doing it's weekly full system scan. She says it causes Chrome to lag. Of course it's very likely she is playing Flash games when it does. And we know what a pig Flash is. I am not going to blame MSE for that.

But if she would sleep at night on Sundays, she would never notice it.

I like Jon Stewart.

Here's the whole thing. The part you quoted is around the 4:46 mark, but the whole thing is great when taken in context, and obvious why it was tweeted by the embassy and supported by the US State Department.  :D

I feel sure that @app103 did not intend for you to remove your joke on his/her say-so. No, that would be censorship. Quite the contrary, it was, I would suggest, a rather subtle joke on @app103's part to start debating the veracity/validity of your joke and then (rather amusingly) contradict that by saying that it must not be debated in this forum    ;D   , pointing ironically and in self-deprecating fashion to a statement of personal opinion (Re: Staple of people from State and Europe !) as though it was the absolute last word on the facts in a debate (which it categorically was not, if you read the thread). Very droll.
(I suspect that @app103 is a bit of a wag with a dry sense of humour.)

No censorship intended...not even self censorship. And I never suggested that it must not be debated on this forum, only not debated in this thread. I pointed to only 1 thread where it was slightly debated. There are already others here, if you care to search for them. I don't want to participate in any debate about the subject on this forum any more due to how tiring it is to debate with people that continuously bring up unrelated, irrelevant topics of things like playground equipment to defend their position, rather than debating the actual topic.

I don't find the subject of dead kids due to the stubbornness or ignorance of their parents (or those trusted with their care) to be a laughing matter. That's not something that's part of my sense of humor. Especially when if my child was only one year older, it could have been her among those kindergarten kids on that class trip, that died from raw milk.

And if you think that makes my sense of humor dry, oh well.

To be honest, you haven't seen my full sense of humor. I have always it on a short leash and my really nasty side off this forum, because I don't want mouser to have to ban me. I like it here.  ;)

Now, back to the funnies, please, which is what this thread is all about.  :)

I’m reading through the latest digital edition of Game Developer Magazine which contains their annual survey.  The salary numbers overall weren’t concerning to me, until I scrolled down and saw the differences between the male and female survey respondents.  The next time someone tells me that men and women get paid equally for their talents in the game industry, I wanted something to link to them.  This is just plain disgusting.

(see attachment in previous post)

The graphic is a bit misleading. It's not "fresh" milk that they say is dangerous, it's "raw" milk. And rather than get into it here in this thread, just see what I had to say about it here in this thread: https://www.donation....msg296283#msg296283

And anybody that wants to debate about this, please don't do it here. This thread is for silly jokes, which this is not one. Go start a new thread in the Basement about it. I probably won't be joining you, though, because I said my piece already in that thread I linked to.

Living Room / Re: Cheap LED torches/flashlights - any good?
« Last post by app103 on April 03, 2013, 12:55 AM »
I have an additional requirement for LED flashlights and would not consider buying one that wasn't the crank style dynamo type. Nothing worse than having a flashlight but no working batteries, when you really need it. That's pretty much like not having a flashlight at all. Also, the cost of batteries over time, can really add up.

Now, in the dynamo type, there are plenty of brands available and not all of them are good or priced within reason. After buying a pair of them to get me through an extended power outage, when I basically had to take what I could get and didn't have the chance to research or shop around, I have learned a lot.

That first set didn't have a very long life. They stopped being able to hold a charge rather quickly. And on one of them, the crank broke off, making it completely unusable.

Before the other one had a chance to completely die on me, I did my homework and found what I believed was the best combination of battery life, durability, and price.

This is the one I settled on (I bought 2): Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light

I couldn't be happier with my choice. I have had them for a number of years now and they are just as good as the day I bought them. They still hold a charge well and the cranks haven't broken off. And living in a dimly lit environment, I use these flashlights a lot. (if you drop something on my living room floor, you'll never find it again, without a flashlight, even with both table lamps turned on.)

Despite being so happy with my crank style LED flashlights, I still miss and long for a replacement to my little Energizer fluorescent tube flashlight, even though they eat batteries like crazy. There was nothing better for lighting up an entire room during a power failure. Tried to replace it with a similar type of battery operated fluorescent tube closet light, but it didn't even come close to being as good. You might like using an LED to light the inside of your PC case, but I LOVED this flashlight for that purpose, more than an LED. Just set it down in the bottom of the case and you could see every inch of the inside. And it's the only flashlight I have come across that you could turn on and hang from the light fixture in the bathroom and have enough light to take a shower. Or set on the kitchen table and have enough light to cook on the other side of the room while your kid did her homework at the table.

I did just find something that looks a lot like my old one and I might just try it. Would be great if it turned out to be just as good.

Chinese Billboards Warn Locals 'Not To Photoshop Officials Into Porn'

Chinese officials have apparently erected a huge billboard in the Shuangfeng district, warning locals to stop photoshopping the faces of officials onto pornographic pictures, in order to blackmail them.

[...]

The billboard, erected in Loudi, warn that police will "Decisively crack down on the crime of exploiting Photoshop technology to blackmail people with compound pictures, in order to establish a good image of Shuangfeng," according to France 24's translation.

Living Room / Re: Has my browser been hi-jacked?
« Last post by app103 on April 01, 2013, 02:58 PM »
The problem you described seems to me like it could have been a corrupted style sheet download (or similar problem) on the search page, which isn't your fault and not usually a sign of malware or anything broken on your computer.

These things have a way of fixing themselves sometimes, if you can clear the browser's cache and reload the page again (which grabs a brand new copy of the style sheet, hopefully uncorrupted). Or in your case, just wait till your browser does that automatically, any way.

