Oh, I don't know.  Aren't degrees of affection, as tested by a snogometer, measured in hertz?
There's  some question about that, especially if the degree is only a third.
-cranioscopical (May 24, 2010, 06:57 PM)

Clearly, those would be the black hertz.
Very good, can I buy you a bier?

anyone noticed how these threads come in waves?

Many files and folders I create or obtain start off on my Desktop.

nothing wrong with that, like i said I think this is more aimed at those people that have nil or very rudimentary organisational skills.

I provide a lot of support to my colleagues and it horrifies me to see how many just dump all their files into a single directory (they don't even use any sort of consistent naming convention :o), and to know that they don't see a problem with that.

or maybe I'm just a bit OCD ;D

and thanks to whoever added the screenie to my original post

Target, I understand what you are saying.  I probably am not expressing it accurately.  I'm pretty well respected at work...I know how to balance this stuff better than I'll be able to describe.

not a problem, I was worried you'd take it personally, when it wasn't meant to be.

Good thing here is that your interest has been piqued, which means you'll probably try and learn more - downside is then people will be pestering you for solutions to their problems :Thmbsup:

For all the negative stuff we see and hear about all things MS, at the end of the day their office suite is incredibly capable and powerful if we only knew how to use it to it's fullest (I know I wish I did  :-[)

Anyway, about 40hz somewhat off-topic point that I brought up...yes, when it comes to work, I get very goal-oriented.  I used to be goal-oriented 100% of the time and quite irritable about it.  but as I've grown older and wiser, I've learned to appreciate the process a lot more.  And what's more, I've tried my best to be less irritable about it all, and embrace both sides.  Often times now, I realize that it is wiser to appreciate the process rather than the final product. Why?  I feel that's where the socializing and interaction is taking place, and that is a beautifully human thing.  I attribute my 'ends justify the means" to my immature side now.

But, again, with work it's different.  At work, you have to get things done.  Too many people are not getting things done, i get really sensitive about it.  At some point, you have to be the ass and put on that face.  You have to.  So, please forgive me for that mode, that's my work personality!

there is nothing wrong with this approach, in moderation...

unfortunately there is a real danger that you can be percieved as not actually getting anything done because your continually asking everyone else for a solution to your problems.

And unless you can show that you've been trying to resolve an issue people can become reluctant to help because you're interrupting whatever it is they're trying to do so they can solve your problems.

please don't take this as a personal criticism.

I understood what you were getting at and it's not intended that way, it's just another point of view and something maybe worth considering...

this is probably nothing new to you guys here, but many (most?) probably support more than their fair share of technically challenged users

saw this yesterday at how to geek - Zen and the art of file and folder organisation

The article basically describes a set of guidelines for managing data that may be useful for showing people the 'right' way to do things (hands up all of you who know someone that just dumps everything to my documents or the desktop, or even worse, c:\)

i love when we have these threads where one forum member is able to help another -- (nice work Target!)

FWIW, it's a buzz to actually be able help out.

this was actually a a pretty good find, albeit accidental.

it looks like the potential here could also be far greater than one would normally expect from humble keyboard (and lets be honest, they're not normally very exciting), so I'm guessing a lot of people will be watching this one closely

I'm aware that it's not "on demand." However, I see that, in a general sense of usefulness to a wide variety of users, many projects have been taken on and completed that would seem to be of use to only a very small number of people. The app I requested is either of more general use or at the least in the same category. Why are some potential coding snack projects embraced while others are totally ignored in terms of at least making an attempt to code the app, since all of them are intended to be freeware anyway?

sorry to hear you feel like you've been ignored, this isn't the case.  Coding snacks are taken on a purely voluntary basis by individuals who feel they can provide a solution (ie it is within the relative scope of their time, knowledge and/or skills).  If no one here feels they can do whatever it is you're asking for at a given point in time then they're not going to chip in with anything (why volunteer for something you can't do?).

Don't give up on us just yet though.  The community here has an amazing capacity for finding things, even long after others might have consigned your request to the too hard bin (here's hoping ;))

Start taskschd.msc and create your tasks with the system. There´s all you need and it´s really simple.

The original poster has already mentioned that he doesn't want to use the built-in Windows Task Scheduler.  Target, you seem interested in this one...you want to take it?

happy to have a crack - it'll be monday before i can look at it though

What would happen if one instance of the EXE was in its delay when I make the second call to clear the tooltip? If the answer is to my liking, I could make the delay 5 hours, or so, and essentially get the behavior I want.

as it stands subsequent calls will kill the existing instance - to change that amend the opening line to

    #singleinstance, off

the only issue here is deciding what tooltip belongs to what call - plus you'll end up with XX instances of the script running concurrently (which may or may not be an issue)

My reason not to write a PowerPro script is that I understand THAT even less than my deplorable knowledge of AHK.  Also, I'd probably run into the same problem.  And also, I think tooltip is an AHK facility, no?

I'm with you - I used to run Powerpro strictly as a custom launchbar, and I thought the language looked quite powerful (this seems to be the popular view) but I never was able to get into it.

