Living Room / Re: Whats on your desktop?
« Last post by Darwin on September 06, 2009, 11:43 AM »
Here's my desktop - I have a 15.4" notebook and a 19" secondary monitor running:

I'm still loathe to use icons directly on the desktop (silly, really) as I rely instead on TrueLaunchBar...

@Curt:
You forgot ArsClip, CHS, CLCL, ClipCache and MiniCLIP :)

ClipCache is right there in the screenshot  :P

Thank you, thank you, thank you  :-* I'd given up on finding a 64-bit replacement for Unlocker and *just* discovered this thread. Off to download and test now  8)

Couldn't agree more, cyberdiva. ClipMate is definitely "can't do without software". Of course, there is also mouser's Clipboard Help+Spell. If  wasn't using ClipMate before I'd heard of Donationcoder, that's what I'd be using.

Forget it, f0dder-man - I got off my butt and installed it myself! So far, it's pretty good. Minimal CPU impact (NO CPU impact, really) and working set memory use is 44MB when idle and 59MB when "switching". This is under Vista 64-bit with 4GB RAM, a T9300 Core 2 Duo Core and with 512MB dedicated video memory.

PS just to note that memory use falls off/rises with the number of windows that you have open. I'm down to three windows (versus the five I had open earlier) and memory use has fallen off accordingly: 30MB idle and 42MB when "switching". Now I'm monitoring whether or not this creeps up over time. I'll report back in a few hours!

General Software Discussion / Re: Add tabbed documents to MS Office
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2009, 09:56 AM »
Update - I really don't know what is going on: the uninstaller still showed up in "Programs and Features" (Add/Remove programs under Vista) and the settings dialog worked just fine from the start menu folder for Office Tabs 1.21 (my claim that it had disappeared "without a trace" was a bit OTT). I re-ran the installer and all is well. I'll be monitoring this, though.

Well... sad to report that after a while this add-in simply disappeared off my machine without a trace  :( This occurred without a reboot! Very weird. Right, off to investigate. I'm not sure how far I'll get with this, but will post back if I get anywhere.

Thanks for reviving this thread, f0dder. I'm interested, but am wondering about the resource "hit" under Vista?

Re: Paperport 12 Pro, here's the first review that I've seen (from AppScout): http://www.appscout....rt_12_pdf_organi.php.

It doesn't specifically state, but implies, that Office 2007 files are now shown as thumbnails.

I'm running Vista 64-bit and have yet to see the memory leak (system has been running for over a week without a restart, though it does sleep at night). I am noticing an odd inconsistency inwhich the title bar buttons (and context menu, sadly) appear/disappear in certain programs. However, as tranglos notes, this affects apps that also add buttons to the title bar (DOpus 9, for example), so I'm living with it.

In sum, version 5.4 is exceedingly well behaved on my system and uses about a third the resources that UltraMon does.

These gatherings aren't once a year -- they are whenever a dc person is nearby and wants to come over.
Actually we've been thinking that we might have game night every week or every other week, so anytime a dc person is in the area will work out fine.

Well... I'll try for next summer, then! I should be in Toronto next July-ish and might try to drive down.

Peripherally, if anyone wants to organize something on the West Coast I'd make an effort to attend. I'd organize something myself but Courtenay, population 22,000, is a bit out of the way!

EDIT: fixed wonky quote...

Thanks for the link, Gothi[c] - I'll have to try this

Mouser - I'm sorry I missed the DC-IRLDD. Maybe next year!

I'm very late to this thread (didn't really get near a computer/DC all summer), but just wanted to give rjbull my condolences on the loss of his mother and his job. Went through redundancy myself 18 months ago and can sympathize.

Thanks for the heads up on this one, CWuestefeld  I noticed the ghacks posting about this but didn't pay much attention; I'm glad you drew our attention to it! I've missed this funcitonality since I moved to Office 2007/Vista 64-bit (from Office 2003/XP 32-bit) as that move rendered a number of add-ins I used to do this inoperable  ;D

Thanks for organizing the discount, Carl (and thanks to Alex as well!) - I'm evaluating AWM 5.4 now against UltraMon on a Vista x64 system. Very nice! It's more feature rich and yet has a smaller footprint.

Heh, heh - they called while I was out so I am now awaiting a second call. I might just buy another license through your other vendor and give my wife the Plimus generated code when it arrives - she currently relies on Outlook's built-in Junk Mail filters.

EDIT: except that Plimus is the only vendor for the non-Bat! versions. C'est la vie...

BTW - I'm very impressed with AntiSpam Sniper  I bought it because SpamBayes has gotten increasingly flaky under Vista-64/Outlook 2007 (to the point where I have to uninstall/reinstall it every time I re-start my computer) and ran the trial - it captured spam messages that I NEVER managed to convince SpamBayes were spam. These are messages that my isp inserts (Telus detected SPAM) at the beginning of the subject. I've been flagging them as spam for years with SpamBayes and it never learns. Other than that, it's been brilliant! At any rate, I digress: Antispam Sniper is a fine bit of code indeed! Thanks, Vitaly and Innuendo

Thanks, Vitaly! I went ahead and purchased the Outlook license as well... However, Plimus is "reviewing" my order - I suspect because I used the same credit card for a second purchase quite soon after the first (?).

Just to note - I used the discount code successfully to purchase a license for the Bat! version but the code was refused for the Outlook version...  :( :(
