Living Room / Re: Looking for Beta Testers for Satanic Music Detector :)
« Last post by Renegade on November 23, 2007, 08:50 PM »

But before I could investigate further, it crashed with an "Unhandled exception error". :-(

Yuck... Could you send me the error message or a screenshot? Was it just playing and then died? Was it near the beginning or end of the song?

You can email it to "Jesus" at the domain name. :)

I'm not sure why that would happen.

Pretty cool idea & execution.  A coupla small buglets:

1. The blue open/play/pause buttons appear to take two clicks on my system to respond.  The 1st click seems to set focus; the 2nd triggers the event.

Hmmm... I'll check on that again...

2. During extended use, the waveform graphy thing would sometimes turn into a big white box (placeholder?) with a red "x" in it.  Shutting down the app and restarting fixes it (for awhile).

Strange... I think this might be related to garbage collection... I've seen this kind of thing in while I was creating the Anti-Christ Hunter, but not with the Satanic Music Detector, so I've got an idea of what may be happening.

Can you tell me how long you were using it? Has it happened more than once?

Some suggestions:

1. Display the file name somewhere on-screen, since I frequently forget which file I'm testing.  If it's an mp3, maybe (some of) the tag information too.

Right now it only shows up in the status bar in the lower left. A more complete info area might be a good idea.

2. Drag-n-drop files into the app.

This and keyboard shortcuts is on the TODO list. I've skipped doing it for now to get the other basics done.

3. Add a "Notes" box down below for quick annotation of findings while a file is scanned for Satantic influence.  It would be a bonus if, when clicking in the proposed Notes field it automatically inserted the time index (where the playback cursor is).  A REALLY nice-to-have once the Notes box is functional would be to allow the user to click a note and have the playback jump to that time index for further review.

I'll need to rethink the current UI to get this in there nicely. It wouldn't be that hard to do though. Perhaps using the "Start" and "End" markers would work there and then save the audio output as well?

Overall it's sinfully sexy to play with.  I feel almost dirty doing the Lord's work using tools like this!

:D

Well, looks like I've got a bit of work to do before this is really ready. Unfortuneately that takes time, which I'm painfully short of. I'll try to get the things above fixed in the meantime, but if you could give me any of that additional information, I'd appreciate it.

At the very end of the song where they say "he died of a stroke when he tried to eat the book...of kings, eat the book..of kings, eat the book...of kings"

that comes out backwards as "(garble) Look at me. (garble) Look at me. (garble) Look at me. Is that him lurchin'?"

You are so totally right there! "Is that him lurchin'" is crystal clear!

The Bastard Fairies - We're All Going to Hell (they used to let you download this song)

At the very end of the song where they say "he died of a stroke when he tried to eat the book...of kings, eat the book..of kings, eat the book...of kings"

that comes out backwards as "(garble) Look at me. (garble) Look at me. (garble) Look at me. Is that him lurchin'?"

 ;D

Hahahaha~! We're all going to hell! I love it! The song was hilarious! You can also get the whole album for FREE here!

bug:
It did get stuck at one point and the app stopped responding when I was toggling the "switch playback direction" button.  :(

Grrr... Looks like I have some bugs to send to Hell...

I'll check it out and see if I can reproduce it. It was looking fairly stable - can you let me know any details about your computer? OS - RAM - CPU. If you were zoomed and which direction you were going at the time?

Ah! My Bastard Fairies album download is complete! Time to check that out now! :D

(I f*^&ing LOVE that - it's just way too funny!)

Hello All,

I'm looking for people to help beta test the new Fuck Satan Satanic Music Detector. :D

Satanic-Music-Detector-v666.png

Your reward shall be a "Get out of Hell FREE!" card! (Redeemable upon eternal damnation!)

Here's the download link:

 http://www.fucksatan...nicMusicDetector.zip

There are no web pages for it yet. I'll work on those when I have time, but I'd like to get a few more good examples of Satanic music first (see below). ;)

It's for finding backwards messages in music. But you probably figured that one out by now...

It requires .NET 2.0. I don't want to say much more though as I don't want to put any ideas in anyone's head. (There's no help yet. I want to know if it's easy enough in the UI.)

The basic things I'm looking to find out are:

* Is it easy enough or intuitive enough?
* Are there any bugs (I'm sure there are a couple left in there somewhere.)
* Was it fun?
* How could it be more fun?
* Anything else that should be in the program?

Don't say "save the audio" - That's coming later. Right now it's just a player and not for saving audio clips. Got to have something on the TODO list, right?

