Hey when you plan to pursue a firefox version I'm sure you'll be well supported by this forum  I'm a fan of many altools as they tend to keep things elegant but powerful. That's always very tough.

Yeah... I told one of the guys, "Hey... Guess what? First comment on ALToolbar... what?!? no Firefox add-on?" I'd be happy sometime to explain the reasons why in person, but not here in any open forums. There are some very compelling reasons if you've got a good grip on software development, marketing, and general business. I constantly pester the guys (and girls) at work about this stuff to try and push people further, but they're doing a good job. I just take it as my job to push in certain directions...

That being said, I know that many or most people here use "alternative browsers". Myself included. At home here I'm writing in Opera because I've still got state stored that I don't want to lose (and many many tabs open), but on my primary dev. box it's IE now.

But I'll make sure to echo the FF sentiment... again... ;)

Cheers!

Not sure if this helps, but I still like the hammer option...

But seriously, check the drivers and physical ports. Try different USB ports if you can. Hard to do that for the mouse port...

(I'd run SpinRite overnight too to correct any disk errors in case there's some kind of corruption. Not sure that it would matter much, but can't hurt.)

what?!? no Firefox add-on? ;D

Nope... Sorry...  :(

At the moment I'm using Opera (right now), but that's because I'm on my Korean system and it only has IE6. I still refuse to give up tabs. But I'm using IE7 on my English box and use it there. The Mouse Gestures are simply far better than anything else I've tried, and that's my #2 criterion for a browser. (I've used another mouse gestures plugin for IE before, but it wasn't stable and the gestures were kind of random. That simply precluded my general use of IE period. Though I've always used IE for administrative things...)

I really wish that there was a Firefox version though... I know that I'm going to get a million people emailing me about it and asking for a Firefox version...

General Software Discussion / Re: Best password manager?
« Last post by Renegade on January 29, 2008, 11:00 PM »
I have been ITCHING to get back into this thread for a LONG LONG time!

(DISCLAIMER: For anyone that doesn't know, I work for ESTsoft, the company that makes the products I'm talking about here.)

Anyways... ALPASS ONLINE! I think a few people might like it or the general idea at least.

We've FINALLY managed to get the new web site online and that includes ALToolbar being released. (Still tweaks to get done in the site, but whatever -- it's up!)

In any event, I'm getting ahead of myself here...

ALPass Online is basically ALPass inside of ALToolbar. But this time around, you can store all your logins online and access them through ALToolbar from anywhere on any computer. (Windows & IE only)

So, instead of being locked downd to 1 computer with the software on it, or bothering to carry a USB drive/key around, you can simply carry around 1 password in your head to get into your logins & passwords from anywhere. A bit lighter and easier.

I know someone's going to ask about security --- SSL connections for ALToolbar, and all encryption is done client side with a shared secret so that ALToolbar can authenticate users. Basically that means that we don't have your password at any time. The downside is that since you're the only one with the password, if you lose it, all your data is lost forever as well. Encryption is ARIA 256. (Similar to AES 256. It's a block cipher.)

This is just v1.13 right now, and there's more stuff coming into ALToolbar and ALPass Online, but in any event, if you have the time and inclination, let me know what you think of it. If you want, you can post in the ALTools forums or here. I read both. ;)

But do you need such software? Most companies don't. I know organizations that are successfully running massive websites with Microsoft FrontPage. They can do this because they have excellent editors and writers, and because they have well-defined, well-policed publishing processes and policies.

Totally missing the point. Just because I can shape fecal matter and freeze it into some make-shift skiis doesn't mean that it's a good idea.

Everyone that runs a web site with more than just a couple pages should manage how the site works and organizes itself.

While he's right about the 'crapware' that so many companies pimp out to customers, he seems like he hasn't used anything that actually works. They exist. I use them.

We've just finished moving from altools.net to altools.com. That includes moving well over 10,000 pages and all the content there.

Now... Try moving 10,000 pages created with FrontPage that sit in flat files and completely redo all the design for them all. I'd shoot myself in the head if I needed to do that.

Using a CMS facilitates a future for a site. Oh bother. I'm just ranting! Shut up and go do something else Ryan! Ok. Bye.

In a commercial environment when deciding to create a web site, I would instantly fire anyone who suggested writing the web site from scratch. My reason would be that they are simply too stupid to live, reproduce, and that I was shocked that they had enough brain power to breathe. (Pet peeve of mine here...)

For a very few web sites (the Amazons of the world), you need to write from scratch with a large focus on architecture and scalability, but for 99.99999999999% of web sites out there, a CMS is THE answer.

The free ones have come so far along now that they are used by the likes of Texas Instruments, the US military, and a lot of very large web sites.

The simple act of writing a GOOD authentication system is a substantial effort. Why do that when you can get it for free from people that are better than you?

The point to the CMSes, like DNN, out there is that you have a good framework and can customize from there.

i.e. Do not reinvent the wheel! :)

ALToolbar is ESTsoft's new suite of tools to speed up and enhance Internet related tasks. Packaged as an addin for Internet Explorer, it runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista, x86 and x64 editions.

ALToolbar.png

The suite of tools in ALToolbar enhances and improves how people do common Internet tasks, including search, login and navigate. ALToolbar also lets people maintain privacy, increase online security, and interact with web pages in faster and easier ways.

Box_Toy_ALToolbar.png

While meeting the traditional ALTools standard of powerful simplicity, some of the more convenient and powerful features are easily learned in one or two minutes. The strong emphasis on usability extends past simply running inside the browser though; it brings users into the cloud where they can keep and access important information from anywhere online.