In case this ever happens to you again, here is how to clear the cache in IE9: http://www.wikihow.c...#Internet_Explorer_9

How to do the same in other browsers is also listed on that page.

And as mentioned before by 40hz, a script blocker (or even an ad blocker) can mess up pages the same way, if it is blocking a script needed for formatting the page.

Also, if things are broken and then you disable the add-ons, and it fixes itself, but breaks again if you turn them all back on, sometimes it could be an incompatibility between the code of the page and one of your add-ons. To find out which one, deactivate all your add-ons, verify that the issue seems fixed, then reactivate them one at a time, reloading and checking to see if the page breaks each time, till you have discovered the one add-on doing it. Then either check for an update on that add-on, or deactivate it, uninstall it, whatever, till the developer updates it or you have had time to find a suitable replacement. (don't forget to always uninstall old add-ons that you don't plan on using any more)

This is a quote from my DC bio:

I'm not a computer geek. (no disrespect intended) I barely know the difference between software and hardware. (just kidding but close) I just don't have the interest.

I've tried to become more computer-savvy but the interest or brain cells just aren't there.   ;D

Sorry for the confusion.  :-[

And to become an expert user (or just fake it), keep a detailed record of all the problems you have had and their solutions, that way if you (or a friend/family member) ever have them again, you'll have your own cheat sheet to refer to and won't have to go crazy with searching the web for solutions or asking others for help (unless the fix you have listed in your personal cheat sheet, fails).

Just remember that cheat sheets are OS version specific. Make a new cheat sheet when you change Windows versions. What worked for you to solve a problem in Win98 may not be the solution for the same problem in XP, Vista, Win7, or 8, and sometimes can cause more harm than good. Always verify that it's still the solution, if your cheat sheet is from a different version of Windows.

Somewhere, I still have a binder full of stuff I printed out back in the Win98 era. It's full of instructions on how to fix things, how to do things, and all kinds of other stuff. Some of it was things most people would never ever have a need to know how to do (like manually rebuilding the TCP/IP stack). Some of it was stuff I ended up doing quite often (like how to compress a .wav file in Windows Sound Recorder) and much of it was things I only needed to know that one time.

But it felt good to have that notebook. It felt good not to feel so helpless when something went wrong...again. And it was great not to have to wait till my father had the time to walk me through something over the phone...again. Or wait till he had the time to come over and fix it himself.

And if you want to know how much of a computer geek I was when I started that notebook...well...page 1 was how to shut down Windows and turn off the computer properly, through the Start menu.  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Registry cleaning software debunked...
« Last post by app103 on April 01, 2013, 11:22 AM »
've generally found the only place where a decent quality registry cleaner might offer significant benefit is when attempting to cure some persistent oddball system problem in order to avoid a reinstall of Windows.

Yeah, a last ditch effort to save Windows...because by that point, if the cleaner messes anything up, it really doesn't matter.

The only other time I'd consider a registry cleaner is under some very special circumstances, in which most (if not all) of the following apply:

  • It is an application specific cleaner.
  • It removes only keys related to that application.
  • It was created by the developer of that application.
  • It was created to address a specific problem, such as a botched uninstall resulting in some stuck keys that prevent subsequent reinstalls.

Usually a .reg file would suffice, but some companies will release an .exe, just to avoid support issues from less experienced computer users, that wouldn't know what to do with a .reg file.

Living Room / Re: Have you encountered webcam spying?
« Last post by app103 on March 29, 2013, 03:18 PM »
Would you by any chance be using Google's Chrome browser, Opera, or possibly viewing pages with Flash or Silverlight on it?

You might want to read these:

My guess is that if it is a reputable site that seems to be doing it, and you haven't received anything in Chrome or Opera asking permission to do this, then perhaps it's through Flash (not a lot of sites using Silverlight except perhaps Netflix), and the culprit is ads or some other type of 3rd party provided Flash content.

If you are concerned about security or privacy, you probably should change your Flash privacy settings to either always ask or always deny. You can do that here.

And here is how to change your Silverlight settings.

If you have done all of this and your anti-keylogger software is still complaining about some site trying to access your webcam, the software is probably full of the stinky brown stuff, especially if it goes on to tell you that it blocked it. Some security software likes to scare users by reporting a ton of crap that it "blocks", in an effort to make you think it's doing something useful, so not only will you not think about uninstalling it, you might even think it's worth upgrading to a more expensive version. It's an effective marketing tactic that goes all the way back to software firewalls of the last century.

In any case, it's still a good idea to unplug external webcams when not in use and keep them capped. And not just for privacy and security. Keeping them capped also keeps the lens cleaner.

Copied text can be captured with plenty of things.

I like using Notepad2 with the /b command line switch to turn it into an automatic pasteboard. Keep in mind that it will not autosave the file. You have to do that manually.

Check the command line switch section in the readme file for more stuff it can do.

I've come close to making a parody of Ads/DRM/Copyright in some kind of game form. The only thing stopping me is my utter lack of game creation skills.

There is an amusing old school one that's been around for years on Neopets. You can play it without an account. It will bring back the nightmares of 1999; in a safe, controlled environment.  :D

It was great, way back when, for training kids not to click the popups or malware installers.

Advert Attack - ... it's the latest game from Virtupets Studios - Super Race. It's a no-holds barred race to the finish where you control Ace Zafara and try and sprint faster than the computer-controlled Race Robot. Click on the 'Go!' button as many times as you can to make Ace run faster.

However, the marketing department of Virtupets Studios has been trying lately to earn extra revenues from this game's popularity... you have been warned!

That was really cute. But a part of me doesn't like it because the cynic in me says that would never actually happen in real life. It's too implausible. Too scripted. But it sure is a cute, romantic idea.

Well, neither would Paperman.   :P
