Martin at ghacks posted a very sweet write-up of Little Voice Commander today  :-*

http://www.ghacks.ne...n-software-for-kids/

One of the coolest features of the program is the ability to add your own photos to it. You could add photos of parents, grandparents, pets or locations that are familiar to the user to add a personal note to the program.
...
All in all it is a great program that will keep kids entertained for some time on the computer. Even better, it makes them associate words with images.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Middle mouse button for showing LBC
« Last post by mouser on May 24, 2011, 06:48 AM »
There is an easy solution:
You can define different hotkeys to show LBC or show it as a pop up menu, etc.
And then just program your middle mouse button to trigger that hotkey.

v1.36.01 - June 3, 2011
  • Better reporting and options to disable speech if SAPI runtimes not found.

v1.35.01 - May 31, 2011
  • Now includes over 100 audio voice files provided by DC member Renegade (Ryan Smyth) that can speak each word as it is displayed.  Thanks Ryan!  Users can create their own audio files (as well as their own image files).

Little Voice Commander is a toy program for young toddlers who are just learning to start to speak.

The program runs full screen (across multiple monitors if present) and listens for a child to speak or press a key.

If the program detects something being spoken, it finds the best match for a word it has photos for, and displays some random photos for that word, as well as the word text. If a key on the keyboard is pressed, a word beginning with the pressed key is displayed, along with some photos for that word.

Users can add their own photos easily, so you can customize it with pictures of mom, dad, sister, brother, dog, cat, house, etc. It will scan labeled photos on startup and add those words to its vocabulary.

It uses the microsoft speech recognition engine, which is ok but not ideal. I wouldn't expect to be able to use this to teach any kid how to pronounce words -- it's more to encourage very young kids to babble and give them the experience of having what they speak affect what it shown in a semi-consistent manner.

I hope people will help by making some additional image packs for the program from royalty free photo sources. Thanks to DC member App103 (and http://www.freestockphotos.biz) for collecting the initial set of royalty free images, and to Stoic Joker for the program name suggestion.

Note: This program is based on my more grown up MultiPhotoQuotes screensaver engine.

those panasonic phones are quite nice.

i would suggest you do the same thing i would suggest with any mystery hardware problem.  go buy yourself a cheap non-electronic non-wireless no-frills corded telephone, and verify that the 3 always works with it.  if not, then you know the problem has nothing to do with your panasonic.  and you can keep the non-powered phone as backup in case you ever lose power.

If anyone who lives in the US wants a tiny packet of sugru -- and when i say tiny i mean it, less than size of marble -- send me a pm with your name and address and i'll put one in an envelope.  i have about 5 to give out.  Mention which color you prefer (black, blue, orange, green).

Congratulations all.

let's do a test to make sure this approach is going to work:

Go to any page in your web browser that has a link on it, like this page, and select some text that includes the link and hit Ctr+C to copy it.
Now go to your mail and hit Ctrl+V to paste it.
Does it preserve the link now the way you want it to?
If so, then this should be fairly easy to add to TFLM.
13438
i tried dong what you said, but the html code remain as text...it is not "interpreted" as an html link.

ok that's important and something i didn't know.. am i write that you are using Microsoft Outlook (or Outlook express) as your mail client?

It sounds like maybe the only solution would be to add an option in tflm that would let you create richtext or similarly marked up entries (ie with font formatting and html links) and paste the completed text as such.. i'm going to have to think about that a bit more.

Actually maybe all I need to do is add an option that says to paste the text (put the code on the clipboard) as html.  That would be fairly easy i would think.  Maybe I can whip together a version to test if you are willing.

(or does someone know an easier way to paste plaintext into outlook such that it will interpret it as html?)

A follow-up on his excellent writeup in 2009,  Samer from Freeware genius has just posted a new roundup of 43 more great freeware windows utilities.

I was surprised to discover some new applications I didn't know about on the list, and as before Samer does a terrific job of describing each of the programs on his list and just why he likes them.  And I'm proud to say one of my applications (Find and Run Robot) made the cut.

If you use windows, this is a must-read from one of our favorite software blogs.

The common theme here, as with the first one, is that these are all cool free Windows “enhancements”: i.e. apps that tweak or change the way we work with the system environment itself, whether it is working with files, folders, or applications; they are, to quote my first post “apps that brings functionality to the Windows environment that could or should have been built-in options in Windows”.

Hi Mariano, welcome to the site.

I have TFLM integrated into my usage of thebat email client, but I'm afraid I don't know how to integrate it into other mail clients.

Could you elaborate a little regarding:
i was wondering, is there a method to add an html link into a "checkbox item".

I'm not sure exactly what you want to do -- if you are using TFLM to create html emails you should be able to put in text like
<a href="http://www.amazon.com">click here for amazon</a>
without any problem; it won't look pretty in the preview screen but presumably your mail program should interpret it correctly.

13444
Would be nice to have an online version, as you've suggested.

i think you've found a 2nd project in your quest to learn php/mysql!
13445
This makes me wonder about a web/desktop version which let you assemble a collection of form widgets to make your own daily report form, which recorded values in a little database for you, with interactive graphic stats.
13446
Ok so don't laugh but as an experiment i've made up an end-of-day "after action" report form to try filling out at the end of each day.

I am curious as to whether filling these out might help me focus on making each day a more memorable and discrete event.. Rather than having days flow into one another ever more rapidly.

Honestly it's a bit silly even for me, but I thought I'd give it a try.

I also have no idea what to put on this thing so I just made up stuff.. If anyone wants to try the experiment along with me I'm attaching a current pdf of it suitable for printing.  But even better would be if anyone else wants to make up their own forms and share, or suggest additional items to add to the page.

Note that the goal is a printable single sheet that is to be filled out at the end of each day.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Hang while "searching history"
« Last post by mouser on May 21, 2011, 04:14 PM »
There are a couple of things to try.

I guess the first thing is to test if this has anything to do with items in the history or if the problem is that your normal hard drive is going to sleep and taking some time to wake up.  Can you try clearing your search history (go to search history tab in options, right-click and clear), and then leave farr unused for half a day and then invoke it and see if it has the same hang.

Another thing to try is on the General tab, tell FARR to stay in memory longer.

Let me know what happens with those test.

the preview should not be shoppy.  if it is, capture will be worse.
what resolution are you set at? try going to video format options and changing the resolution of the capture to something smaller.
can you try any other video capture tools or something that comes with ExtraWebcam, does it preview smoothly?

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?
« Last post by mouser on May 21, 2011, 12:02 AM »
I've finally gotten myself a NAS and am looking for an automatic versioning backup system that will monitor my document directories and make versioned backups automatically.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the posters in this thread -- I'm still not sure which product to go with but OoopsBackup is high on the list and this thread has made for some useful insights.