The core of its faster search and navigation are ALToolbar Search Bar and ALToolbar's Mouse Gestures. Combined, these tools easily cut down the time needed to search/navigate by half and usually much more. Moreover, learning how to speed up Internet usage with ALToolbar is accomplished in less time than it takes to load Windows.

Notably, ESTsoft has rolled ALPass, their popular password manager, into ALToolbar as "ALPass Online". People can now securely save and access all their web site logins online from anywhere. ALPass Online also includes anti-phishing protection for registered web sites to help protect people from login and identity theft.

Security in ALToolbar (and for ALPass Online) uses SSL and ARIA 256 strong encryption with a shared secret to ensure that only the user ever knows their password. Consequently, passwords cannot be retrieved, but can be reset at the cost of losing all ALPass Online and Online Bookmarks data.

Other tools in ALToolbar let people keep Internet Explorer running smoothly and cleanly to maintain privacy, save and synchronize bookmarks, capture full web page screenshots, block annoying Flash ads, re-enable right-click menus, and a Find bar that sits at the top of the browser window instead of floating aimlessly in the middle of the page.

The Korean and Japanese (due out shortly) versions of ALToolbar include an in-page English-Korean/Japanese dictionary with audio pronunciation guide. And while not available in the English version yet, the Korean version includes a small online disk to quickly save files so that they can be accessed from anywhere, like a virtual USB flash drive.

Like all ALTools, ALToolbar is available for free at www.altools.com.

To start on a tangent, often when discussing performing a task, people use what they know and not necessarily the right tool. The common expression associated with this is, "when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

Well, the point is that your mouse is the nail. Now go get yourself a hammer! :D

Then go get a ball mouse. After all...

Pretty much every time I hear about a serious exploit, I find that I get a lot more spam very shortly thereafter:

Reference (Jan. 10, 2008):

STEVE:  Okay.  Now, okay.  The takeaway message is absolutely everyone needs to run Windows Update.  Last Tuesday was the second Tuesday of the year.  Since the first Tuesday, of course, was January 1st, it was January 8 was the so-called "Patch Tuesday," when Microsoft releases their security updates.  This week we had a doozy.  It turns out that private parties informed Microsoft of a very low-level buffer overflow which permits remote code execution in the Windows TCP/IP stack itself.  So, and this is...

LEO:  Oh, is it the new stack that they wrote, or is this the old stack?

STEVE:  Well, this is XP's stack.  And it's believed that there is a problem in Windows 2000 as well.  So this has been around for a long time.  What makes this specifically bad is this is down - it's in what's called the IGMP, the Internet Group Management Protocol.  That's a multicast protocol.  And but the point is, this is not like a service running with an open port where the service has the problem.  This is the core of the stack itself.

what TCP/IP stack problem?

I heard about an exploit for the Windows 2000/XP TCP/IP stack (Security Now). Vista is supposed to be vulnerable as well as it shares the same code.

My German isn't exactly, well... not exactly anything... ;)

"Downfall" sounds good to me. (I do love the sound of German though. Some languages aren't nice to listen to, but I find German very nice.)

Ok -- the timing for this is just too much...

There has to be a million new zombies out there thanks to that TCP/IP stack problem. :(

Hello Carol,

Just a few suggestions, but try the ASP, AISIP, OISV and JoS. There are lots of very helpful people there.

For Visual Studio, try www.learnvisualstudio.net. Good site, but sometimes a bit easy. I bought the $99 lifetime membership, but haven't used it enough so far. I won't complain though. $100 is nothing to pay for the right information to get you going. It will make you 10x times that easily in a short period.

I think those are a few good places to start.

Don't forget about the MSDN forums too.

I hope that helps.

Very cool game. Easy is a bit too easy. Normal is ok. But I've got too much running for the hard level. It's just not responsive enough on this box without shutting things down. I'll try again later though.

Good find!

In case anyone's interested, just a little background on the "killed in action" ad.  World Peaceways was an anti-war pacifist organization between WWI and WWII.  Here's the text from the ad:
...snip...

That ad (from my own eyes) could easily be used today. The issue is eternal and won't go away for a long time. Replace the graphic and modernize the font... Pretty much done at that point.

However, what you posted for the ad and the text there seem to be a bit different. There's a reference in the graphic to "1914-1918", but not in what you had. Perhaps there were different versions of it?

In any event, that one I certainly wouldn't paint as "crazy". Perhaps a vivid reflection of the time, but certainly not a crazy ad by any means. Crazy would be advocating war... Oooops! We have ads like that today!  :o

Ha! Renegade, you were probably 'on target' with your first post.     After a fair bit of tedious searching I've found this:
http://www.tunequest...sts-part-2/20070219/

I'll have to give it a try tomorrow! This sounds like what I was looking for: shove it in one side and it comes out the other. Presto ... I hope   :tellme:

Interesting article.

One of the things I do in my own podcast ( http://www.dotnetpreacher.com/ ) is to cut out a LOT of dead time to shrink the time down. Nobody wants to listen to pauses or "umms" or any of that junk. It takes a lot longer to edit, but the result is just about 100% pure information with nothing to waste your time.

If you have an iPod, there is an option to speed up audio books by 25%, but it only "kind-of" works for podcasts. i.e. Some podcasts will work fine (e.g. Dot Net Rocks), and others will still be normal speed.

Actually i meant his "guitar and drum trainer": http://renegademinds...efault.aspx?tabid=65
it's kind of the opposite of what you want, can slow down songs etc.

It will speed up as well, but it's commercial software and not free. Also, it doesn't save the audio right now. It's all 'real-time-only' for slower or faster audio. I'm in the process of upgrading GDT and saving songs slowed down or speeded up is one of the new features.
