ah yes I remember that one, its a classic :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

That's a story you will tell your grand-children when they ask you (again!) how it was when you still used computers and not everyone had immediate access to the 'Net  ;) :D

The best is what I use and that is ubuntu.

No doubt 'bout it!  :Thmbsup: :huh: :P ;D ;D ;D ;D

« Last post by housetier on September 16, 2006, 01:59 PM »
hmm if the principle is flawed more and maybe better looking sites won't have a positive effect. I mean as soon as I read "create digg-like websites" I thought "oh great, even more wishy-washy sites..."   :o

But thinking about it a little more, if these sites managed to specialize it could become interesting and useful. digg is interesting and popular but is is not useful.

I remember Garfield cartoon:

Garfield is watching TV and of course they show commercials. The ad says "We guarantee this: when you buy our products, we make more money than you!" Garfield then thinks something like "refreshingly honest"

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Stand alone bookmarks toolbar
« Last post by housetier on September 16, 2006, 01:40 PM »
This is quite an interesting idea. Not for me, but I can fully understand why people want this.

Also this STABOOM (stand alone bookmark master) could <marketing-buzz>integrate</marketing-buzz> with the likes of del.icio.us or beautiful ma.gnolia.com so you could not only synchronize between browsers but also between workstations.

And when we make sure to require a lot more features it will never get done  ;) So that idea is just an idea one might find interesting. :)

Isn't there also a setting where you can make the mouse jump to the "default button"? Combine these two and the computer works itself while you watch!

Living Room / Re: The Onion isn't the Only Funny Fake News Site
« Last post by housetier on September 16, 2006, 01:29 PM »
Actually the idea is very appealling. Taken to extremes this could lead to a (I think it's called) micro-census where the constituents can vote on minute matters whereever they are. Of course this requires a reliable identification system and people would need to trust "the machines". (Shall I mention Diebold?)

I find the idea interesting, I am not sure how well it would play out. It seems extreme democratic and usually "extreme" is not good for a society. So yes I turned this into a philosophical and political debate with just a few sentences. But as technology evolves so does humanity...

It's so exciting and I am glad to live in these times. Now if the stupid would stop waging wars we could build a great place on our planet!

Thanks for pointing out the fake news, Ken  :) :up:

Please take the political discussion to this forum  8) Thank you.

Developer's Corner / Re: Nice blog entry on Code Coverage
« Last post by housetier on September 16, 2006, 01:15 PM »
This is what I was interested about:
What is code coverage?

A code coverage tool simply keeps track of which parts of your code get executed and which parts do not.

Now I can decide whether or not it is important for me  :)

if you arrived here from somewhere else than digg.com: Digg This

OK digg is popular so it gets special attention. But there are many social bookmarking sites out there, some work differently or are not necessarily for bookmarks but for news. There are many such sites and not everyone uses all of them.  :huh:

So in case you haven't notied the green link at the bottom of the page, here it is again, in blue so you can social bookmark this thread more easily.  :)

On the page you are sent to you must click again to actually submit this page here to your favorite social site. The "socializer" only gives you a bunch of convenient links, it does not submit by itself.

So Digg it, socialize it, at least spread it: https://www.donationcoder.com/podcast/  :Thmbsup:

What's your del.icio.us username?

It is housetier of course. I don't use services or websites where I can't be housetier :P

I do not have many shared bookmarks...
1015
oh wow your whole collection is rather impressive. I just started to bundle my tags as well which helps a lot.

How do you keep them organized? Sometimes I spend hours to re-tag my bookmarks, or to merge tags. But still I always feel overwhelmed by the sheer extension of my tag cloud.

sri, do you know of a tutorial or a howto explaining "how to proper tag your bookmarks" or something in that direction?

...planets! :P

And these planets make up a huge universe. How about we make a planet for donationcoder.com too?

Planetary Aggregation

Ah, you don't know what on planet earth I am talking about. I am a fan of explaining with examples, so let me give you a few:

Planet Ubuntu
planet.ubuntu.png
about ubuntu, and the people behind it, sometimes very personal
Planet Python
planet-python.png
dealing with python, application frameworks, and surprisingly: ruby
Planet Debian
planet-debian.png
I don't track this one...

