Living Room / Re: The Emergency Broadcast System ?
« Last post by Renegade on October 28, 2014, 08:49 PM »
Back to EMS and the Internet...

The connection can never be guaranteed, but setting that aside, on the software side, the best solution would be a client. Whether it is push/pull would be an issue though.

To actually get reliability, you'd need a hardware solution and radio waves. So, a radio receiver that could connect to the software client running under the OS and then transmit any EMS signal there. I've not heard much about the EMS being exploited, but that's still an issue for spoofed signals.

Random thought: I want a Faraday cage.

You can't have an EMS on something like the Internet as the Internet doesn't guarantee transmission.

Radio waves are more reliable. Blah. Stuff like that.

Roger Ramjet he's our friend, hero of the nation!
The only thing that's wrong with him is mental retardation!

Uh, yeah... Didn't quite remember the right words, but close enough. :P

Dunno... I really don't like the "idiot" heroes. But I did get a laugh out of Roger Ramjet.

Living Room / Re: Who is your Favourite "Doctor"?
« Last post by Renegade on October 26, 2014, 08:31 AM »
To throw an unofficial Doctor in here: Joanna Lumley (from "Curse Of Fatal Death").

Favourite companion: Leela (sexy, feisty and dumb - for the time).

Favourite villain (there can only be one): The original The Master - "You will obey me. You WILL obey me. You WILL obey ME."

Favourite official doctor: Troughton, followed by Smith and McCoy, then Hartnell.

Least favourite: Colin Baker, then Davison.

Of the "modern" era: Ecclestone was okay; Tennant started good but the stories descended into the maudlin (his farewell, in particular); Smith re-injected zanieness(?); and I have high hopes for Capaldi.

I've been watching since the start, by the way. We are all children of our time.

Excellent round-up & commentary.

But, as for Leela... I must agree. I really liked her. But I wouldn't say "dumb" there. She had a history, and did very well for it.

And +1 for children of our time. I grew up with Pertwee then Baker, and loved them both. But, we do have our favourites. :)

And people call me a douche or cheap ass for using ad blocking software. Pfft. Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I run it and never click on ads. Sorry, but if you're not vetting your advertisers, I ain't clicking. There's a long road ahead before a decent solution to this problem is created. Actually solving the problem isn't that hard... rolling it out is near impossible.

You might like trip discs. They're fun. But you need to get really, really, seriously high to fully enjoy them. But, then again, when you're that high, just about anything will do. Still, trip discs are fun. Here's a link:

http://www.tron-sect...?a=top&id=406578

Has a few funky pics of a trip disc.

You can get them on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.u...;hash=item2ec82a69ce

Not sure where to get the pot though. I don't toke (anymore), so...

I'd imagine mushrooms would do the trick there though. But heck, with shrooms, everything is a hologram anyways, so no need for the trip discs! :P

Anyone ever watch "American Horror"? It's darn good.

I'm considering writing a new TV show called "Canadian Horror". Here's what I have so far:

Yeah, it's a lot of fun!

I'm sure she'll do an eggsellent job.

I disagree. She seems to be one of those hunt-and-peck typists.

Well, she does look handicapable. Perhaps whoever hired her was chicken about a lawsuit?

Back to auto-pilot cars...

http://time.com/3517...0/end-human-driving/

Let’s Fix It: Let’s End Human Driving

My prediction is that it doesn't end well...

If it were just purely the technology as a tool, I'd be cheering. But it's not. The IoT will ensure it turns into a dystopian, hellish nightmare. And not that the IoT itself is bad - same deal there - just a tool - but I think more than a couple people here know the sinister side of computer control -- the people behind the scenes.

Again - cool technology - but serious doubts about how it will actually be used/abused.

Not available for the anti-social among us, ie. requires Twitter, Facebook accounts to get it.

Hmm... anti-social? I can see from your new avatar... Which watchlists are you on? ;D

(BTW - I love the new avatar!  Very cute!)

Hmm... That's the exact drive I have. Thanks for the heads up. I'm kind of surprised that I didn't find out before though. A an awful lot of that stuff actually goes across my desk and I didn't get that one.

Pfft! Everything else has gone to the dogs, so why not the SCOTUS? ;D

I pity the assistant... I can just see the assistant quacking up under the stress. Also, I might have pecked a different court stenographer, but so far so good. I'm sure she'll do an eggsellent job.

Meh... Different strokes for different folks.

Not everyone enjoys the same things. And that's ok.

Here's a fun sci-fi movie that some will love, and others will hate. I rather enjoyed it. But I like to suspend everything and just take it for what it is.

Earth to Echo

1146
Ok, this is a bit long, but I **PROMISE** it is **SOOOOOOOOOOOO** worth it. Read the whole thing. It's not all that long, but not 25 words either.

The UK is a wonderful utopia of the most sensitive and caring people. Heck, if want to publish an autobiography (where nobody disputes any facts), and it could potentially, possibly hurt even just 1 person's feelings, well, you don't get to publish.

Now, try and name just 1 other country where people care so much. (North Korea doesn't count.)

Living Room / Re: Who is your Favourite "Doctor"?

For me, though, my favorite doctor is David Tennant.

It's almost impossible to pick 1. I've not seen a Doctor that I didn't like.

Nobody has voted for Matt Smith or Peter Davidson, but I really liked them as well.

If you like sci-fi, I think you'll really enjoy this.

Here's the IMDB summary:

A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

Ignore it. This is way better than that. But don't peek... I think you'll enjoy this going in blind.

MINOR SPOILER - MENTIONING A FILM SIMILAR IN SOME WAYS
If you enjoyed "Unbreakable", check this. There's one other film that I'm not remembering the name for at the moment... will post back in here if I remember...

MAJOR SPOILER IN 1 WORD
Apotheosis.

It was a very enjoyable film.

Hey, look on the bright side. Australia and the UK are definitely leading the US in criminalising speech and thought. Though only the UK has had the strength of vision and fortitude to suggest re-education camps... so far.
