General Software Discussion / Re: "Word" liscence query
« Last post by tomos on December 29, 2006, 11:11 AM »
no, it was a copy -
but they had one liscence for, I dunno, maybe 25 computers ...

I guess when i think about it the liscence would be in their name & probably for use on copmuters also in their name.. so I'll forget about it & continue the search for a sub.

loads of good stuff there  :)

General Software Discussion / "Word" liscence query
« Last post by tomos on December 29, 2006, 08:48 AM »
I use word processers very little (is that even what the're called?  :D )

I'm giving up on Open office - probably mainly cause I use it very little - it's starting it is such a pain !! but also its been pretty buggy for me & considering how little i use it I dont want to be spending lots of time trying to sort out stuff ...

I was given a copy of MS office years ago (it would suit my current requirements fine) by a company I was working for at the time (as selfemployed)
I always presumed as such it would be an illegal copy, hence I eventually got rid of it & moved on to various free/open source*

I'm now wondering if it really is an illegal copy.
Is there a way I can check without actually installing it - it would be a pain just to have to uninstall it again (I remember having major problems trying to uninstall some version of office..)
I do have the serial number

anyone got any tips?
thanks, tom

*the best one I've found so far (not free, but very reasonable) is Polyedit but it doesnt seem to have a page layout view so youve no idea where your pages begin/end. (I just posted a query at their forum)
Abi Word seems to have a lot of trouble opening Word docs - layout changes all the time (maybe I can change the margins of the default document .. will go look)
I know Zaine raves about some word/excel replacement for around $80 I think, which sounds great - but when you literally hardly ever use the thing its MONEY!

I used live around the corner from a market where you could order a bike of your choice -
& they would have it for you within the hour - while I was then less upstanding than i am now, that was just taking things too far ..

Re locks - i dont think theres any that hold out for long - it's a bit like virus & antivirus etc.

Farmsteader, i look forward to seeing that gate. the design is very impressive.
+1

Yes I'll go for it - its something I've been working on a while but I've run into technical difficulties so it could very easily get dropped by the wayside -
but:

I will create (an impressive) PDF version of my CV (with work samples etc) in January

(even if I never go looking for a godamn job..  ;D
what was that English show, nudone you prob know -
gissa job - I can do that, gissa job [ad infinitum])

Tell my business associate how much I appreciate the work he/she did on the ______ project.
and
I'd like to tell YOU how much I appreciate the work you're doing on this project   :D

credits!

PS. it being Christmas I'm going to ignore that deadline of Dec 31st - you could consider adding a week onto that? - although if people do stuff they tend to do it in their own time anyway (or is that just me  :)  )
regards,
tom

I'm using

Agenda at once - looking forward to a new version

Index cards combined with notice board for displaying cards notes etc.
(Alpha stage for the board!)

Still use App's Instant Boss

Surfulater - mainly for soft/hard-ware related stuff & Getting Organised stuff

An A5 journal for keeping track of me  :D

Even though I love ToDoList I'm using it very little at the moment but do have some ideas where it might be helpful (the Calender approach took over)

ClipboardHelp&Spell for temp storage of text-stuff (should go tidy it up ..)

Various trays & lever-arch folders (Intray unfortunately never seems to get emptied - but I go through it everyday ..)

I installed Freemind - (open-source mind-mapping software - couldnt get the Beta to work so went for the last) but havent used it yet much - also nothing to compare it with, but it seems good.

Calendar
Agenda at once, but it's losing importance
-urlwolf
I'm curious, has it been replaced for you by ToDoList & QuickNote ?

11135
there is always dB'S TitleLog
which keeps track of everything you do  :o   and, with Opera at any rate, shows the website address.
(Only shows to the nearest minute though)

see post #5 here for my TitleLog Log showing opera pages

LClock looks very nice but it looks like you can only show the time, not time & date ??
I'd miss the date - never know what it is  :)

Theres a link from there to a light version of TClock but very little info there too
Might just have to try one out ..

I haven't noticed any fading when I user "Canon Photo Paper Pro" (that's from my last two printers - the previous one was an S520 which is still being used by a friend).

