Vista is my poison and the update was listed as 'important' as well.  Though I don't recall ever seeing one labled 'critical'.  Just Important and Recommended.

Needless to say, I haven't yet installed it.

Because a number of times in the past, I've had updates that Microsoft has listed but not checked, and most of the time, it turned out there was a problem with that update, so I was glad I hadn't installed it.

I'm a bit puzzled about all this.  Today I was offered an update related to this issue: KB 2964358.  It's offered to people on Win 7 who have an earlier update installed (KB 2929437, I think, which is already installed).  However, KB 2964358 is rated as "important" rather than "critical," even though it would seem that the issue is more serious than "important" suggests.  Moreover, this update was offered to me but not checked, which usually is a sign I shouldn't be quick to install it.  I'm not all that worried, since I almost never use Internet Explorer (it's fourth on my list, after Pale Moon, Opera 12.17, and Firefox).  But I'm nonetheless puzzled.  Needless to say, I haven't yet installed it.

I too was curious and downloaded the WordPerfect file.  I don't have WordPerfect on my current computer, but TextMaker 2012 (which I use instead of Word) normally is able to open and deal with WordPerfect files.  I would then have brought the file into a pdf program to see what I could do with it.  To my surprise, TextMaker choked on this .wpd file.  I tried several times, but I was unable to get TextMaker to open it.

My new phone comes with a customized version of SwiftKey and it's just wonderful. I had bought SwiftKey on a Google sale for either a dime or a quarter a year or two ago. This customized version is even better.

Did you try writing to the company?  If not, that's what I'd try.  If you did with no success, you might try writing to the TalkGraphics forum (for MAGIX/Xara products).  There are several possibly appropriate sections: near the top, there's "Off-Topic Chat."  Since it's near the top, it might give you the greatest visibility.  Under the section "Other Xara Forums," there's one called "Dear Xara" that might be good, too.  And down at the bottom of the list of forums, there's one called "TalkGraphics questions, suggestions, and feedback."  This may have the least visibility, since it's buried at the bottom, but....  Anyway, it's possible that raising the issue on one of the company's forums might get a more positive response, if only to make you stop calling attention to their absurd behavior.

I haven't updated my DO since version 9, so I took the information in this thread, that the upgrade price was 40% off. 89 AUD * 0.6 = 53.4, which converted to USD is $48.4. But if you say the upgrade price is $50 AUD, I'll hapilly update the table (it doesn't change any of the conclusions). Thanks .

An interesting comparison, but are all these prices in the same currency?  I know that DOpus's prices are in Australian dollars, but I don't know about the others.  For an accurate comparison, they should all be in (or converted to) the same currency.

I converted the price for DO from Australian dollar to US, so all the prices listed in the table are in US dollars.

I was looking at the Upgrade price, since I upgraded a day or so ago, and the upgrade price ($50 AUD) converted to ~$44 USD.  I just looked again today, and apparently it's now up to ~45 USD, but that's still not $48 USD.

When I bought DOpus 8, I bought a dual license so that I could use DOpus on two computers (probably my laptop and my desktop).  When I upgraded to version 9, I was pleased to see that the single-user license now covered a laptop in addition to the desktop, so I was able to save some money.  This policy continued in version 10 and, I hope and assume, in version 11 as well (I haven't yet upgraded).  Here's a statement of the policy in the User's Manual for version 10:  The standard license is a single-installation license which allows the installation of the SOFTWARE on one physical machine only, for exclusive use on that machine only, plus one personal laptop owned by and in exclusive use by the registered purchaser.

Only thing with these Returnil type utilities I absently tweak things, then remember changes are discarded.  Supposedly if you quit the app from the tray the changes are kept though.

Lately I've been using Shadow Defender.  It's not free, but it's moderately flexible and easy to use.  You can set aside certain files or folders that you don't want sandboxed, and you can also decide on the fly that the changes you've made to a particular file or folder should be saved rather than discarded when you leave "shadow mode" (the sandbox).  I've used it when making changes that I'm nervous about, or installing iffy Windows Updates, etc. etc.  So far, it's done its job well (knock on wood).

The program I've used steadily the longest is probably the screen capture and image editing program HyperSnap, which I first bought in March 1997 and still use just about every day.  I suppose that the clipboard manager ClipMate beats out HyperSnap by a month: February 1997.  For years ClipMate was my most indispensable piece of software, but although I still have it on my computers, I recently switched to ClipCache on my primary computer, prompted by the unresponsiveness of the ClipMate developer, the disappearance of the ClipMate forum, and the fact that, unlike ClipMate, ClipCache supports unicode.

Other long-term software: Opera, which I first bought in March 1998 and still use, although my default browser is now Pale Moon; Mulberry, the superb IMAP email client that I started to use in October 2000 and continue to use every day even though it's now a bit long in the tooth; and UltraEdit, my text editor of choice since November 2000.  I've used the year 2000 as the cut-off for "long-term."

I see that I posted this without saying what I had intended to about Pale Moon's limitations.  I don't know what programs other than Sticky Password you feel you can't use in Pale Moon.  My experience has been that it works with everything I've thrown at it except 1Password (which I wasn't really all that interested in, since I didn't think it was as good as LastPass).  I've not been limited to the Mozilla-site add-ons: for example, I got both Linkman and Surfulater to work with Pale Moon.

I'm not against paying, but subscription-ware irks me. It makes me feel like I'm renting, which in a way, I guess I would be.

