General Software Discussion / Re: Any better Clipboard program.

Back years ago I tested ClipCache for a while. [...] revisited CC and bought it when on a special deal. It has been on my main laptop for a long time time now and has never crashed and I dont purge very often so there are a lot of clips
My impression was that it crashed on me not because of the number of clips, but something to do with the OS, and whatever other programs I have running.  Whatever the cause, I rarely run it now.

Ejem : a coding snack ? to convert or extract emails from eml files and put together into a txt file ?
I've no idea how hard it would be, but it's worth suggesting a coding snack.  If it is hard, it can always be ignored  :)  As I said, Google found some payware ones.

I really wanted to like Clipmate but something in the many modes of operation keeps confusing me.
I found it too complex.  It offers too much, which makes it hard to get to grips with.

Clipcache - has a "power paste" like feature and I though CHS too
I don't use ClipCache much because it seems to crash so often.  The last freeware version, 1.41, did very well on Win95, 98, and (I think) 2K, but started to crash readily on XP, particularly if I ran Outlook or an application that had to be accessed by Citrix.  To my disappointment, so did the registered v.3 series.

CHS and ArsClip both have at least limited (tab only, I think) "power paste" features.

I have noticed though, that whether with CHS or clipcache - I don't seem to use the features much. Perhaps I should do a concerted effort
I don't either, though it might be a different story if I had to transfer data between two different databases or something like that.

I think it's because its basic functions are outstandingly smooth and easy that I like ArsClip so much, and use it as my duty clipboard enhancer.  It offers more features if you want them, and they're easy enough to get at, but aren't in your face.  Indeed, nearly everything is controlled from the popup.  You don't see ArsClip's equivalent of ClipMate's or CHS's main window unless you go looking for it.

CHS is smooth too, but always seems a "heavier" program to me.  It has more features, but then again ArsClip has some features that CHS doesn't.  They're both worth having.

Thanks very much, rjbull, for the "powerpaste" features in CHS and ArsClip.  I'm glad to know about these.  Now I have a place to start looking if I ever decide to replace ClipMate.
If you're a dedicated ClipMate user I doubt you'll really want to, but they offer very competent freeware/donationware alternatives to recommend to others.

Arhgg, I said it wrong again, didn't I.
I've done a lot of that myself lately  :)  I'm glad to hear that CFi Clipboard+ can be operated with the keyboard, which I much prefer to mouse.

I was trying a few moments ago [...] Am-DeadLink is perfect for bookmarks or favourites.
The Web site says it can accept tab-delimited or comma-separated text files, so I thought of it as a two-step process, first extract the links and paste them into a file, then run AM-Deadlink.  I couldn't quickly find a freeware that would extract links from EML files, though Google found some payware ones.

You might find Gizmo's Best Free Web Site Link Checker interesting.  Doesn't mention AM-Deadlink, but includes some others, plus free Web services.

I haven't tried it, but AM-DeadLink from Aignesberger Software?
AM-DeadLink detects dead links and duplicates in browser bookmarks and text files. If a bookmark has become unavailable you can verify and delete it permanently. Additionally you can download FavIcons for all your Favorites and Bookmarks.

AM-DeadLink is Freeware!

AM-DeadLink can check the following resources:

    * Internet Explorer Favorites
    * Firefox 3.x bookmarks
    * Opera bookmarks
    * Chrome bookmarks
    * HTML files
    * URLs from tab delimited text files
    * URLs from comma separated text files

I don't know of an extractor at present, though.

It should be possible to store everything within the database, even if only a copy, to make the database portable and easier to back up.
Whenever I read that such-and-such "should" be the case, it usually means that what I have read is an arbitrary, unsubstantiated opinion (unless there is some special law or rule that supports it). The case would seem to be no different here.
I would recommend that we leave the design of the database to the engineers who are building the thing - or, as my mother used to say to me, "Don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs." The engineers are usually far from stupid, and are likely to be able to fully appreciate the need for portability and backup and a few other things, some of which we might not even have thought about, as well.
"Should" is here used more technically than morally.  The programmers aren't necessarily the users, and don't necessarily have the same priorities.  I would like to be able to store all data in the one file, for ease of back-up, and portability.  I realise this may not be ideal in some ways.  I suppose the best system would be the ability to set a default storage method that could be overridden on a note-by-note basis.

or maybe Stick?
Stick is a Windows application (Windows XP/Vista/Windows7 only) which offers utilities such as folder explorers, web browsers and notepads in tabs that attach to the sides of your screen (called ScreenTabs). ScreenTabs are super customizable tab-shaped windows that let you access the aforementioned utilities quickly and easily.

Just possibly minipad2?  Web site is Chinese, program is in English.  But it doesn't quite fit...  not sure it does RTF, for example.  Interesting-looking thing, and improved since I last looked.

What I like most about CFi is the speed and simplicity.
Is it keyboard-centric, or mouse-centric?  I prefer keyboard, and noticed that BdJ had textBEAST on offer (again) the other day.  That looks to me very mouse-centric.

It has what I need.
I find that with ArsClip  :up:

CFi is about ShellToys: right-click access to 53 context-sensitive shell extensions, and 25 small special programs
I think they could be clearer about licensing.  I eventually decided that the license was for all their tools, though if you look at their main page, you might think they are licensed individually.

Sadly CFi will not accept to be delayed.
Could you set it to not start with Windows, then start it with a batch file, which presumably could be delayed?

As mentioned earlier FF screwed my system some time back, so is rarely used, and lives on a stick :)
Sorry, I overlooked that.  Do you use Opera?  Sanity check - I haven't tried this - but there's MakeLinks for Opera:
MakeLinks is an extension for the web browser Opera that will search for all web addresses in text form and display an in-page popup of clickable links. Optionally, there is a mode for automatic detection of text web addresses on the entire page.

