What do you mean with "short of", 40hz?

"short of" means that "the most drastic/expensive/unpleasant/insert adjective here" solution follows... so, in this case I'd read it as 40hz saying that there really isn't an alternative to Gizmo Richard's TechSupport Newsletter and that if you want one, you'll probably need to write it yourself. Of course, I could be wrong... 40hz?

PS 40hz himself answered while I was typing this, but I'm posting anyway in hopes that defining this idiom can be laid to rest ( ;D)

give 'em a break, they made a mistake in terminology.  an embarrassing mistake, but just an honest mistake.

While I agree with that terminology SNAFU was a mistake and that this is forgiveable, I had the overall sense that the newsletter was a bit OTT - as I said, FUDD.

Yeah, I don't use tagging at all at the moment. I can see how it might be beneficial, and I know others here love it, so thought I'd look into it. I'm leaning toward a pass on this offer...

Anyone upgraded to v.10 yet  :o
I've not Darwin. I looked it over and didn't see that the upgrade would make a lot of difference for me. So, although I respect JPSoft and like to support shareware development, I don't think I'm going to given the price and perceived cost/benefit ratio.

What are your thoughts on the upgrade?

Ken

You just spelled 'em out  ;D

Subject line says it all... but to clarify, I'm wondering if anyone has any real-world experience with this application and can recommend it? I have PaperPort Pro 11 and am not sure I need this. However, I am intrigued by its tagging abilities (which PaperPort lacks). I don't think that 8 hours will be enough for me to make a decision, however, so here we are...  :-*

Brandon - I've replaced the hinges on my Compaq notebook cheaply through eBay... and it was eight years old at the time. Search for your model name and number and see how you get on...

I'm with Jim - when I have shaved in the shower in the past, it has been sans miroir... Because I like to shower in fairly hot water, I got incredible shaves this way - with a Gillette Sensor, no less (I try to get rid of the "little tiny hairs stickin' out my face" today and "zip, zop, my face is ripped to shreds"!).

To address Jim's initial quesiton, though, cartridge razor blades have risen in price over the past twenty years. Hugely. Perhaps they have simply kept pace with inflation, but they certainly seem much, much more expensive now.

Alright, I'll nag away at my parents for that RAM. I do need to get the monitor fixed, though... It's really strange, solid metal (or iron, or solid something silver) just snapped like a twig...

(I'll post a picture here in a couple minutes)

Probably cast aluminium...

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by Darwin on February 12, 2009, 03:11 PM »
Yup - I follow the Collectorz forums for those apps for which I have lifetime licenses. You're right on the money, Jim. Collectorz seems incapable of NOT pissing off its longtime customers, which has had people on their own forum, and certainly here, speculating that it may all be by design... The general attitude is not confined to Alwin, though. I had a protracted exchange with another Collectorz big-wig over the swtich in licensing model and while I got what I wanted personally, none of my advice was taken (ran along the lines of yours above - post and make sticky a general explanation of the decision and how it affects current users and acknowledge that it was VERY badly handled). I digress, my real point is that even when conceding that my argument was sound and offering a solution that was acceptable to me, he couldn't resist getting digs in at me. Some fairly large egos there, I think.

Personally, I'm not pleased that the two Collectorz apps that I REALLY love (mp3 Collector and Photo Collector) are withering on the vine. mp3 Collector is slated to be merged with Music Collector, but I'll wager that even with lifetime licenses for both products there will be an upgrade fee to pay. That wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world for me, but I know that that would lock the end-user in to paid upgrades for the new application from that point on...

I get that this is business, that they need to evolve to keep revenues coming in, and I have no problem with any of it, I just don't understand why otherwise sensibe, articulate (in a second or third language no less!), and highly capable people would bungle things so badly, all the while seeming oblvious to... Well, the fact that their actions are offensive and alienating for a start and to the fact that it would be so easy and painless to do things "right". They could have their cake and eat it too...

Over the course of a year, you'd break about even, and you get to shave in style!
Is that counting the costs of getting stitches at the emergency room?
And, is Edvard just your nick name?

100 MB of disk space for the program itself? This looks more like an office suite with built-in desktop search, if you ask me...
And 128 MB RAM is already half of what my Eclipse IDE (a very hungry beast) usually needs.

We're coming at this from very different perspectives: I have a 320GB harddrive and 4GB of RAM. The effect of this being installed on my computer would be minimal - like a flea on an elephant  ;D Most computers purchased in the past three years have at least 512MB (and more like 1GB) of RAM factory installed and probably more than 80GB harddrive capacity, so...

