Hi Jamey - welcome to DC and good luck with those exams! I went to two uni's in the UK (and one in Canada) - make the most of the next few years - no matter where you go, you only get out of the experience what you put into it...  ;)

Haha thanks for the luck =] I'm really looking forward to uni, all dependant on the grades though.

Greetings all, I am Laz.  I live in the US, in the SouthWest part of Virginia.  I am a CTO for my day job, where I worked my way up from a UNIX and Storage sysadmin. I have been working with computers and related stuff for over 20 years and I love it all.

As for software development, I am a self taught programmer and scripter.  People tell me I am sick in the head because I code for fun.  I can spend a day working on a code project and have a ball.  Primarily, I am a Visual Basic guy for Windows software, but I have dabbled with lots of other languages too, including some C++ when I worked on Half-Life mods a while back.  I also do loads of web development and love PHP for that, plus lots of PERL and Bash/shell for UNIX/Linux scripting.  I enjoy working with databases as well, and use MySQL, MS SQL and SQLite quite a bit.

I like what I see here at DC, and I am very happy to be a member here.  I have been writing and giving away little apps and utilities for years, and I love what everyone is doing here.  I look forward to getting to know folks here and tinkering on some good software!

Thanks

Welcome to the site sunlitlaz, glad to have you!

ps. Make sure you don't miss our NANY event in december, sounds like something you would enjoy.  Here's last years description.  This goes for anyone else reading this as well -- NANY 2010 is only a few months away!

Cool, NANY sounds like a fun thing to participate in!  One question, I want to make sure I get it right, does the app have to be developed between (for example) Dec 1 - Dec 31?  or just released by Jan 1?

has to be released to the public for the first time around jan 1.
so it CAN be something you've worked on for a long time up until then, as long as it hasn't been available to the public previously.

in the spirit of NANY, it should be something youve worked on at least a little bit recently.. so just grabbing something you wrote 10 years ago and not even updating it a little for NANY would be pushing the terms of the celebration.

Cool.  I wouldn't just grab something from 10 years ago LOL (yikes!)  But I have a couple of ideas and wasn't sure if I could get one of them cranked out in 30 days.

Thanks!

Hi mouser,

You wanted to know where my nickname 'awopbamboo' can from, well, its nothing exciting.  A freind of mine 'beebopalula', and I carried that on with 'awopbamboo'.  It's probably not even spelt right, but its quite unique so handy for joining forums etc!

As I'm a newbie, with regard to who I am etc.
Name: Jamie
What I do: IT Consultant (whatever that is)
From: Basingstoke, UK.

I've been watching the forums for a while as guest, some interesting ideas pop up now and then, just didn't have the urge to 'get involved'.  But now I am.

Cheers

J.

by the way awopbamboo, this is a bit off topic but i could not more highly recommend the Do Wop Box collection of do wop songs -- some of the best stuff ever recorded.

Every time I see this thread I start singing in my head the following. Anybody else want to admit their age by saying they recongize it?

Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself
I'm A Man Of Wealth And Taste
I've Been Around For A Long, Long Year
Stole Many A Man's Soul And Faith
And I Was 'round When Jesus Christ
Had His Moment Of Doubt And Pain
Made Damn Sure That Pilate
Washed His Hands And Sealed His Fate

OK, I must be old, not only do I know that tune, I used to play it in a band I was in a few years ago.  It's a good tune all the way around  :D

Hi All,

I'm from the UK too (as per Carol above, and zriding).  From Basingstoke in Hampshire.  And for that reason, I see no point in sending a photo!

Whats the ratio roughly of where people are from on here?  I assume the majority are from the U.S?

well the people who are active in the forum are from all over really which is nice - there's no bias I find (bias = not quite the right word but does the job I think)
What the problem with Basingstoke and photos - not so nice?
If you did want to post a pic there's always the Show us the View Outside Your Window thread :)