These are some of the backwards messages that I've found so far:

Slayer - Jihad:
Oh Satan! I will rock!
(or Oh Say God. I will rock!)
(forward - I will watch you die again for him)

Slayer - Cult:
Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!  :-*
(forwards - 6! 6! 6!)
-- I liked that one! Evil forwards & nice backwards!  :P

Avril Lavigne - Sk8tr Boi:
Oh-oh-oh... And they say...
Are you a saint? Are you insane? (garble)
No release. No re-sane. And they say...
Are... Are you a saint? Are you insane? (garble)
No release. No re-sane.
(forwards - I'm with the Sk8tr boi.. - near the end of the song.)

Cher - All or Nothing:
And if I care for you...
(forwards that's "Who do you think you're foolin'")

Thanks in advance for anyone who's willing to risk their soul to help root out the spawn of Satan!  :D

And again, kudos out to nudone for the graphic work for FS!

« Last post by Renegade on November 23, 2007, 02:25 AM »
I sometimes go months without rebooting. I answered a week or more though. Sometimes I just reboot because it's been a few weeks and I want to "clean up" so to speak. Especially if I'm doing an interview and need to record.

...
but I'm no big fan of Apple, I think lot of their design is bollocks, that they're inherently more evil than Microsoft, and their group of zealots is on par with the lunix ones...
...

Amen!

The Apple and Linux religions are just sickening. I have an iPod and a Linux box, but they're just tools in the exact same way that my Windows boxes are tools.

The thing that really just pisses me off is listening to anti-Microsoft drivel about how they're "evil". Apple's behaviour is infinitely worse. When will people wake up to that? Steve Jobs rules with an iron fist far worse than Gates or Ballmer. Gates and Ballmer are far closer to open than Apple ever will be with Jobs at the helm.

MS is changing a lot now, and I expect that we'll see a lot more openness from them in the near future. They've released .NET code under a "read-only" license. Things are changing there, but Apple is going in the opposite direction it seems, e.g. iPhone. Well, they are opening the iPhone somewhat for developers. We'll see though.

I would like to see MS get into the fray and start bidding against Google for bandwidth then launch their own phones. They already have the deals with the carriers though - Google is in for a big challenge when they go up against AT&T and the boys though. Apple knew better than to screw with them for good reason.

And yes - I root for MS because are good to developers and everyone hates them. (If the average person is just average, then their opinions must be too. Better to go against the grain and avoid mediocrity. :) )

Ah..., when human and machine become one...

Resistence is futile!

But seriously - look at the keyboard there. It's all about, "I want THIS." It makes sense in a particular way. The point to abstract away is simplicity and instant access.

Quite often I find that in order to perform a task, I can either fart around learning some wierd software, or I can just program my own. I end up programming my own utility very often because it's just easier for me. Computers *should* be easier than that!

Just look at what it takes to get anything working on a Linux box! Mother of god! There's no way a regular person can do that! Windows is bad enough, and Windows is "easy".

The key to computing is dumbing it down at first glance, but leaving more powerful options available in a way that novices can get things done NOW, while more experienced users can get complex tasks done also.

Why does the average user ever need to choose between Deflate and PPMd when they try to compress a file? That's just stupid. Nobody knows or cares what PPMd is. All they care about is that they can compress the file to a nice, small size. These kinds of things need to be available to power users, but hidden from people that won't understand what they are. The picture there shows this kind of task-oriented approach that a novice or "regular person" takes.

Regarding the original post, I think Jimi had the solution...

Spoiler
Hey Joe Lyrics (Jimi Hendrix)

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe Lyrics

[1st verse [Oo-backing vocals on each line]]
Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Alright. I'm goin down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
Yeah,! I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
Huh! And that ain't too cool.

[2nd verse [Ah. -backing vocal on each line]]
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,
you shot her down.
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot you old lady down,
you shot her down to the ground. Yeah!

Yes, I did, I shot her,
you know I caught her messin' 'round,
messin' 'round town.
Uh, yes I did, I shot her
you know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town.
And I gave her the gun and I shot her!

Alright
(Ah! Hey Joe)
Shoot her one more time again, baby!
(Oo)
Yeah.
(Hey Joe!)
Ah, dig it!
(Hey)
Ah! Ah!
(Joe where you gonna go?)
Oh, alright.

[3rd verse]
Hey Joe, said now,
(Hey)
uh, where you gonna run to now, where you gonna run to?
Yeah.
(where you gonna go?)
Hey Joe, I said,
(Hey)
where you goin' to run
to now, where you, where you gonna go?
(Joe!)
Well, dig it!
I'm goin' way down south, way down south,
(Hey)
way down south to Mexico way! Alright!
(Joe)
I'm goin' way down south,
(Hey, Joe)
way down where I can be free!
(where you gonna...)
Ain't no one gonna find me babe!
(...go?)
Ain't no hangman gonna,
(Hey, Joe)
he ain't gonna put a rope around me!
(Joe where you gonna..)
You better belive it right now!
(...go?)
I gotta go now!
Hey, hey, hey Joe,
(Hey Joe)
you better run on down!
(where you gonna...)
Goodbye everybody. Ow!
(...go?)
Hey, hey Joe, what'd I say,
(Hey.......................Joe)
run on down.
(where you gonna go?)