For most people LastPass is absolutely free.  It costs nothing to use it in your computer's browser, and I did so for a while before deciding to send them $12/yr for Premium membership.  That was totally voluntary--I just wanted to send a little contribution to express my support.  They didn't ask that I do so.  It was only a few months ago, when I got an Android tablet, that the Premium membership was needed (and, of course, only if I wanted to use LastPass on the tablet).  Many people I know are not interested in having LastPass on their smartphones or tablets, and they use LastPass on their computers for free.

Yes, I had seen that, but I think it's a dead end. He said he was using Sticky Password. He never said he was using it successfully with Pale Moon. Still...maybe I'll experiment with the config files and see if I can work up a kludge.

I'd just move to Keepass, but I can't get it to work with my college's web site.

I had assumed that if he bothered to join the Pale Moon forum, he was using Pale Moon.  Then again, perhaps he was just a Sticky Password fan boy.

At any rate, if you continue to look for an alternative, you can skip 1Password.  It too does not work with Pale Moon.  It's the only program I've tried to use that does not. 

On the whole, I've been happy with LastPass, happy enough that several years ago I upped my membership to Premium for $12/yr just to offer support.  More recently, I've found extra reasons for doing so: my Premium membership entitles me to use LastPass on my Nexus 7 tablet, and it also gets me especially prompt and attentive support when I've needed it.

I use LastPass, so I haven't run into this problem, since LP works with all my browsers (PM, FF, Opera, and IE) and with my Android tablet.  I took a look at the Pale Moon forum to see whether there was any mention of Sticky Password.  There were a few messages, most of which said it wouldn't work with Pale Moon.  One person (username: Zkoumidlo) claimed he was using Sticky Password with Pale Moon, but that's the only message he ever posted, and it somehow sounded a bit off to me.  If you nonetheless want to contact him (he sent his message on Dec. 2, 2013) you can find the thread at http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3487&p=20294&hilit=Sticky+Password#p20294

Yes, my experience too is that the forum is remarkably civilized.  It offers an especially striking contrast to the Mozilla/Firefox fan-boys forums.  And not only is the level of civility much higher on the Pale Moon forums, so too is the level of expertise, not just from the developer but also from a number of quite knowledgeable and helpful forum members.

Miles, I too use Pale Moon 24.3.2 and have not had any problems.  I switched from Firefox to Pale Moon
about a year ago and have been very happy with it, both with the program itself and with the active participation of the developer in the Pale Moon forums.

MilesAhead, I may have misunderstood you, but I'm using Pale Moon and it does have a status bar and mouseovers for the tooltips (the status bar is one of the toolbar options, just as it is in Firefox, where it's now apparently called the Add-on bar).

Linkman! You mentioned tags in Linkman. I presume you are talking about the keywords? I have used Linkman for a few years now though I must admit I don’t use the keywords much anymore. Rather than a separate field for users to enter keywords, Linkman takes the keywords that the website builder uses for search bots or whatever. And Linkman pulls all of those in for each URL saved. I have some bookmarks that must have 200 to 300 doggone keywords! A lot of sites put everything in their keywords imaginable, which I don’t much like. I used to highlight and delete all the keywords that come in with the bookmark and then enter my own, but that turns bookmark saving into a PITA, in my opinion. I wish the Linkman developers would give us a separate field for our own tags/keywords, independent of the long lists that a lot of sites have. Actually if they would make importing the sites' keywords a user-configured option I'd be tickled!

I'm writing now to address your remarks about Linkman.  What you've asked for already exists.  When I started using Linkman, I quickly found that I hated the junk that often was added by companies to the keywords and description fields, but then I saw that there's a checkbox on the form we use to add and edit a bookmark to linkman that says "retrieve keywords" and  "retrieve description".  I have those UNCHECKED and so I don't get keywords and descriptions I don't want.  The only keywords and descriptions I include are those I put there.  I tend not to use descriptions, but I depend on keywords, which, as far as I'm concerned, are pretty much the same as tags.  So in Linkman not only does the user have control over which categories are used in a search, s/he also has control over what's in the keywords and descriptions sections.

Jim, I understand and share some of these concerns.  I'm not aware of whether or not current owners of Surfulater will get a reduced price for the Next-Gen version, but I expect they will.  I'm also not clear just what features/options that version will have.  At one point, Neville said that users of Next Gen could/would have their data on their computers, not just in the cloud.  If that's the case, I'm probably going to spring for Next Gen when it's available, since I have been extremely happy with Surfulater for several years.  And if Next Gen also works on my Nexus 7 tablet, so much the better.

As for folders vs. tags, years ago I would have been nervous about this, but my very positive experience first with Powermarks and now with Linkman has won me over to the virtues of keywords, which I think are essentially tags.  I can find any of my thousands of bookmarks almost instantly in Linkman thanks to keywords, and I expect the same speed and precision advantages will be true of a tag-based Surfulater.   Moreover, with tags, one can essentially have the same item in several "folders" so one doesn't have to wonder which folder one filed it in.  Another lesson learned from Powermarks/Linkman.  Yes, I have folders in Linkman (as I did in Powermarks), but what gives Linkman its speed and accuracy are the keywords.

I notice that no one has mentioned Surfulater, a program I have used and liked VERY much for several years.  I've never tried RightNote, UltraRecall, or others mentioned here, but they sound quite similar to Surfulater.  That's why I'm surprised no one has mentioned it.  It's kinda pricey ($79 for use on up to five computers), but it's occasionally discounted, and even at full price it seems to me well worth it, though I can understand that the price may be a dealbreaker for some.
