Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:54 PM »
I have two 24" monitors and have this setup:
One is landscape and sits right in front like a single monitor would, the other is portrait and on the right side. The portrait monitor is used for all the Windows 7 gadgets for monitoring the weather, cpu usage, network, email alerts, etc. It also has the web browser up for quickly looking up info while I'm playing a game (in windowed mode) on the landscape monitor.

When I launch photoshop or lightroom, I use the right monitor for the main program and the one in the center for the resulting modified picture. Adobe has built in support for dual monitors so you can have all your toolbars and library on the non-photo realistic screen.

Living Room / Re: First compelling reason to switch to Windows 7

I imagine the new hard drives (EARS) would be a pain in the yahoo to someone trying to throw it into their OEM Windows Home Server machine which is based on Server 2003. Luckily I knew about the issue and was able to find some EADS drives. It's not stated anywhere on WD's website about this OS. The tech support guy I called to find out about it just drooled at the mouth  ;D

Living Room / Re: Need a new sound card( non Creative)

X-Fi runs very well on Windows 7 64 bit. I know it's Creative but ... perhaps a more modern Creative architecture like the x-fi could solve your problems. I'm running an X-Fi Elite Pro with Win7/64.    5.1 surround sound with both blu-ray movies and the latest games.

Living Room / Re: Anyone playing Mass Effect 2 game yet?

I've played through the entire game once - it's awesome.
Henchmen are useful without micromanagement, gun fights are really fun and challenging, all in all a big upgrade.

The good/bad responses have a great deal towards how the NPC's react to you in future missions. On at least one occasion you have to choose which of your henchmen you piss off, losing their loyalty for the rest of the game.
Yep - I'm a gamer

According to this thread Tweakguides Forum your video card temperature is perfectly fine.

Good luck!

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager

I have a feeling Directory Opus will be the winner.

I doubt it. It may be the greatest thing since sliced bread but it's too expensive. Especially if you have multiple PC's.

Vista   This is my personal experience.
I've been a PC user/gamer for about 25 years counting my C64 days.

World of Warcraft + Ventrilo = Vista's audio layer pegging CPU at 100%
Oblivion = Performance decrease unless Aero is turned off (one of the big selling points for vista)
EAX (creative audio standard that's been used for years) is not supported in Vista. That super fantabulous X-Fi card with 5.1 and EAX effects? Forget it. You get stereo.
The really handy "Windows has blocked some startup programs, click here to view them" window ALWAYS appears when you boot up. Can't select the programs/icons as "I know stop telling me".
UAC windows pops up when running a utility program. Requests permission to run. I like that. But why do I have to do it every single time I run my disk defragmenter? What, there's no option to flag this as a "permission granted always" program?

For an OS that's been in development for 5 years I was underwhelmed. 3 of the biggest suppliers of hardware addons to PC's didn't/don't have satisfactory drivers for Vista. Creative, ATI, Nvidia. The performance is laggy. Aero is pretty but a resource hog. Irritating popups. Absolutely no reason to upgrade from Windows XP in the foreseeable future. It's unfortunate that I did last month to try it out.

For the record my system has the following: 2gigs ram, 3.4G P4, ATI X1900XTX, X-FI, dual 10k rpm Raptors, etc.

That's my 2 cents  :D

You need a special U3-enabled flash drive.  Check out the SanDisk Cruzer Micro.
