I installed Facebook Disconnect just a day ago
-Jesper Hertel (August 26, 2011, 05:26 PM)

Be aware that Facebook Disconnect gets rid of the Facebook "Like" buttons on all websites except Facebook.com. I am personally glad of that feature, but it can cause confusion if you're on a site that says "Click the Like button to get your free content!" and the Like button is nowhere to be found.
Which is actually a good thing, since you're less likely to get hit by clickjacking that way :)

I've successfully reformatted the 500Gb drive to NTFS, and am creating another image with Macrium Reflect Free.  I anticipate it will be a single file, and should work fine.
Next time, perhaps check out convert.exe :)

Their god is dead, and I definitely don't care - if there is a hell, I'll see him there.

Some manufacturers' have already put DisplayPortw outputs on gfx cards....as with everything: The good thing about 'standards' is that there are so many to choose from.
Especially when greedy bastards want license royalties... then new stuff emerges. Like in the case of HDMI -> DisplayPort.

I use @ and have been known to use @@ and even @@@
I use '@' as well - it looks good  :-[, and allows you to add more important (ie, lower ascii value) if you realize something is more important. I used to use '#', and settled on '@' when I realize '#' breaks certain stuff (like Windows' .chm viewer - probably because '#' is used for HTML anchor hashtags).

For people who need a tip on sorting order, check the ascii table :)

No wonder that random-writes are slow, especially considering Windows defaults to not enabling write cache for these kind of removable devices... but interesting that 4k random reads are so slow!

Sad - GBM had a nice amount of configurability and acceptable GUI... and Timeline was a nice idea (never checked the implementation though... is there any similar software on Windows?).

Another one bites the dust, I guess.

General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam
« Last post by f0dder on August 22, 2011, 02:54 PM »
If they're labeling it as an "obligatory download manager" instead of an installer, they can probably get away with it.

This really pisses me off since some of my software is listed on that site and now has this extra setup garbage.  FWIW, I have never submitted any of my software to ANY site other than my own.  I have sent an email to CNet and have asked them to remove my software from their site.  For posterity, and since I had to submit it via their online form, here is the email I sent them:

There _IS_ a difference between !$var==[somevalue] and $var<>[somevalue].

In '<>' the characters are compared up to the length of the right character string, e.g.
Hm, if that's true then there's either a bug in the PHP documentation (pretty likely) or a bug in the implementation (almost even more likely).

Screenshot Captor / Re: BUG: Save location remains in use
« Last post by f0dder on August 21, 2011, 05:53 PM »
This is pretty normal behavior - when you use the Get{Open,Save}FileName functions, Windows changes the process' (yes, it's per-process and not per-thread!) current working directory, and you have to actively save/restore the CWD if you don't want that behavior.

Keep in mind that OFN_NOCHANGEDIR "is ineffective for GetOpenFileName", so you might want to do manual CWD save/restore even though that flag exists. I seem to recall OFN_NOCHANGEDIR not working on some (ancient by now :)) Windows versions, but might just have confused that with not having effect for GOFN.

Living Room / Re: The Fourth Reich: Facebook's Like button banned in Germany
« Last post by f0dder on August 21, 2011, 01:25 PM »
I had nothing but contempt for the European governments before, and my opinion has only sunk further into loathing.
Because of this?

Seems like a pretty sensible thing to me, really. Apart from being a lame "so ein ding müssen wir auch haben" thing, the 'like' button functions as a tracing cookie for facebook. And no, you don't have to actually press it in order for the tracing to happen.

Who on earth would 'like' government pages anyway?

And it's sensible enough to ban anything government-related from using facebook for anything. Would you like your government to be reliant on a big datamining P.O.S that has been known for shutting down pages for no good reason?

This software is in the grey area of legally accepted conduct,
Indeed it is - similar services are already employed by the criminal underground, and usually used for things like registering free email accounts for the purpose of spamming.

I'm not sure I like the idea of making a tool like this public - as an individual, you really don't spend that much energy on solving a captcha every now and then. Ah well, if you awarded credits can only be used for solving other captchas and there's no dollar-payout, it might not be that bad.

what I hate more are the ordinary folks that celebrate these types of people as capitalistic heros, fighting the good fight to make money at all costs.
Those people don't deserve the ice-pick treatment. It'd be more appropriate for them to wake up in a 3rd-world country with no money.

