Developer's Corner / Re: Wanted: Version Control Propaganda Video
« Last post by justice on June 11, 2008, 04:10 AM »
This is a great generic guide that explains all facets of source control with humour / without jargon / and discusses the benefits and best practices, which helped me and my colleague when we looked at converting to svn. It's not a video but I dare anyone to find a better written guide.

Living Room / good time to buy graphics card?
« Last post by justice on June 11, 2008, 03:29 AM »
I'm looking to buy a mainstream graphics card, currently looking at a geforce 9600 GT but later this month both Nvidia and Ati will introduce new cards. Is anyone here that follows the market and can tell me how that will impact on the price of these midrange cards? I don't know enough about it and have not been following this sector much. Cheers :)

For example I'd want to wait out if prices would drop by 20% or more. :)

why would you want to make it optional? maybe instead allow aliases / plugins to set specific sizes instead?

Yes i've come to the conclusion that unless you're willing to make serious sacrifices (virtual pc etc)only the easier half of my question is possible just now until there's better support from software/ hardware vendors. Hibernation per program would be ace but I don't see it happening (yet)

http://nethosted.co.uk/  gets a lot of recommendation and I can only agree. tickets get responses within 10-30 minutes and manages to keep that small family feel with a total professional commitment. It's in the UK and it's not the cheapest however i'm sure u'd stay under 500 dollars.

Look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ and you'll find good offers and discussion.

« Last post by justice on May 27, 2008, 08:26 AM »
For some reason sp3 solved a problem that I had which was whenever i had a lot of harddisk activity my pc stalled more or less. I had the latest drivers installed but the problem wouldn't go away however with sp3 it is finally sorted, which means that some applications / games that trash the HD now start many seconds quicker and system performance has increased generally. YAY

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Dynamic shortcuts
« Last post by justice on May 26, 2008, 06:02 AM »
I'd create a coding snack in AHK but actually you don't even have to do that. The easiest option is to overwrite shortcuts instead of updating them.
Create a file called Autorun.inf with the following contents:
[autorun]
open=LnkSwitch\LnkSwitchThumb.bat
Keep copies of shotcuts on the drive in the LnkSwitch folder
Then create the LnkSwitch\LnkSwitchThumb.bat file and have it copy the right shortcut to the right folder using a copy command such as
copy *.lnk c:\users\Josh\Desktop /y

Coding Snacks / Re: structured plaintextfile based note taker
« Last post by justice on May 26, 2008, 05:34 AM »
We've started using Microsoft OneNote at work for coding snippets and i was impressed with its collaboration and sharing abilities an the ease of formatting so am now using both Wikipad and OneNote. Onenote is not plaintext, not free, and not as light on resources as any plaintext editor bit it's so easy to use. I used it before but using it synced between home and work definately gives it an edge.

Still use wikidpad too and it doesn't disappoint.

Think this should be in Living room..

So has anyone tried it? I'm still dreading waiting for all my music to be indexed again. I don't mind doing it once, but the process was so lengthy and ultimately I ditched the software - so now I really don't want to try it again unless it's much much much quicker. Lazy but honest.  :-[
Grorgy IIRC there's a setting to write the hashcodes it generates into the idtags of the music so that it doesn't have to rehash the tunes when you move it.

Winamp does what it did best in 2.x and a lot more better especially with the media library of version 5. Just turn of the bentoo skin and revert back to classic which is underlying all the other skins anyway.

Would I like it yes, would it be popular - probably not. choosing ide colorschemes is something you only do once in a long while (months or years), as opposed to for example color pallettes for websites / brochures (every product). So you'd have to balance the effort you put into making the website. I enjoy reading people's blog posts on color schemes and I adapt the default when I install my pc because I never bother to save it out. Making it wider and do the online saving of application settings though  :-*.. (same problem with that actually). But if you enjoy making it I'm sure many people would find it useful, they just wouldn't visit that often for the reason mentioned.

To me the allure was the interface in which it is presented. With farr you need to know what you are looking for, but if you just remember you recently worked on something but not what folder / file it was then recentx should do the job. So does the recent windows folder but that also isn't organised optimally for me. Depending on your level of organisation and memory then you might only need FARR :)
