General Software Discussion / Re: Help me understand Virtual Machine [VMWare]
« Last post by mouser on August 17, 2012, 09:55 AM »
I stand corrected regarding VmWare Player.  From the web, regarding VmWare Player:

In the latest version it can both create and edit virtual machines while it earlier could only possible to run pre-built VMs.

It used to be that VmWare Player could not be used to create virtual machines, only run those created by others.  But it seems the new version can create them too -- that's very cool.

VmWare *Player* is not what you want;  You need the VmWare "Workstation" tool (not free), or one of the free alternative virtual machine tools, like VirtualBox.

Although I use VmWare myself, seeing as how you are just experimenting, VirtualBox seems the better route than buying VmWare Workstation.

1) I suspect ideally an empty partition would be good for the virtual machine(s) - but dont know.

no.  these tools create everything they need in normal files.  so when you run the program and create a new virtual machine, it will create a very large file (it could grow to be several gigabytes in size) that will simulate the hard drive of the virtual computer.  Everything is stored in normal files.

3) if yes to #2: can it create virtual partitions on the virtual drive?

yes; it is basically going to simulate everything -- a partitionable hard drive, a bios, EVERYTHING.  it's really quite remarkable.

4) if yes to #3: can files on virtual partitions be accessed from outside the virtual OS?
5) within the virtual OS, will I be able to access and modify files from the "real" machine i.e. outside of the virtual machine

the answer is that you can access files in both directions -- but not without some work.  different virtual machine software handle this differently.  for vmware, if you are using windows operating system as your host (real) pc and simulated pc, it will install special utilities to let you drag and drop files; if you are using linux it's more complicated.

to clarify, if you pass the -printpreivew commandline option in addition to the -print option, you will get the print preview dialog prior to printing; there you will find a Setup Printer button to change the target printer from the default.

ah, czb pack is somewhat unusual, it has its own system of showing it's sub-plugins.  more info on it here: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=17153.0

you type "fssc" to list the subplugins of czb pack.

It's not by design and i thought it was fixed, but i will check again.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to change configuration files location
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2012, 12:26 PM »
Yep!
Just edit the configdir.ini file in your Find and Run Robot program file folder, and you can set the directory used for storing configuration files to anything you want.

It sounds like you are doing things right.. can you tell me what Operating System you have, and give me the path to your plugins folder?

You can email me directly if you prefer ([email protected]).

Living Room / Re: Windows 8: Yes, it's that bad
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2012, 03:16 AM »
I suppose it's true that for all the hand-wringing, it's possible that Microsoft could in fact pave the way (if not with Windows 8 then with Windows 9), for the unification of the desktop-touch worlds, giving us the best of both under a single platform, saving us from a future where tablet touch interfaces are all there is.

..nor will they want to take the time to bypass the Metro screen every time they logon.

*IF* it turns out that the only thing you have to do in windows 8 to get back to a normal desktop is click something after it boots, after which you have a full desktop experience and never have to deal with metro stuff, and there are no larger consequences, then this whole dust-up is yet another ginned-up silly exercise in complaining about the most trivial of inconveniences, and everyone is getting the knickers twisted for absolutely no reason at all.

However, that is a big giant "IF", because it seems to me that having two kinds of interfaces (metro touch-centric vs desktop) is going to be a schizophrenic situation for developers and microsoft itself, and it's hard for me to envision their not being serious consequences for this approach -- like splitting the windows developers into first and second class citizens with the new microsoft app store stuff, etc. Or requiring users to shift between different modes of using their computer based on what application they are using -- creating a daily conflict of user interface standards.  We shall see..

Thanks for posting that link -- sounds like the author had some of the same feelings I had trying it:

"From the user's standpoint, Windows 8 is a failure -- an awkward mishmash that pulls the user in two directions at once. Users attracted to the new touch-friendly Metro GUI will dislike the old touch-hostile desktop underneath. By the same token, users who rely on the traditional Windows desktop will dislike having to navigate Metro to find settings and apps they intuitively locate in Windows 7."

(ps. i changed your topic title)

All of our wishes and prayers and hopes are with you and your wife, Y0himba.  She is lucky to have someone so caring with her in this time.  I have friends with horror stories from hospitals -- it's good you've learned to be skeptical and watch over any treatment like a hawk.  Please get better soon mrs. I was just making a joke about the "Dragon Nest" game you mentioned :)

In all seriousness, does the error actually say "ptgui internal error - please report", and only display when you have the process tamer Graphical User Interface (configuration dialog) showing?

The fibre-optic output ties to a Samsung sound bar with sub-woofer that I bought.

I'm not sure what your "sound bar" is, but a good solution would be to buy a proper Receiver, which would have outputs for your speakers and outputs you could connect to the wireless broadcaster.

Your sound bar will either have inputs that will allow it to be used as a center speaker for the receiver, or else you would need to buy a new center speaker and return the sound bar.

what about using the MINICAP commandline option:
-printpreview

that should present a print preview dialog and let user choose printer.