If push comes to shove, that particular patent has a life expectancy measured in milliseconds if they take it to court.  But they're definitely bottom feeding here. I'd guess Microsoft would be amused to learn their Win7 "anytime upgrade" button is patented.  Expect amicus briefs to be filed shortly - along with a motion to invalidate the patent. :P
Would Microsoft be able to enter the fray if they aren't being sued by the company? Makes you wonder why they're bottom feeding...

Trollsys.

"A button that says upgrade" is dumbing down the actual patent a bit too much, but nevertheless is is a silly patent, and the trollsys guys are the kind on (un)human beings that deserve to wake up with and icepick in their skulls.

fSekrit / Re: LATEST VERSION: fSekrit 1.40 shrinkwrapped!
« Last post by f0dder on August 16, 2011, 06:35 PM »
Although some of the users posting here have evaluated this security solution alongside PGP/GPG, it should be noted that simplicity in security is critical.  Even among some of the most paranoid, security conscious people I know, NOBODY uses PGP for some reason.
PGP serves a very different purpose than fSekrit, though, and it's still worthwhile for those reasons. I store my passwords and other stuff in fSekrit documents, but if I were to receive encrypted email I'd prefer something pubkey encrypted... and if I need to sign data, that would also be with something pubkey based. It'd probably be GPG rather than PGP though :)

1. Any way to perhaps rename or change a fSekrit file so it will transfer across email services that block sending executables?  Maybe a zip file inside a zip file or something similar?
Not something I would implement in fSekrit, as it's a pretty specialized usecase. Also, trying to subvert such scanners would likely get fSekrit blacklisted :). I have plans to support loading/saving ".fSekrit" files instead of only dealing with the .exe containers. Would that work for you?

2. You mentioned over on portablefreeware.com awhile back that you'd open the source code http://www.portablef...dex.php?id=784#14386  ... any chance that's going to happen?
Yeah, it is - I know I've been very very slow in making good on the promise though. My girlfriend got me hooked on world of warcrack at xmas... need I say more? :-[

I know this is an old project so if you'd like it to mothball, I certainly understand.  Thanks for your work on it so far.
I still use it daily, so I don't feel like abandoning it. I was working on some substantial rewrites, though, and got stuck on some boring-to-write code - that, combined with a zillion real-life things (and warcrack >_<) sucking up time unfortunately pushed fSekrit to a fairly low position on the priority list.

I'm hoping to change that soon, though. Being done with the education system and having found a job means more spare time :)

Living Room / Re: Firefox fixes the version number problem

The version number bumping Mozilla has been doing lately is silly - and now they want to hide the version number? That's outright stupid. Yes, you should be running "version latest", but as long as stuff breaks (and not always just in a "fix the version number in the .xpi" way) with updates, people aren't going to do that.

I'm all for a more agile release cycle, and making updates painless is a very good idea - heck, 100% automatic update to bugfix versions is a decent idea. But as soon as something changes - no way. At least there needs to be a way to turn it off. It might work just fine for all your regular joes, but for power users and enterprise situations? No. No, no, no and no.

Any idea where I can get them from, f0dder? Or anyone?
Around here they're usually used to strap luggage to bicycles, so I figured a well-sized bicycle shop is where I'd look first :)

I've always found case sensitive filesystems (and the use of them) to be utterly moronic and confusing - this is another fine example
Maybe a bit daunting at first, and I don't know the original justification, but I've gotten quite comfortable with it; not confusing at all.
Original justification is probably laziness, or some ill-conceived performance reasons - it's more code+runtime work to make the filesystem case insensitive.

I've never seen a good reason for case sensitivity, though, case preservation is sufficient.

What I find confusing is this particular choice of file naming.
I've seen '.C' for C++ files... so it kinda makes twisted sense in that mindset.

I saw one time a person who used rubber bands (the big, postal kind). He used two of those, twisted around the drive and the twisted ends were put through chassis openings in the 5,25" bays. The drives were suspended, creating a very silent PC.
Did that in a server once, and it worked very well. I'd be a bit cautious about it today, though, since rubber tends to wear out. I've been considering repeating the success, but using stuff like this instead:
845_890_bs.jpg

Also, after getting a work laptop, I hardly use my personal laptop anymore... and I put a 120gig SSD in that. So I'm also considering replacing my 2x74gig raptor stripe with that - then I'd be entirely free from mechanical disks in my workstation.
