General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« Last post by 4wd on August 12, 2021, 07:49 PM »
EDIT: v5.6 has disappeared from F-Droid, (looks like they only keep the current and previous two versions).

Old versions here: https://k-9-mail.en....com/android/versions

Should I uninstall the newest version before installing v5.6? Thanks

Yes, export K-9's settings first, uninstall it, sideload 5.6, and import the settings - you will need to enter any passwords for accounts, they don't get exported.

Also, I'm not sure but the earlier versions from UpToDown might auto-update since they're just the APK pulled from the Play store whereas F-Droid versions are built by F-Droid from the repo without the Play store link so can't auto-update.

I've attached F-Droid's 5.6 version.

Downgrade instructions at K-9 Mail's forum.

Does that go for Bluemail, that you mentioned before?

Try FairEmail, you can get it from the Play store or F-Droid, (the F-Droid version can't use OAuth due to Google policy - F-Droid builds are unsigned), it has a Unified account view but you can also set it to open to a list of your accounts.
It also has a lot of options to set it up how you want, can't seem to find one to move the menu button to the bottom though.

Well, it looks like side loading from the F-Droid compiled version has broken whatever Play store link there was, it hasn't tried to update to the latest version.

So I'm stuck with v5.6

Does that go for Bluemail, that you mentioned before?  I tried it - not the new version - on one account only, so didn't see multi-account behaviour.  It's pretty, but I came across a comment that it saves your mail in its cloud, which I would much prefer to avoid.

Yes, defaults to last email account used but it's a unified one by default, to choose another account you have to go through a menu, (which is at the top left of the display, naturally 🙄).

According to their privacy policy, they don't save emails on their servers.
If you activate the Instant Push facility, emails will transit their servers long enough to grab header info, (1-2 seconds for the Push notification), then they're deleted.
For some of the other optional facilities they'll store enough info to enable them to work but none of them include storing your emails.

Fwiw, I only use BlueMail on my tablet for three 'junk' Gmail accounts, (ones I'd rather not clutter K-9 Mail with).

You can get previous versions, (don't know how many), on F-Droid.

Is this the 'interface' where backing out of one account to review the others exits the program completely?

Yeah, there's no longer an account list like in the old interface, if you hit back you exit.  To get to other accounts you have to go through the menu.

People on Play aren't really happy with the new version.

I grabbed 5.6 and reloaded it ... EDIT: Sideloaded apps aren't linked to the Play store so they'll never update, is this correct?

Had a look awhile ago for another email app but all the ones I could find went for the hiding multiple accounts under a menu and trying to get you to use a Unified inbox.

« Last post by 4wd on July 13, 2021, 01:40 AM »
For those that only keep track of Windows 11 through here:
There appears to be a 10 day grace period after you update your Windows 10 computer to Windows 11. That is the full period for trying it out and rolling back to Windows 10 if Windows 11 is not to your liking. Don't expect a roll back to be a smooth experience, make sure you have all your Windows 10 drivers and such backed up safely on a portable device or cloud drive. Portable device is better if you only have only 1 computer available during that period. Internet may or may not work after the roll-back, and in that case, you'll be much happier when you can install your drivers from that portable device instead of being cut-off from your cloud drive.

Even easier to rollback by just restoring the system image you created before you upgraded to Windows 11 ... you did create one, didn't you?

These Walmart laptops only have 2 cores.

The only Ryzen 5 laptops in that price range on their website seem to be Ryzen 5 3450u CPUs which are 4 core, 8 thread with Vega 8 gfx based on 12nm technology.

Ryzen 5 5500u based laptops are just starting to become available, (6 core, 12 thread, Vega 7 based on 7nm technology which should reduce battery drain), which are current generation and have a performance equivalent to the previous generation 4500u/4600u.

I think you want Split Tunnelling, but I'm not sure OpenVPN can do it at the application level, only network routes.

Some VPN providers do application level split tunnelling, (eg. WindScribe), where you can either specify apps that will, (Inclusive mode), or won't, (Exclusive mode), use the VPN connection.  But that only applies to a single VPN connection.

Seeing as you seem to want multiple VPN connections and be able to direct certain programs toward a specific VPN connection I think you'll have to resort to proxies or stay with VMs.
Yeah, I want do this, if I am not mistaken windscribe uses openvpn (tap driver)

Depends on the protocol you set it to use, OpenVPN, IKEV2, WireGuard, etc - I use WireGuard, connections are normally faster due to less overhead.

For anyone else wanting to play an old SWF for capture, you can use Adobe's Flash Player Content Debugger and then use any screen/window capture program.

Same thing with ffmpeg, simple commands don't work, the same 0 seconds output as the video convertors above.

In that case try converting the SWF to images first:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. ffmpeg -i input.swf output-%05d.png

That should output every frame as a consecutively numbered PNG, (if there's more than 100,000 frames you'll need to increase the 5 in output-%05d.png).

Then it should be a simple matter of using ffmpeg or any other video program to convert the images to video.

You're not able to PM me the original file, (or upload to gofile.io or somewhere and send a link)?
I use ffmpeg and/or other video programs almost every other day but I don't have any SWF files to try, (can't remember the last time I saw one).

Have you tried ffmpeg?

Code: Text [Select]
  1. ffmpeg -i input.swf output.gif

Will probably result in a file larger than the original, you could also try conversion to WEBM.