Carol, you're using canon inks ?

photopaper recommendations !
I still have an i560 (but its giving up on me..)
but with the original canon inks & "Canon Photo Paper Pro" I got terrible fading  - in fairness that was with print regularly in direct sunlight. That was over 2 years ago now, I think the inks have improved since then.

A paper that is highly recommended for canon is Ilford Galerie - Classic Pearl (slow drying - very long life from a fading point of view & gives a slightly "richer" print, but easily damaged by humidity/moisture - even from handling), or Smooth Pearl ("instant" drying - more quivalent to the Canon Pro paper)
I can get them cheaper than the canon papers (here in germany at any rate)

Renegade -

from the Scribus site:
A great deal of time and effort has been put into Scribus to generate very high quality commercial grade PDF. Provided you follow the recommended workflow in the documentation, you should have few issues* with commercial printing.

but also:
This is beta software which is undergoing many code changes daily. While it is fairly stable and usable, caution is advised. It is not recommended yet for production use. The underlying file format is undergoing rapid changes and will not be finished until the 1.3.4 or 1.3.5 version is released.

I just downloaded 1.3.3.8 so hopefully "1.3.4 or 1.3.5" will be here soon.
*But as you say yourself, "few issues" could be a few too many  :)

Yeah,
it's a strange article,
in a very strange place ...

I've heard that, in the States they use a lot of hormone-treatment on animals.
It's banned in Ireland & I think here in Europe (mind you people were & probably still are regularly arrested in Ireland for possession of various illegal "growth-enhancers" - "Angel Dust" is a particularly famous one)

On the other hand it would be nice to know the "truth" about soy ...  :)

I like Opera a lot because it's ultra-customizable, but its tab behavior — which is just like IE7's — is batty.
how do you mean, Zaine ?

Scribus looks really interesting - nice find. It reminds me rather of PageMaker before Adobe bought out Aldus. It is still a bit rough around the edges too - I noticed text handling was a bit iffy (eg. if you change the font size it doesn't change the line spacing automatically so everything ends up overlapping or overspaced)
The tutorial does emphasize using text Styles which I guess would get around -
if you change the font size it doesn't change the line spacing automatically so everything ends up overlapping or overspaced
-Carol
but i can see you'ld prefer it just "worked"

Freehand, which i use, is also usable for page layout but it's not it's main function so its not so intuitive (again, i havent looked at that aspect of it much)
not exactly the same problem but related:
I'm using Freehand(9) for a layout project at the moment (my CV actually :-\ )
I find I'm not able to change the font size within a text block - Scratch that - I'm only able to change the font size by using styles - which I can see would be okay if youre doing the layout for a book or something but for something just a couple of pages long where you want a lot of variation, its a pain.

I wonder if this standard behaviour for a layout programme ...
I've started this in Freehand now so i stick with it but will try Scribus again soon to see how that works in that regard

Best E-mail Client / changing email client - old mail goes?
« Last post by tomos on December 07, 2006, 02:41 AM »
I downloaded DreamMail the other day, installed it yesterday.
Seems much nicer than Thunderbird (the only email client I've ever used !)

But I've realised two things -
1) I dont seem to be able to export my mail from Tbird/ import Tbird mail to DreamMail
2) it doesnt seem to be possible to export my mail from DreamMail

Am I missing something here (often the case  :D  but here too .. ?? )

Bit of a catch 22 if thats how it is.

Not happy with current, & cant take my mail with me
&
dont want to change to a client that I cant change from (that make sense?)

What do other people do in this situation - multiple choice:
A) find a client that can export ?
or
b) pray youre gonna love that new programme for ever
or
C) give up to a certain extent on all your old mail & make a fresh start (possible - not a bad idea actually but could be messy too - two programmes with mail to search if looking for something)

I remember reading in some thread Carol saying that she backed up mail by the year, december now ...

Well, now I have used some better words for searching...- so just forget this thread  :-[

I am trying a free program called M8

don't forget it ! (the thread  :) )
let us know how you find M8

I use clipHelp&Spell but also sometimes need something for images.
In the last clifnotes newsletter -
http://freewarewiki....otesNewsletter061203
there was a reccomendation for M8 - I got confused here cause I've downed it & its called FreeClip.exe (havent installed it yet)

Anyways, a "report" would be great !
thanks, tom