ClipMate.  One feature that I use a lot and that I haven't found in other programs I've tried is ClipMate's PowerPaste.  It will automatically paste each item from the clipboard in order (ascending or descending) into any document.

From CHS 2.04.01 Help:
CHS now has a stack system that will let you easily copy multiple clips into a stack (queue), and then paste them back out individually (or as a block) in a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) order.
[...]
In addition to pasting as a solid text block, you can paste items with simulated TAB keypresses between then, which is useful for form filling.

From ArsClip online Help:
Form Mode

ArsClip supports pasting multiple items into a program by Form Mode (popup -> Misc -> Form Mode). When in Form Mode, you click an item on the popup, ArsClip pastes the item, simulates a TAB keypress, and then displays the popup again. This process repeats until you press Cancel. The TAB keypress will move focus to the next form field in a web page, or in a program. Sometimes a non-text item will receive focus in a web page, so you can press the "Next Field" option on the popup to skip to the next text field.

The Keystrokes option in Permanent Items is a more flexible way of pasting items and simulating keystrokes for items you paste often.

Probably neither are as flexible as ClipMate, but both offer probably the most common multi-paste requirement.

@IainB:
I don't think we're disagreeing, but I'm alarmed by your sheer intensity!  :o  I only half-understand your concepts, which leads me to be concerned that, should you have your way, CHS might become too hard for ordinary folk to use.  cf. Ultra Recall, where I have a license for an old version, but never really got into it because it looks too complex.

Further, I have to keep reminding myself that CHS is only one of mouser's projects that he doesn't get paid much for...

If I have these applications installed, I don't really need anything else.
Does that mean you're going to donate all your other licenses to charity?

HALF a zillion, rjbull ;-)
So modest  ;D

My first concern is if the program is easy to use, and stable.
These are important points.  I have ClipCache installed, but rarely use it because it tends to crash too often.

CFi ShellToys Clipboard+". I like this one the best.
I haven't heard of that one before  :o  What do you specially like about it?

My own regular clipboard enhancer is ArsClip.  Basic features are very easy, it has more if I want them, and it's been very stable.  I sometimes use mouser's CHS, which has a different feature set.  When I was at work, I used to use them simultaneously...  Also have a license for ClipMate, but it's not installed at present.  It offered more than I needed and seemed too complex, but has the most features of all.

Most modern browsers have in built-in spell checking or offer it via

tools.  So editor Ritho went searching for free online proof-reading
services and found five he liked but one service was a stand-out winner.

I want to be able to repeat this action so as to build a list of URL's for later processing, with each entry on a new line.

magician62, do you use Firefox?  Because if you do, here are some extensions that might help:

  • Copy Links
    Copy multiple URLs in anchors to clipboard.
  • Copy Link URL
    Copy the URLs of the selected links to clipboard.
  • Copy Link Text
    Right-click a link to copy its text; also optionally offers ability to right-click drop-down menu items, buttons, and other form controls to get their text or values
  • CoLT
    CoLT makes it easy to copy either a hyperlink's text or both the link and the link's text (in a format you specify). Two handy context-menu items make this possible, and don't add clutter; the items are only visible when right-clicking a link!

Try going to the Mozilla Add-Ons Page and searching "copy links" or "copy link."

I currently have Downloadhelper, FlashGot, DownThemAll, Scrapbook, Screengrab and some other add-ons in Firefox.  At one time or another one of them has been able to do something that one of the others couldn't, or was easier with.  Thinking of trying IDM and maybe now Getright.
Could I ask your thoughts on whether IDM or Getright could replace the add-ons I have?
I'd like to try and streamline the number of programs I use if it's even feasible.
Can't help much, I'm afraid.  I haven't used any of those FF extensions, nor Getright.  There's also ReGet, which I seem to remember had some feature that IDM didn't, but I'm happy with IDM now.  I have used Free Download Manager (FDM), which supported proxy.pac files before IDM did and worked well, but not used it for a while.

IDM can download entire Web sites for offline browsing, but it doesn't replace utilities for clipping text or images from the Web, in the usual sense.  You need something else for that.  For that job I've used Evernote, Ultra Recall (a bit) and briefly looked at a few other things.  In a way, Evernote sort-of answers the OP, because it does clip URLs.  However, mine is the last desktop version, 2.2, and it's now gone cloud, which I don't want.  CintaNotes is a good freestanding Web clipper as long as you only want text.  Mouser's Clipboard Help+Spell (CHS) is a clipboard enhancer that now saves the URLs of Web clips (and also now clips images, despite the home page not having been updated to say so).  But, neither CintaNotes nor CHS understand and save the URLs within a page, only the URL of the page itself.  Another clipboard enhancer, ClipCache, does, but I've found recent versions somewhat fragile on my system.  I'd guess ClipMate would be certain to, as the Big Daddy of the genre, but I don't have it installed at present.

Sorry, not much help.

I am not looking for a downloader program, the URL are for later processing.
Don't overlook downloaders...  I think Internet Download Manager (IDM) can do what you want.  You can clip an area on a Web page, then go Tasks > Add batch download from clipboard.  It gives you a screen where everything is listed, with checkboxes to mark those you do/don't want.  Those required are put into a queue, which you can start at any later time you want.

Genie and BU4A are "backups"; SyncBack is a sync program, basically creates a mirror.
You mean, backup as in, keeping multiple earlier versions?  You're right, SyncBack doesn't seem to do that, even though their Web page clearly says it's a backup program.  It does seem a good synchroniser, though.

Mostly I've felt file sync was good enough for what I wanted, augmented by proper multi-generation backups of really critical things like KeePass files.  I can see circumstances where a real backup would be acutely necessary...