Living Room / Re: About Rudeness in Forums
« Last post by Renegade on November 19, 2007, 05:59 PM »
The ALTools forums are really just for product support, but there are a few discussions and the like. Similarly there I have ZERO problems. Ok - not totally true. I've had one that I needed to moderate.

I'm not sure what it is, but there is just such a difference between some places. e.g. The Harmony Central forums (for music and guitars) are full of, well... Some pretty morally questionable posts that are definitely not family-friendly. Just think very off-topic and sinking a notch or two from, "I'd hit it."

The JoS forums allow anonymous posts, but even then, it's often non-anonymous posters that get snarky, so I'm not sure that anonymity has any relation to nastiness.

I voted "Never" because I've never seen anything here that even comes close to what happens elsewhere. I've see heated arguments/discussions, but not the outright, overly aggressive attacks that go on elsewhere. Disagreement is one thing, but calling someone an idiot because they have a different opinion is a bit overboard.

Got to run... Stuff to do...

I haven't installed Orcas yet as I've been waiting for VS2008 to go RTM.

But I've never had problems with VS2005 on Vista 64... Make sure that if you're consuming any 32 bit DLLs that you have your project set to x86! That took me a while to figure out as there was no clue in the error messages - things just failed. Once you've got the project set for x86, things start working as expected again.

Living Room / About Rudeness in Forums
« Last post by Renegade on November 19, 2007, 03:54 PM »
Not sure where everyone else hangs out, but I frequent a few other professional tech forums as well.

It seems like there is a lot of rudeness elsewhere, but never here. If you've ever been to JoS, you'll know what I mean.

The "How to ask questions thread" got me thinking about this again. The thing is that even when people ask questions the right way (or close enough), all too often there are people just waiting to pounce on them. That just doesn't really happen here, which is something I really enjoy. It's very refreshing to read where people help each other rather than attack.

The size of the computer doesn't matter too much - smaller is better though. The really important things are the human interface devices. i.e. Mouse, keyboard and monitor.

My IDEAL computer would be like this (total fantasy at the moment):

* Large visual display - Preferably of variable sizes for different situations, e.g. airplane vs. desk. Should unfold from a nice compact size up to between 15" and 30". Should also have an included stand/prop.

* Display is touch and laser sensitive. Touch is self-explanitory (ala the MS Surface technology). Laser is below...

* Hybrid wireless laser-pointer hover mouse - Acts like a regular mouse but includes a laser to point at the screen to control the pointer/cursor. Mouse can also be used in mid-air (hover) when you don't have a solid surface available - nice for traveling.

* Massive storage - 1 PB would be good. 4 TB would be ok for right now.

* Speed - Just plain mind-blowingly fast. You can never have enough raw power.

* Unfoldable compact wireless keyboard - Rolls out to full size. Has reinforcements to stabilize it when unfolded so it's hard like a real keyboard.

Sigh... Only a dream for the moment.

That is hilarious! I love it!

How about just getting Audrey to choose a better domain - preferably one that's not taken. :D

Or she could observe the cat for a while then give it a name. If it's clumsy, then call it "Crash". If it's a good mouser (  :o ), call it "try-catch". If it eats a lot, call it "CPU Hog" or "Resource Hog". If it tends to pee where it's not supposed to, call it "Memory Leak". :D

Oh the fun to be had with techy pet names!

I always like to root for Cowon. I hope they do well. Incidentally, their offices are across the street from me. :)

I'm still debating what to get next though. I'm sick of my iPod Nano. It really kind of sucks. Battery life is crap. Dial is very finicky and overly sensitive. Resets positions when I'm x minutes into a 1 hour podcast and not sure exactly where... iTunes sucks. Grrr... I just want something that works right and is easy to use. The iPod falls short there. I've been thinking about the new Zune, but I'll wait for more reviews. I'm in no real rush as my iPod Nano battery still lasts an astounding 2 hours and sometimes even as much as 2.5 hours on a full charge!  :-\

Desktop. Desktop. Desktop. Desktop. Desktop. Those are the primary computers that I use. I have a laptop. It sucks. Gothic went over the reasons.

I just can't stand fiddling with the trackpad. That kind of motion with your finger is supposed to be done to please a woman, not move a cursor.

Also, the mini-keyboards on laptops are just to tight. Tight again should be associated with, well, see above. It shouldn't be associated with a keyboard.

I suppose that my thoughts on using a laptop can be summed up by keeping with the same word you'd think of for this post, but not the same thing... FUCK!

I'm incredibly impatient with computers. They're supposed to be fast - human interface devices included.