This could be a cool tip that helps for a short time: I bought a new car (Fiat Linea Multijet) that I can use 2 years without paying it back - after this time I can also decide to change it with another one. It´s cheaper than my old vehicle (Punto 55) at driving (I must admit that I use the old car also).

You mean you financed it and got a deal that lets you pay nothing for two years?

Total Uninstall[/url] keeps a list of programs that it's both installed and uninstalled.  Not free, but a good product.

Ashampoo Uninstaller does this as well, as long as you don't delete to log files it creates when you install a program.

Living Room / Re: [NSFW - Parody] Sony Releases New Piece Of Technology

I don't mind swearing, but when it's overdone and for no apparent reason (like in this video), it bores me. Enough that I actually found the whole video relatively boring.

My point exactly (I'm not above swearing, and it can even be humourous in the right context/done right)  :)

OK - I'm getting old. While I agree with the sentiments expressed in the parody (of the Sony POS), I thought the amount of gratuitous swearing detracted from the humour.

BTW, bgd77, the Snuggie is a real product marketed here (in North America), and I've shaken my head a number of times over the idiocy of it... actually, I'm never sure which idea is more idiotic: that someone would dream it up, that someone would market it, or that someone would actually buy it!
1372
BTW, AutoFocus is also base partially on Lucene so that should make it quite familiar to you...
All the best.
It looked fairly interesting until I read the hardware requirements section...

Hardware requirements

    * CPU: the absolute minimum is a Pentium II at 400 MHz, a Pentium III at 1 GHz or better is recommended.
    * main memory: minimally 128 MB, 256 MB is recommended.
    * disk space requirements: 100 MB + 2 MB per 1000 scanned items.

They don't seem that bad to me...

Living Room / Re: Please tallk me off the ledge... Intervention needed!

Agreed. Updating the CPU on an old notebook is not ECONOMICAL (doesn’t seem that econonical on a new one, either!) as the ROI is very low. Example, when my now 9 year old notebook was two or so years old, I really wanted to upgrade its PIIIE 600Mhz CPU to something faster. Unfortunately, the BIOS limits the computer to no more than 800MHz. Even on that equipment, I’d never notice the difference in speed, and the price was astronomical. FWIW it’s still running that PIIIE chip and runs like a champ. My son and I played CFS on it last night - great fun!

In my case, I was curious about the effects of a 30% increase in processor speed combined with reduced battery wear, lower operating temperatures, AND more advanced processing capabilities/features... (SSE4, for example) on relatively current equipment. This particular Gateway is CPU upgradeable and will accept any compatbile chip - there are literally thousands of forum threads devoted to documenting the upgrade to various newer chips, so I’m not worried about the surgical aspect in my case. However, as many others have noted in this thread, I am unlikely to notice the difference (only my wallet will know!). To wit:

I finally played with a friends T8300 machine (2.4Ghz) running similar equipment to mine (15.4” WXGA monitor,7200 rpm harddrive, 4GB of RAM and 256MB dedicated video memory) except downgraded to XP Pro 32-bit. I really didn’t see any difference worth spending several hundred dollars and voiding my warranty to obtain. I expect that having several hours compare, say, editing video on it and on my machine might reveal major advantages but I don’t edit video... To be honest, I much prefer my setup - I run Vista 64-bit with all graphics options enabled and it is beautiful and SNAPPY. His machine is for some unfathomable reason set to 1024x768 and Windows Classic and looks NASTY. My five year old XP machine is set to Windows Classic as well, but is running its 14.1” monitor at native resolution and looks fine.

So, as I’ve stated in the past, I *know* that in my case this is a severe expression of upgradeitis and I started this thread so that people with more self control and a firmer grasp on reality could line up to kick me in the ass for contemplating a fairly silly expenditure. Thanks guys (send bags of peas, please)!

Brandon - you will notice a huge, HUGE difference in performance if you upgrade your RAM - far more so than in going from 1.6 to 2.0Ghz processing power. Another very effective speed boost comes from going to a 7200 rpm harddrive. If you’re ruinnig SATA in your notebook, the prices have come down a lot and the capacities are competitive. A four year old notebook is worth simple upgrades but not, as I hope I have noted effectively, major upgrades such as to the CPU. Of course, if  your notebook is in bad condition as you say, maybe it IS time to upgrade the whole thing. Note, though, that you can things like monitor hinges and casings on eBay quite cheaply. I recently replaced the LCD in my Win2k machine for $45 courtesy of eBay...

or a killer deal presents itself.

sounds like an excuse to buy something new when you know you shouldn't.

 >:( Am I that transparent  ;D

You're right though - whenever I give this much thought I can't see the point. I guess the sensible thing to do is use it as is until prices come down... a lot and then see if I really need to bother. I certainly don't NEED this now  :o
