Light on dark, of course.  You dark on lighters (hmmm... darklighters.  Where have I heard that before...) I can't figure out... the abundance of white blinds me... I severely dislike the theme for DC because of that... when I come here, I'm blinded for a few secs, LOL!

Warning... huge picture follows...

Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by wraith808 on January 09, 2008, 04:34 PM »
I'm not sure that this was answered, but I think the problem with the thread in question wasn't the original post.  It was technology related, and very much to the point.  I think it was the somewhat 'blue' discussion that followed.  Look at the trail of comments- they get worse as time goes on, to the last one which, while not explicit, will set off filters.

But I think this discussion is pretty much done, and there's another on tagging that is aimed at solving the problem...

Actually the "Porn drives technology online" argument doesn't hold water for me

You obviously are in the minority. (only a very very little bit NSFW for a word or two, should be acceptable to most)

LOL... that was exactly what I was thinking about when that statement first came up...  If I could get to youtube from my client site, I would have posted it myself!

It's also about content that may well be relevant to the site. The YouPorn post might well have been an article in an IT magazine, after all. It's a "people meet technology" issue - part computing, part sociology. It seems to me you are asking adults to refrain from discussing certain relevant topics. So what would you like to be done?

If I'm understanding correctly (and correct me if I'm not), it wasn't the article itself, which was very salient to the discussion of technology.  It was the commentary that followed that was a bit blue.

Wow.  Putting words in my mouth.

I was not defending, simply pointing out that you clicked a link by a known prankster and was surprised at what you found.

How old are you?  Are you not aware that the internet contains things you may not like?

This was pretty much a low blow IMO.  And all of us don't know the attributes of every other person around here.  I wasn't affected by said link, but if I had been (especially if I had been a client's at the time) I would have been more than a little upset.  Blind links to NSFW items are not jokes, they are potentially job/livelihood threatening traps.  Not an opinion in the least- a fact, as it's happened to me before.

Ok I'd better mention my previous post wasn't meant to be inflammatory, just to point out how seemingly sensible NSFW tags are really a stepping stone to more pervasive censorship... with an attempt at satire thrown in.

CodeTRUCKER, I like that you say this is more an issue of courtesy and consideration but doesn't that go the other way too where the more conservative (for genuine lack of a better word) tolerate the the openness of others.

Sometimes that tolerance isn't a matter of choice.  I come here for breaks when I am at work sites that are very unforgiving.  I choose this as one of the places I take breaks b/c it is safe for general consumption.  If it *is* going to be safe for that, then this needs to be said upfront.  If it isn't, that needs to be stated likewise.  I was on another forum where they specifically said the forum was NSFW, even though such conversations were few and far between.

Is this to be a family friendly and safe for work site?  Or is it to be relegated to those that you only visit on your own computer when you have time at home?

I used this before several years ago, and didn't particularly like it.  It was pretty much like a 'me too' editor in every area, and was pretty clunky in the implementation of features.  Looking at the site it looks like they've come a *long* way... I might give it another shot...

I've actually used ME for quite a while (an older version) and I do plan to upgrade.  While it is true that a lot of the features are in free versions- all of them are not, especially packaged in one product.  I've tried quite a few freeware products, and none of them match it; you have to go to a pay product to get the wealth of features in one place.

I'm at work, and just learned about it today, so can't really download to compare.  It's inevitable that I'll use it sometime that I'm making a profit, so I was just wondering if someone had used it.  Thanks for the responses!

Bits Du Jour has PhraseExpress on special at $10 today.  Has anyone used this and DA?  Are they pretty much the same thing?

Thanks!

I find IdeaMason a bit different; I guess it depends on what you're looking to do.  If I'm writing a short story, then I wouldn't use IdeaMason.  I used it during NaNoWriMo and it was invaluable; I plan to use it for further novel writing, game/game supplement writing, and writing articles.  It keeps all of my notes at hand, and allows me to write snippets and combine them together later.

I've already tried it and several others.  LSB just puts too much in the way of what I really need to do- plot and write.  It's like a multimedia organizer and doesn't have the links I need for plotting and drag-and-drop simple storyboarding and character development.  Just didn't like it.

Note: This may indeed be the reason that he was fired.  But this has not been verified by any facts.  In the beginning, news outlets were reporting it as rumour, but somewhere along the line, this has morphed into truth without any verifiable facts.

Now people are boycotting GameSpot and cancelling memberships over an unsubstantiated rumour.  My how quickly we rush to judge based on nothing more than someone's word...

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager
« Last post by wraith808 on November 19, 2007, 12:17 PM »
I personally don't see 3 out of 5 stars as a 'hate review' either; I'd give it 3 (or perhaps 3-1/2... maaaaybe 4) stars out of 5 currently, and I don't hate the software.  I just couldn't really recommend it at a level above that because of features that are must-haves for me to recommend that are not present.  For file management, DP is one of those features that I require, otherwise, I'd stick with explorer- and tabs don't change that assessment.  It's a very solid piece of software, that works very well.  But it doesn't fit in my workflow currently as a file manager.

A bit late with this, but I was already trial-ing it for preparation for NaNoWriMo and using it for my writing when I found out about the discount- I was planning to get it for 99, but for the price on BitsDuJour it was a no brainer.  I write fiction in my spare time, everything from modules for games to actual novels, and I find it perfect for that, even though I'm not using half of the features.  It really makes it easy to write stream-of-consciousness and worry about structure later, and it helps to organize bits of information and source them.  I'd heartily recommend it to any writers, but especially to students- I have a friend that's writing her dissertation using this software, and it's taken the place of several different programs that she was using for this.

Here is a gaming myth

- you need a G15 keyboard and G5 mouse to be any good in a shooter

Never heard that one before.  And I've heard a lot of gaming myths.

You've been able to do that 'rocker' function for a while in firefox with an extension.  I believe that there was also a mousing program which let you do the same thing, though its name escapes me currently.

If you already have a myspace presence, and like how it appears

I sure hope not.  MySpace pages are a web designer's nightmare...

Not as far as the layout.  But the colours and such are a valid start, and are valid no matter where you port them to.  I've actually done that for others, and been able to approximate the look and feel rather easily.  But to each his own.

1. When looking for a host, realize that you pay for what you get.  In many cases what you get is a shared server, which means your service quality depends on how much stress everyone is putting on the server.  That said, I've had very good success with servage (servage.net), so would suggest a look.

2. When designing a website, first figure out why you want a website, then what you need to make that a reality.  You might find that you don't need as much as you thought.  I design custom websites also, but I do it on the side, just to build up a portfolio, so its been more important to have stable clients than to make a lot of money.  And when dealing with it from that angle, I can say that most people looking for a website don't need half of what they get when they pay for one.  If you already have a myspace presence, and like how it appears, then if you take the css from that site, apply it to a one page site, then direct them to your myspace page, that would be a good start until you have more funds.  You can also look at simple templates, or simple designers like templatemonster.com and templatetuning.com.  For simple things, their prices are pretty reasonable, and they have a wealth of templates.  There's other sites around too, but when I don't have time to find a graphic designer, I use their services and can say that they are top notch.

In any case, whatever you decide, all the best with your band.  If you need some specific advice, you can pm me and I'll be happy to help.

I think I'm with the majority here... extended download protection = ripoff.  Extended warranties- it depends on the type and the item.  At one point I was getting them if they were replacement plans on medium end items, figuring I could always go back towards the end of the warranty... but I never did.  So now I only get the warranties on expensive items, which usually aren't replacement.