It is probably safe however to assume that powerpro has an equivalent to the tooltip functionality

further to skwires explanation here's an example that writes to an ini file, but as he says, as soon as the exe...umm... exits, any windows or values are lost

;AutoHotkeys.ahk
;Vincent Kruskal's Hotkeys
;Skrommel @ 2007
;Kruskal  @ 2007

#SingleInstance,Force
#NoEnv

iniread, tooltipflag, VKh.ini, flag, status

If ToolTipFlag = 0
{
MouseGetPos,x,y,winid,ctrlid
WinGet,pid,Pid,ahk_id %winid%
path:=GetModuleFileNameEx(pid)
ToolTip,%path%
iniwrite, 1, VKH.ini, flag, status
}
Else
{
ToolTip,
iniwrite,0, VKH.ini, flag, status
}
sleep, 5000

exitapp
Return

#q::
  SoundPlay,C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Sound Effects\silence.wav
  Return

GetModuleFileNameEx(p_pid) ;by shimanov at www.autohotkey
{

   If A_OSVersion in WIN_95,WIN_98,WIN_ME,WIN_XP
   {
     WinGet,name,ProcessName,ahk_id %p_pid%

   result:=DllCall("psapi.dll\GetModuleFileNameExA","uint",h_process,"uint",0,"str",name,"uint",name_size)
   DllCall("CloseHandle",h_process)
   Return,name
}

and the only reason this one works is because there's a short delay at the end to display the tooltip...

seems like the original solution might still be the best one for your situation

just out of curiosity is there any reason why you couldn't translate the script into powerpro?  I suspect this may alleviate a lot of the issues you're experiencing (don't ask me, I don't know the language, but my feeling is that it shouldn't be that hard to do... hehe, famous last words...)

I'd like to understand how variables, such as tooltipflag work, such that it keeps its value over two AHK calls but not over two calls from PowerPro.

the original AHK script is persistent, ie it runs and stays resident.  Triggering the hotkey fires the routine which assesses the value of the tooltipflag variable and processes accordingly

calling the recompiled script from powerpro destroys the previous instance, and the script starts again from scratch - in this case the 'default' action is to display the tooltip, so repeatedly running the script will have no discernable effect

What is the significance of your (true) assumption that I compiled the code?  Would it work as I wanted if I didn't compile it?

no particular significance, it was just my assumption of how you were doing things - ultimately it probably wouldn't make any difference (other than the fact that you need to have AHK installed in order to run an uncompiled script)

do you have a firm list of the app's you want to run?

this is important if you want them to run specific actions instead of just starting up...

the conditional IF statement determines what happens depending on the value of the tooltipflag variable - IF the variable contains a value, show the tooltip and , ELSE clear the tooltip

the reason it's not working for you without the hotkey (and I'm assuming you're compiling it) is that it resets the flag every time and the code that clears the tooltip is never called

if you remove the hotkey, how do you fire the script off?

i think the answer is to use a delay then to destroy the tooltip (but the above still applies...)

note that the code is untested, but I've just omitted the unnecessary lines so it should work as is

i have enough fun with this sliding cursor as it is - but you are welcome to modify it into a game, Perry (truth is, it takes me too long to accomplish anything with autohotkey to try "fun" stuff).

it's all fun (in a hair tearing, teeth grinding kind of way...)

thank you, Target, you are my hero of the month (i would never have found that keyboard otherwise).

no thanks necessary, hope it works out (keep us posted)

i wasn't actually looking for anything this, I just happened to see it when I was browsing a suppliers website for something else and it looked like a winner

FWIW the dreaded gadget goblin came out in me when I saw it and now I have an overwhelming urge to get one even though I have no need or use for it whatsoever (but it's shiney and new and it's got lots of buttons and backlighting it's gotta look really really cool on my desk, not to mention the potential geek credits at the next LAN day)

here's a couple of other reasonably (?) priced suggestions

the MS sidewinder X6 is promoted as a gaming keyboard, though I don't see why it wouldn't be suitable for your requirements (seems to offer plenty of options for customisation).  Big bonus with this one is that the numpad is detachable and can be clipped to either end of the keyboard so you could retain the numpad AND add a second device if the builtin options aren't enough

and logitech have a cordless numpad (see here - worth noting that my supplier of choice has these at half the price quoted on that page)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: mount virtual folders
« Last post by Target on May 05, 2010, 06:37 PM »
I may not have understood what it is you're asking for, but could you not leave the files where they are and setup a folder with shortcuts to the content?

it should be pretty trivial to setup a script to monitor the source folders periodically and update the shortcuts, and you could use a junction to map the folder...

of course this presupposes that all the source files are accessible to all the users....
1198
i've been using this simple script to slide my cursor around my screen(s) by hitting buttons on my house...

for some reason this rang a bell with me too...

My initial thoughts on this would be to move the cursor incrementally within a loop (so there is something to break out of)

eg
mousegetpos, xpos, ypos

loop
{
    mousegetpos, , ypos_
    if ypos_ <> ypos
        break
    xpos++
    mousemove, xpos, ypos, horizontalspeed

    if xpos = %rightscreenwidth%
        Break
}

this is an example only - I haven't tested it, but it should break out of the loop when it reaches the screen width, or if the mouse position varies vertically (this being a horizontal movement)

Site/Forum Features / Re: NANY 2011 :: A New Concept -- Have your say!
« Last post by Target on April 15, 2010, 08:48 PM »
sorry, thinking out loud here...

I can see the value of giving people more opportunities to contribute, but is there a danger that the longer lead time for apps with more substantial development requirements may dilute their association with NANY?

As skwire said part of the appeal for NANY watchers may be the frantic rush to finish entries within a relatively short window, and the availability of a slew of new apps all at (more or less) the same time.

Apps that have been under development over an extended period will have had (possibly) substantial exposure well before the normal NANY window, and as such may not be seen as being part of that exercise.  This isn't necessarily favourable for the developer(s), but then again this may offset the fact that some of these applications might overshadow some of the more 'traditional' NANY offerings