Basically Planet is a feed aggregator, it takes various feeds from various sites (mostly blogs) and merges them in one big list. You can think of it as kind of the old-buzz-speech "channel". One cannot directly post on a planet, the content is pulled from other sites.

By now y'all ought to have an idea of what Planet does.

planet-homepage.png

Proposal

I thought we (mouser) could set up a "Planet Donationcoder" where the blogs of the people behind and users of donationcoder.com are aggregated, very much like Planet Ubuntu. It could include technical posts, announcements of new donationware (most likely duplicated in the forum; other solution/idea?), and yes, personal stuff too.

Reasoning

But what if you don't want every single one of your post be planetized? AFAIK most popular blog systems let you assign keywords to posts, or you can put them in categories. Drupal uses the complicated term "taxonomy" and lets you have a seperate feed for every taxonomy term, in this case "USA". I am convinced Wordpress can do the same.

So I could simply use the keyword donationcoder.com or DC and Planet Donationcoder could aggregate every post I assign this keyword (tag) to. Naturally the post can be in more than one category, can have more than one keyword or tag. Still I think most blog systems also have this kind of flexibility.

Furthermore, if simplemachines supports it, even new forum posts could be aggregated; maybe to make the aforementioned announcements easier.

Planet Donationcoder would be very much like a constantly updated version of the introduce-yourself thread. At least that's one way to look at it.

Counter Arguments

People are already busy posting on the forum and might be unwilling or unable to set up their blog just to be planetized. Forum activity could decline because people are busy posting and commenting on each other's blogs.

This could be a trend, a mere hype (however: some planets exist for a quite some years already).

Technicalities

There is a short but complete introduction at linux.com and also a more long one with minute details at Linux Journal. Since Planet creates static pages server load would be minimal, except for maybe increased traffic.

planet-install-simple.png

planet-install-detail.png

Finally

Despite the counter arguments (of which I am sure will be much more) I think this is yet another way to build a community. When a site has rss feeds they can be aggregated enabling me to "monitor" all the donationcoder folks at one place. The marketing term is "bringing them together".

I want to hear your ideas, your criticism, and your question.

Actually, one thing i don't like about vim is the fact that, if you're editing a not saved buffer, you can't open another one unless you save the current one or divide the screen. (or open a new tab ;) )

This is where :set hidden comes into play.

I wish I could tell lashiec about http://cream.sourceforge.net/home.html without giving in to the flamewar that was wished for. I am not sure I should respond to the post at all.

f0dder, what do you mean by "ui code" with regards to buffers?

short

What
A website showing many cute animals
Where
Right Hurr
Sorry, but CUTE?...
not just cute, total cuteness OVERLOAD Z0MG

longer

Somehow I found Cute Overload in the realms world wide internet. I thought it was from someone else's rss feed, maybe via SU. If it was from someone on donationcoder.com pease do speak up!

Cute Overload not only features kittens but has many categories, one cuter than the other:

    * Birds
    * Bunnies
    * Cartoons
    * Cats 'n' Racks™
    * Cribs
    * Cute or Sad?
    * Farm Animals
    * Fishes
    * FREE schwag
    * From the Management
    * Hedgehogs
    * Horses
    * Kittens
    * Pocket Pets
    * Product Cuteness
    * Pups
    * Spotlight: Reader comments
    * The Coveted Cuteness Trifecta™
    * The Rules of Cuteness™
    * Unusual animals
    * We get your letters

There is usually one or more supercute pictures posted with made up "dialogue", then the user post comments, explaining how terribly ubercute this one is or that their heads are about to explode. It's a cuteness franzy.
 :-* :-* :-*

The users take their "craziness" rather seriously, there are even Rules of Cuteness. Well maybe they are not so crazy as they are passionate.
 ;D :D

What makes it worthwhile

You don't have to read so much text but instead get to look at extremely cute pictures of animals. I am always delighted to see a new post coming up in my feed reader.
