Gimp should open it too, unless you are hit with the same error.

General Software Discussion / Re: Good Video Player
« Last post by nudone on May 13, 2009, 01:57 AM »
maybe you need to associate the file types that aren't playing. KMPlayer should play everything you throw at it.

try dragging and dropping the files that don't play onto an open KMPlayer - if they don't work then something is very wrong.

this won't be too helpful as i can't remember the version number BUT...

i'd been using Paragon rather than Acronis, i started to recommend Paragon to people i know. they used it, backed up their main drive, all seemed fine.

the problem was/is that two, possibly three, people i know could not restore the Paragon image when they tried (i think i had the same problem but i can't remember now).

Paragon would appear to restore but on rebooting the machine the system would be corrupt somehow - to the extent that typical fixes didn't sort it out. the only way to restore their system was to find alternative image backups... by Acronis.

now, i know Paragon must work, and i know it did work. this particular version just didn't - it might have been a linux boot disk version.

what i recommend (and it will sound extreme - but it's safe, you can't deny that), is to do two backups of your system using two different products and then test them both out. that's the only safe way of knowing if you've got a backup that isn't going to work.

no point leaving it until you need your backup image restored only to find it doesn't work - AND that's the only backup image you have.

we know that duke nuken forever will never live up to the expectations (if it is ever released).

i hope that they had the forsight to keep a video diary about it all - it will make an interesting documentary regarding what was really going on - more entertaining than the final game could ever be.

« Last post by nudone on May 08, 2009, 03:58 AM »
it must be a couple of years since i said how much i love DC. i know it often is said by other members, i just tend to forget that all forums aren't like this one.

i really don't bother with other forums but i have been frequenting another for a few months now. it seemed almost on a par with DC; everyone friendly and willing to help out it seemed. everyone seemed very sensible and amiable.

now, just recently, quite a few of the core members have decided to gang-up on a relatively new member. their methods and remarks have been quite alarming to me - they've shown themselves to be pretty immature and intolerant (i'd jump to conclusions and say they must be children but i know they are old enough to run their own businesses).

also, these same core members found humour in someone's disability - mainly through their ignorance so i was willing to forgive them that.

i'll not go into details of who and where; i just wanted to say that i've just realised (again) how special DC and everyone here is. and mouser, of course. i'm still waiting for the owner of the other forum to step in and provide some calm and reason to the situation - just like mouser would do - but i suspect it won't happen.

apparently, it's a myth that they change colour as a means of camouflage (i learned that by watching QI), it's to do with their emotional state - or something.

Speaking purely personally, I find the count mildly interesting and informative.
To me it's not always a high number of postings that catches the eye. Sometimes, a comment from a long-time member whose posts are few somehow adds weight to the matter.

Living Room / Re: Android phone - anyone using it?
« Last post by nudone on April 29, 2009, 02:31 AM »
right. well, i was hoping that 3G would be working in my area - i know that it's not perfect coverage though.

i see that there are new phones coming out that are Android enabled, samsung is doing one, can't remember the other. so, maybe in a few months i'll look at getting one.

i'm glad you like it though, Deozaan.

What I would like to know, mouser man, is what makes you go searching for this stuff on the net? Shouldn't you work on your phd instead? :D

Heheh.

(daren't read the article - i'm sure i'd start worrying about having a tape worm of my own.)

if i close the databases and just use the default (help) knowledgebase then it starts up quickly. so, i think it just must be the number of large images i've got in all of the other knowledgebases.

i may use Evernote for a specific type of 'note' instead, i.e. notes that i create myself rather than pages grabbed from the net - that's a decent compromise.

right, thanks. i'll see if Surfulator opens up any quicker if i load in a smaller database. then i'll see what they say on the Surfulator forum. i may still try Evernote - the text inside image recognition is appealing.

<<Off topic>> Nudone, I just spotted a Cody duck in your Icon/Avatar! What's with that. Is there a prize? Sneaky but fun!  8)
-SleepingWolf (April 28, 2009, 10:11 AM)
well spotted, but I have no control over Cody, he comes and goes as he pleases. if you explain to mouser where you saw Cody he well have a prize for you (or maybe just seeing Cody is a prize in itself).

(this is just a suggestion for if/when jgpaiva has time to update dialogmove - i know he's very busy at the moment.)

in addition to the hotkeys that allow you to make dialogmove remember a window, it would be nice if there was an option to do something similar by using the mouse, i.e. a right click context menu would be perfect.

example:
1. a dialog window opens - it's one that doesn't fit within the rules you've set for dialogmove (or it does fit within the rules but you don't want this particular window to move).

2. you right click on this dialog window's title bar (if it has one) and then from the context menu that would appear, you have the four choices that relate to the current hotkeys.

3. you then select from the menu the action you want the window to perform...

- make detectable by title
- make detectable
- make NOT detectable by title
- make NOT detectable

i think this would be a really nice feature.

yeah, so AXEM doesn't show itself - I'd only need to to start DialogMove and nothing else.

at the moment, FINGERS CROSSED, the .exe version is working okay with my anti-virus (avira). i've simply changed the name of the dialogmove .exe file so Avira doesn't recognise it - i'm assuming it was just picking the name out it's database.

right, hmm, well my database is 300 meg - perhaps that is justifies the length of time it takes. i don't know???

is there a way of running AXEM silently?

it looks like i can run AXEM as admin (on vista) and then DialogMove will be able to work properly with UAC enabled.

(i can't run the script directly with admin privileges - only appears to work with .exe files.)

screencast postponed again. the dialogmove icon isn't appearing in my system tray when i run the .exe version - well, sometimes it appears and sometimes it doesn't (it isn't hidden).

maybe i'll just have to go back to using the script version.

it's the latest version of Surfulator, tomos...

i just tried it; it takes about 12 seconds to finish loading (with four knowledge bases), and that's on a dual core 4800 amd chip with raid striped raptor drives. there are a lot of pictures in the things i've grabbed though - maybe that's why it seems slow - or, i admit, maybe i'm being too picky.

edit:
i'd like to use Surfulator to keep quick and simple notes but when it takes 12 seconds to load up it's not really convenient - that's why i was wondering if EasyNote would be a better choice. i could leave Surfulator running in the background i suppose but, by some strange coincidence, my (vista) machine has just blue screened (which it never does) whilst running Adobe Illustrator and Surfulator at the same time.

i'm about ready to make the screencast. anyone want to add anything that they think i should mention.

i notice that the .exe version of dialogmove gets picked out as a virus (false positivie autohotkey again), but it looks like the script version isn't detected. has anyone had issues with this - i could recomment do use the script version in the screencast.

I've been using Surfulator but I'm wondering if Evernote, either v2.2. or v3, is quicker to load. Any thoughts on that, superboyac?

Living Room / Re: Has anybody ever tried a FON router?
« Last post by nudone on April 27, 2009, 03:10 AM »
Some of you may be familiar with Fon and the Fon movement. Fon is a company that sells (used to give em out for free) wireless routers for a pretty cheap price. Catch is, you have to agree to share you internet via the wireless network made by the Fon router. Thanks to the Open Source community, alternative firmware is available. Among the choices are DD-WRT, OpenWrt, and Legend which are all Linux based. Although the flashing process is not easy, the payoff is worth it.
sounds good. i didn't like the idea of sharing my connection.

edit:
it's not available in the UK yet.

i'm using the scheduled tasks method of running Everything. i admit it's a bit of a faff but once done it all works as you'd expect - so, can't you just do a similar thing for your bank apps?

(defender seems to be running fine on here, too.)
