General Software Discussion / Re: The definition of "bloat" - RE: Software
« Last post by justice on February 08, 2008, 07:55 AM »
App: You just described the opera "web browser". A more appropriate term would be suite, but they dont have that title. I dont know any other browsers which have an email, torrent, or chat client built in. Heck, even mozilla realized this and shutdown the mozilla project.
actually it's still developed: http://Seamonkey is the all-in-one application formerly known as the "Mozilla Application Suite", containing a web browser, a mail and newsgroups client, an HTML editor, web development tools, and an IRC chat client in a single software package.

IMHO an application becomes bloated when it starts to do things outside the realm for which it was created.
I'd like to add to that. As this is a subjective quality, one could say Nero is now an all round removable media manager as opposed to a burning application.

So my definition would be as follows:
an application becomes bloated when it incorporates functionality outside the realm for which it was created and this functionality impacts on the responsiveness and / or footprint of the application .

Which for Nero is still the case. But software evolves through user needs. It's rather like cars: each successive VW Golf added more options and upgrades until there was a need for a new value model, to which more features are added over time to seduce users to keep spending cash etc. That's how Photoshop elements was born I guess. That's how there is an increasing need for Firefox Elements :P, Windows Elements..

yeah this works great.
what i would do in your case:
go back to the options and untick the program files directory.
then do the following farr query (<tab> means pressing the tab key):
c:\Pro<tab>ado<tab>\pho
photoshop is now the first result. launch it
from now on you can just query farr with one of the following queries:
photoshop
p shop .exe
pho shop
photo .exe

or whatever you like. But because photoshop is now in the recent history list like mouser said, you don't have to include all of program files. Hope that helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?

it does help that they've not added it as an alternative, but made it harder to browse, finally some "usage direction" from microsoft.

Just for reference sake, same issue is being discussed at a later stage at: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=11987

OMG found another one: the shortcut for Artrage 2.5 Free edition starts with a space, which means it's another program FARR cannot launch. I think the stupid idea with this one is that it shows up as the first entry in its start menu group. Makes me wonder what kind of hacks are in the rest of the software, although it's a most excellent program.

To reproduce:
download artrage from http://www.ambientde...com/artragedown.html
install it (without desktop icon if it asks, can't remember0
try and launch it from FARR

If you know of any other software that this issue affects I'd recommend to post it in this thread. That way we get a better idea of the importance of this bug.

they did when CS3 came out but due to issues with it they disabled the option in the menu. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista-SP1 available today (Feb.4th)

Well it's finished now (released to manufacturing), but it's not available until mid-march:
In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com

Living Room / Re: Microsoft Disavowing Vista?
« Last post by justice on February 04, 2008, 01:35 AM »
classic comment:
As Directions on Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry recently told eWEEK's Peter Galli, "I don't think Vista is as bad as Microsoft has convinced people it is."
Yeah not as bad as the press has made out, and this article just contributes to that. I'm sure MS would like to convince people how bad it is.. ehh what

My experience is that in our environment people ask for vista because they're now used to it at home.

Could Vista have missed its shot? Yes, yes, I know, how can I say this when there are tens of millions of copies of it out there? Easily. It's one thing to drop copies of Vista Home Basic and Premium on Best Buy customers who don't know any better. It's another thing entirely to get CIOs and IT managers to spend—or should I say waste?—billions on Vista.
If they're spending billions on it now they would definately have if it was a better product.

:tellme: What did you find interesting about it? Sorry if i am overly critical on eweek.

General Software Discussion / Re: What Are Your Views On BUGS?
« Last post by justice on February 04, 2008, 01:30 AM »
Its important to know as a programmer just because technically the issue is minor doesn't mean the end user impact is. Judge fixing bugs by the impact it has on the end user: for example having a contact form on a company's website not work in a particular browser is major even though it could be a few lines of javascript that need fixing. It's easy to forget about it.

If I remember correctly, iPhoto can automatically resize a photo to a reasonable format when sending it it by mail - or is the Mail application that does it when you paste / attach a photo.

Bye!
this is right, select the right photograph click on e-mail and it will ask you regarding size.

this particular script does not create an icon in the taskbar, remove the following line from the source if you want one:
#NoTrayIcon

edit: ah page 2 ;)

aye you can code it to maximize the last minimized window but it would only make sense if no window is selected.. you better look at putaside.

Take out the line SetKeyDelay 0,0 as this still triggers the minimizing if you're holding the key even with your fix..
v4 coming up  :tellme: Thanks for all the help and testing. sometimes I get too excited lol  ;)

Ah actually I'm sure I can prevent the keys to be sent to the current window ... opening helpfile..
Yeah you can but then I have to send pagedown/up afterwards which proved a hassle,
so I changed the hotkeys as follows:

2x right control = minimize
2x right shift = maximize

I needed this quickly so whipped up this AHK script to quickly minimize or maximize windows using right shift and control. I got really frustrated with the fact there is no windows shortcut to minimize the active window. If you're like me and have many window open then consider using minimIZE to minimize windows to a small desktop thumbnail (and out of your taskbar). In combination with that, this script can make windows management a lot less painlessful.

MiniMe - latest version 4 - February 1,  2008
minimize the current window when pressing right shift twice quickly. maximize the current window when pressing right control twice quickly
v4 - permanently fixed key hold issue
v3 - added jgpaiva's key repeat fix
v2 - changed hotkeys to avoid sending keys

; minimize the current window when pressing right control twice quickly
; maximize the current window when pressing right shift twice quickly
#NoEnv
SendMode Input
#NoTrayIcon
Delay = 250

~RControl up::
If (A_PriorHotkey = A_ThisHotkey and A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < Delay)
WinMinimize, A
Return
~RShift up::
If (A_PriorHotkey = A_ThisHotkey and A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < Delay)
WinMaximize, A
Return

Find And Run Robot / Suggestion: arrow keys to scroll result list
« Last post by justice on February 01, 2008, 04:47 AM »
To make farr more usable: I would like to be able to use the keyboard up and down arrow (and pagedown / pageup) to scroll through the hidden results when i query FARR and more results are shown then fit in the normal results list. That way I can quickly discover results that I didn't know about instead of relying on searching for them (which means I know about them). This would be a lot more elegant too than adding +sall to the query.

images.jpgHello we used to work with Deep Paint 2, which was released as freeware by Right Hemisphere. However without communication on the issue both download.com and RH have removed the link. Any freeware site either doesn't have the program or links to these two sites.
Which leads to the following question:

Would there be a demand for a service based on Amazon S3 which would host freeware versions of apps so that they would be available for ever without breaking the licensing terms?

But additionaly I'm looking for a replacement software for natural media. I know coral painter is the main app, and there's Artrage, I'm not going to use it with a tablet and would like the interface to be easyier rather than powerful - and Paint.net or photoshop is not what I'm looking for ;-) Would be good if it was free but not essential.

Threads I found:
Review: ArtRage 2.2 (free and full versions) - Updated with 2.5 info
Search results for 'last freeware'

Post New Requests Here / [idea] Online playlist conversion
« Last post by justice on January 31, 2008, 09:01 AM »
I'd like someone to write a small website tool, to convert .PLS files to ASX / WAX / M3U.. You'd just have one form where you'd enter the url to one of these playlists, and press CONVERT, and a serverside script would get the url and package it in the other formats. That way windows media player can open PLS files and it would probably be popular.
