General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by tomos on January 15, 2008, 01:20 PM »
As part of the GTD implementation, new quick Add Item form is now available. CTRL-N to open it. A system-wide shortcut is also available to open it from anywhere (CTRL-ALT-N): (see attachment in previous post)You can enter item text, decide into which folder to put it in (normally, the inbox) and put a due date if required

Plus... now you can show/hide an HTML box. SQLNotes can now much more easily be used as a web-clipping tool:

  • browse to a web page
  • Select some text
  • copy (right-click or CTRL-C)
  • CTRL-ALT-N (will open the above form)
  • paste (right-click or CTRL-V)
  • click Add Item (or Alt-A). An item has been created with your clipping, put in the inbox, ready for you to file it appropriately later-on
  • focus is then restored to the browser (or whereever you were before hitting the hot-key.

ehh, it works nicely ... but how do we bring up the inbox?

Attention all... I created a Wikipedia page to explain what SQLNotes is. The page is not very different from pages of numerous other software.

However for some reason (I know very little about Wikipedia rules/regulations), it has been marked as proposed for deletions in 3 days. One reason given is that only one person contributed... hence the appeal to all to add to the page. Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sqlnotes

p.s. grap a reference of what you write (and put it ironically into SQLNotes if you wish) in case the deletion is eventually done.

just had a look here,
they seem to be looking for references from other "reliable third party" source
odd in this context - why dont they just download the software to see if it exists !!

File with fonts embedded comes to 167KB

File without fonts embedded is readable except for the following

# it can handle é but not ´
# it cant handle ' a single apostrophe like would normally be used in Tom's or in some surnames e.g. O'Connor
# it cant handle euro symbol €

a very depreciating title to a software announcement but it sounds very good
disclaimer - I have it downloaded but not tried it yet :)

Funny - I actually have SoftMaker Office 2008 installed (academic licencing is a wonderful thing) and had meant to test this out myself. Of course, I've forgotten. I'll try and do so today or tomorrow and post back here with my own "experiences".

please do
there's relatively few posts at the Softmaker2008 forums yet so it would be great to know if this just me

Problems:
  • huge file size (almost 2MB for one page with the three fonts mentioned above) with "embed only embeddable.." selected
  • totally unreadable PDFs with "do not embed.." selected

@Armando:
Using MSWord as the HTML Editor is an excellent idea. Making a full featured editor is a big job which I'd like to postpone if I can. Preliminary test seem good. I can create a word document in a window and load text into it. Menus are OK too. Main thing left to fix: docked toolbars do not show.

would that mean we need to have MS office :tellme:

« Last post by tomos on January 15, 2008, 05:12 AM »
hi Maggy,
I agree, ExifPro is great!

do you use ExifPros tagging system as well?
I've tried it without great success but in fairness I havent checked it out very scientifically

also it seems to struggle a bit (here) with being made the default viewer for images.. but I am writing up a note about that for author...

Hmm... no one's mentioned it there. If you want to post in that forum, point your browser here: http://www.softmaker.com/forum/index.php. You might need to register to use the forum first...

done, posted at their forums, will update here - [it's still a problem for me...or for me and Textmaker!]

it's funny the way things can get so personal - and sometimes so quick too
i think it's often someone saying something, maybe in a tactless way, someone reacting, person one reacting to the reaction and its off into an escalating spiral thats difficult to get out of and very easy to get back into ...

ah well

General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner
« Last post by tomos on January 14, 2008, 12:14 PM »
From what i understand, you don't need a "similar images finder", all you need is a "duplicate file finder", which is included in serveral alternative file explorers (like dopus) or, alternativelly, you could use a standalone tool, like this one.

disclaimer: i've never used dupfilefinder. It does look good, though :P

would that find them if they have different names - dont think dopus would do that
would have to compare all files for same size and then do a bit comparision

I used to have one called similar images finder but I never used it :-\
so I googled -
similar images finder

one out of the first three listed is free, one has a trial, I didnt look further

if you do try any of them let us know how you get on!

is he embarrassed about what he wrote or what :tellme:
or is it a grand statement - no need to answer me there...

hmmm, it is a sad end as Carol says

Personally I wouldnt go to the trouble of restoring - unless others really think it puts them in a bad light - he did obviously decide to leave a couple of posts in which he was trying to finish up the debate which could give a skewed impression of things

I think I may have posted this in the wrong thread
I'm  pleasantly suprised by the urge to build up those points :D
thanks mouser

a minor bug:
the reward column on the "Earn Points" tab only ever shows 10points here regardless of actual amounts (which work okay otherwise)
a minor request:
could you get it to come out of the tray on one click? (please!)
oh, and option to close to tray would be good too but only as icing

I have other ideas/requests but havent looked at this xml aspect of it yet so will post again

well he mentions Opera ... [but under Firefox heading]
I'm not sure about opera cause i've personnaly done survey for this browser in many internet cafes.and the users are complaining about its stability and security.
anything I've ever read about browsers though, says that Opera is the most secure of all :tellme:
