what sort of leadtime are we talking about for First Class entries, and how do we determine what qualifies?

Given that these are likely to be more sophisticated or (for want of a better term) comprehensive is it perhaps a situation where an entry needs only to be useable and with most of the intended functionality in place by the end, but actively being supported/developed towards 'completion'?

darwin, regarding vent -- i have no hood now, and there is no outside vent for it.. if i do end up moving the oven i may get a recirculating (ductless) vent.. though i have no idea if those actually "do" anything useful.

They make a lot of noise, which I suppose is intended to give the impression that they are actually doing something, though that doesn't stand up too well when your kitchens full of steam (or smoke :-[)

and despite the amount of noise they make, it still isn't enough to drown out the damn smoke detectors...

Looks like this may have moved or is in transition:

FWIW, it's been a bit now since I worked through a fair chunk of the original lessons but I am finding that it has turned out to be helpful for me.

thanks for the update!!

As I said, disabling the soundcard DOES have an effect, which is why I'd like to find a tool to help me out ;)

aah, my bad (DOH!!)
1206
this doesn't help, but it sounds like (?) a power hum (leaking from the PS?)

if it is then disabling the soundcard probably won't have any effect (the fact that muting has no effect would seem to support this...)

« Last post by Target on March 22, 2010, 12:19 AM »
not sure if I've gotten this back to front or not, but I'm assuming from you're comments so far that you're only backing up to one machine...

this being the case it would seem to me the obvious thing to do would be to setup a backup routine on that machine that would periodically scan for that drive, then back it up if it hasn't already been done for that period instead of worrying about drive letters and platform changes.

there are probably any number of backup solutions that will do this, some even do incremental backups, but it should be simple enough to put something basic together that would do what you've asked

and if this is the case, how often would you want to back up (daily, weakly, etc), and how many copies would you want to keep?

What about an auction with the proceeds going to donationcoders?

or an 'auction' with the proceeds going to the charity of your choice?

actually, why not just put a price on them with the above as a criteria, ie i assume from your descriptions the books are all mint, so 50% of the replacement price probably wouldn't be unreasonable (YMMV - I have no experience here, but this seems like a reasonable guesstimate).  User pays shipping, and the funds to go the charity...

Developer's Corner / Wordoid.com - make up words and test them out
« Last post by Target on March 18, 2010, 05:50 PM »
ran across this one this morning, Wordoid.com:

http://wordoid.com

wordoid.png

Wordoid is an online service that allows you to 'make up' words and scan the net to see whether or not they are already in use.
Service could be used for domain names, or more usefully to work out a title for that killer piece of software you're developing.

Rar is indeed the archiver of choice for software pirates.

I was unaware of this... I wonder why?

most likely for the same reason everyone else uses it, because it's a good product (dare I say a leader in it's class...)

Whoa! That pirate crack was a joke, I'm pretty sure. I don't think anyone is accusing you of being a software pirate (?). My read on that comment was that it was a pun - equating "rar" to a pirate's "arr" (as in "Arr, me mateys").

However, while I believe that my reading of it is correct, looking at it again I can certainly see how you would interpret it that way.

could be, but that fact that he stated it twice kind of makes that assumption a bit questionable

FWIW, I wasn't particularly offended personally, but making blanket statements like that sure isn't a good way to win points, nor does it contribute in any way.

Non-pirates seldomly need .rar support.

clearly I'm going to need to update my resume - I've used both RAR and 7ZIP for years but never considered myself a pirate

I laboured with very limited resources for a very long time (when all my friends were buying 500G SATA drives I was still working with a 40G IDE drive, and I still only have a dialup internet connection) so the need for an efficient archiving tool was paramount.

They both offered (and still do) far superior performance and options to the existing ZIP solutions, without being so obscure that I can't share a file when I need to.

I don't run any sort of file sharing, I don't post or download pirated software,

yet somehow because I use a legitimate piece of software I am suddenly a pirate?

I somehow doubt it, and I for one consider those sort of statements to be purely inflammatory, ie your claims are  unsubstantiated and contribute nothing

and if you can't offer constructive statements, why post them?

try running a diskwipe util on it, then repartition it again and see what happens...

« Last post by Target on March 15, 2010, 01:27 AM »
your only goal at this point is to see if windows will recognise them, so the first step is to make sure you have a valid partition.

given that you're not interested in any data that might be on those drives my approach would be run the partitioning tool of choice over it and create new partitions (if you can - if not, then you can be pretty sure you don't need to go any further ;)).

you can then clean up any dud sectors in windows afterwards if you decide you want to use them...

it would be interesting to see whether it can be used for other devices as well (nice find BTW, many thanks!!)

this functionality probably exists in most 3rd party file managers

in total commander the numpad '+' key brings up the filter select dialog and you can enter a choice manually, or pick from a list of options (audio, video, archives, etc)

interesting that everyone has taken issue with the banks stance in this instance, yet no one seems to query the fact that Carol responded to a publicised offer to renew at a given price

In this case there it would seem there is an obligation on the seller to substantiate their claim (the bill!!) and/or meet the advertised price, or to refund your purchase.

I don't know what the consumer laws are where you guys live but here it's called false advertising when you advertise at one price and charge another.

International purchases will undoubtedly make things more difficult, but it may be worth inquiring to the relevant authorities about the magazines (not necessarily the banks) behaviour...
