General Software Discussion / Re: Google now includes StarOffice as a free download!
« Last post by tomos on December 20, 2007, 04:29 PM »
forgot to say if I go to "Installed Software" tab & select "Recent Activity" -
it shows Star Office 8 and install date but it still doesnt show it on the "Installed Software" tab

okay, just sorted it
see
http://www.google.co...&hl=en&gl=us

1. Open the Google Updater, and select the "Preferences" tab.
2. Click "Advanced Options" if this section is hidden.
3. Check "Update all software available in the Google Pack" to keep all Google Pack software up-to-date, or un-check it to keep only Google software updated. Please note that by un-checking this box, you also turn off notifications for new third-party software.
4. Click the "Save Preferences" button.

I checked "Update all software available in the Google Pack"

Here's a link,so you don't have to fiddle with Google's Pack

http://gpdl.google.c...8.0.9189.0/setup.exe
It weighs about 143.40 MB.

I installed Star Office but dont believe I used the link in quote cause I also seem to have googleupdater installed
I know there's an update (well the programme says there is) but cant dl it directly and google updater doesnt recognise/cant find the Star Office install and I cant add it manually to google updater

not loosing any sleep :) but wondering how others who used/using google updater getting on?

Notepad Minus description
Notepad Minus - the only text editor that has less functions than the original NOTEPAD.EXE that comes with Windows
Notepad Minus is a program designed to be the only text editor that has less functions than the original NOTEPAD.EXE that comes with Windows.

It can't even save the text you wrote.

But it is small and does not require any installation  ;D ;D

can I ask before I install Brandon,
does it automatically download all the other progs or would I have a choice there too?
I'm not such a big fan of Windows Defender for example and have something equivalent already installed
(mind you I havent used it in a year or more so it may have improved..)

I notice the big "DO NOT.." on your screenshot:
would it be possible (for the benefit of people who push buttons first and read later - not me- I swear :P) to set it up so selecting one of the choices deselects the others ?

When purchasing at Ashampoo's site   europeens must remember first to change currency from euro to US-dollar   in order to save the difference  because the price is both $60 and €60   but €60 is almost $80.

damn I hate that - it's even a german company - usually it's the american ones that do that
ah well still got a bargain...

General Software Discussion / Re: NovaPDF Pro Question - Can It Do Form Filling?
« Last post by tomos on December 19, 2007, 05:11 PM »
I got an email the other day (as a Backup4all owner) "HappyHolidays" newsletter also with 30% off Nova PDF (just BTW)

I actually installed the Nova trial a while back - didnt use it much but I believe it's "simply" a pdf creator (probably a fancy one, but not for form filling)

Have you tried PDF-XChange Viewer? - the free version allows form filling but I'm not sure how versatile it is (if you move on from one field to the next, the previous one is no longer editable, still not bad for free!)

I know it was discussed on some thread here too if you search

that's amazing

it looks real, if it wasnt it would nearly be even more work anyways!

but his head keeps (impressively) the same size and position within the image - maybe he had a tripod and a whatchamacallit* to hold his head in same position/place and didnt move either for eight years

* maybe we need to make up a word for that.. :)

Agggghhhh Curt you're saving me money... just when I should be spending it on christmas presents for in-laws :-\

no, seriously, thanks for that tip Curt - I got the "Office" upgrade for €16 *

your email quote above gives the impression it only works on the 24th, but works now for any one interested

* even at €60 I reckon that office suite (from Softmaker) is a bargain

« Last post by tomos on December 19, 2007, 08:30 AM »
I kind of like the name you have for it already...except I would tweak it just a tiny bit and call it
Points to Presents.

how bout one less Points-to-Present or Point-to-Present
10191
Thanks Brandon for that -
will install when I get chance and have a look
actually maybe I'll install it on the older computer first which *really**needs* a cleanup :)

If I understand correctly you are saying that I should add some information on the maintenance/cleaning part?

I think so - it's a big part of it still, even if you want to concentrate on the other aspects.

« Last post by tomos on December 19, 2007, 03:14 AM »
even though I have all dialogs set to show in Detailed mode, many still open in the List mode, and some in Thumbnails mode. Also, About every other time I open a dialog it shows the files in reverse alpha order. Arrgggh! Is that likely to be Enhanced Dialog? Or does WinXP do that? Like, all are in alpha-ascending order when downloading something. Then the next time I download they are listed in alpha-descending!

I havent had that problem (xp home, filebox extender)
You could always try disable Enhanced Dialog see how you get on?
then maybe try filebox extender or whats that one ChalkTrauma made (found it: CFDButton) and see how you get on with them -
might help pinpoint the problem...
10193
Brandon
it's looking good
Dont want to give you a hard time but..
I wanted to find out some more details but find very little on homepage :tellme:
if someone who doesnt know at all what the programme does reads that site they will get some details
but not hardly anthing about the cleanup aspect - or maybe I've lost track of the aim/direction of the programme?

Personally I'm wondering if I install/use the "cleansing" aspects, do I have control over which ones are used or does it do a clean sweep through everything (I want to avoid regristry cleaning for example)
thanks, Tom

UrPlanner
(YourPlanner* & in german Ur = ancestral indigenous primal primary primordial prototype adj.)

UPlan

De/Da/Ze-Plan had me laughing but are they a bit too light? (or that maybe good too?)

maybe Planner make it sound too much like *just* a planner..

... ultimately resulting in "Delay Write Failures" and data corruption. Google for "firewire filter driver".

it *was* in connection with external drives that I read it and the words "data corruption" were used so maybe same problem -
it was enough to put me off at the time (never did get an external HDD enclosure anyways so...)

My biggest complaint is that there are always a number of dialogs where Enhanced Dialog never kicks in, but I believe that is because of the specific applications configuration and not Enhanced Dialog.  Do the ones you reviewed also have this issue?

with Filebox Extender, yes, that's a problem too

My latest proposition is OutBase, the outlining database/PIM.
Or Daou, the data outliner (along the lines of Zoho, Rico, IPod, etc)

I was going to suggest simplifying it to Dao (as in Tao) but it seems that's kindof taken
http://en.wikipedia....i/Data_Access_Object

I'm not a big fan of outbase on first impressions - it doesnt flow - two different broad vowels make it a mouthful to say

DBase [gone :(]

would you be against the idea of a descriptive name with "catchy" initials?
Super Flexible File Synchroniser comes to mind but a name I always a bit unsure of - SFFS on other hand I like...

or open to idea of name tha has nothing to do with what the app does - e.g. Zoho -
I guess you are open to that with Daou

just thinking out loud at this stage - will go and think quietly ;)