Code: Text [Select]
  1. ffmpeg -i input.swf -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 30 -b:v 0 -an output.webm

Might need to play around with the CRF value to adjust your output quality. See here.

Simple PowerShell script to create zero byte file in all sub-directories:

Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. <#
  2. p0b.ps1
  3.
  4. In a Powershell console:
  5.
  6. path/to/p0b.ps1 -dir <dir> -file <file>
  7.
  8. Example:
  9.
  10. ./p0b.ps1 -dir r:/abc -file hello.txt
  11.
  12. #>
  13.
  14. param (
  15.   [Parameter(Mandatory = $true)][string]$dir,
  16.   [Parameter(Mandatory = $true)][string]$file
  17. )
  18.
  19. # Get a list of all sub-dirs
  20. Get-ChildItem -Path $dir -Recurse -Directory | `
  21. # For each one create a file
  22.   ForEach-Object { New-Item "$($_)/$($file)" -ItemType File -Force}

NOTE: The -Force parameter will cause existing files to be overwritten, remove it if necessary.

PS. PowerShell doesn't care what you use for a path separator, / or \

The top drive is 5400rpm, what's the bottom drive?

If the bottom is 7200 or 10k rpm then move it to the top and think about putting a case fan mounted on the case to the right, (so it blows air between them). A slow rpm 12cm fan will be all that's needed.

If they're both 5400rpm then I personally wouldn't worry about it unless they're consistently running at higher than about 35°.

BTW, the top drive doesn't appear to have mounting screws on the side we can see?

Any chance of a photo from the left angled towards the front, (to give a better idea of the mounting points)?

Also BTW, if you want a Simple No Holes Required Mounting Solution:

drives.jpg

As long as the computer isn't moved around often, (eg. dragging it along to LAN night), this'll be fine.

For a case, if you're only looking to have 2x2.5" + 2x3.5" (no 5.25") then the Thermaltake Versa H17 or H18 isn't too bad, (I have the H18). Cheap and one of the smaller mATX cases, (honestly, most mATX cases these days are bigger than my old ATX mid-tower).
Also done a couple of builds in the Silverstone Temjin 08 case, they can take more drives and are slightly smaller.

Someone will come up with something fancier but it gave me something to do  :)

It's only requirement is PowerShell 7 or higher, (I no longer use earlier versions).

Doesn't write to console, just directly to the output file.

Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. <#
  2.   pinger.ps1
  3.
  4.   Run: pwsh -F path\to\pinger.ps1
  5. #>
  6.
  7. $ip = "8.8.8.8"       # IP/site to ping
  8. $file = "R:\ping.csv" # Output file, (will be output as CSV)
  9. $maxlag = 40          # Latency above which to go beep
  10.
  11. # If it ain't PowerShell 7+ we don't want to know about it.
  12. if ($PSVersionTable.PSVersion.Major -lt 7) {
  13.   "Requires PowerShell 7" | Out-Host
  14.   Start-Sleep 10
  15. } else {
  16.   While ($true) {  # Loop-de-loop
  17.     # Ping a site once and select latency
  18.     $lag = (Test-Connection -ComputerName $ip -Count 1 -Ping -IPv4 -DontFragment | Select-Object Latency)
  19.     # Format file output and append latest to file (date time,ip,latency,exceeds max)
  20.     "$(Get-Date -Format 'yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm:ss'),$($ip),$($lag.Latency),$($lag.Latency -gt $maxlag)" | Out-File $file -Append
  21.     # If latency is above maximum allowed value ...
  22.     if ($lag.Latency -gt $maxlag) {
  23.       # Go beep
  24.       [console]::beep(1000,500)
  25.     }
  26.     # Sleep, restful sleep ... for all of 2 seconds >:|
  27.     Start-Sleep -Seconds 2
  28.   }
  29. }

File output is in CSV format:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. 2021/05/17 22:22:35,8.8.8.8,6,False
  2. 2021/05/17 22:22:37,8.8.8.8,17,False

I find Osmand a little slow for navigation, (probably not a problem for walking).

Another alternative:
  • Install Maps.me
  • Go to Wikiloc and download your track in KML format, (Google Earth)
  • When it's downloaded, go to files, hold your finger on it, and choose to open it with Maps.me
  • Maps.me will load it and save under bookmarks, (the star in the menu strip)
  • Open bookmarks and select it, Maps.me will display it and automatically download the required map area

Aren't you glad there is no Windows Phone anymore?  Mine came with off-line maps already build in. And could use cellular masts to do a "poor man's GPS" triangulating position. Used it in this city myself (on foot), some 4 years ago, maybe 5 by now.

Same as Android's Low Accuracy Location mode - it will use mobile and WiFi networks for location, (and lower battery drain), when GPS is turned off or there's no signal.

However, it is very inaccurate if you don't have reception from at least three towers, (pretty much how GPS is useless without 3 satellite signals on cold start).

And technically it's trilateration :)

A bit more trivia:
Triangulation would require two receivers at two different locations, (or one receiver moved between two locations), because it uses angles to get the distance from the towers.
Trilateration only requires one receiver at one location but uses three transmitters. It uses the broadcast transmitter position along with signal strength, where the transmitter radio spheres intersect is your location.

If you've ever logged your GPS track and lost GPS coverage but still have mobile coverage from one tower, you'll see that the track will sometimes jump to the location of the tower.
