Thanks, mouser and Kyrathaba, for this very useful summary.  I tried to follow the announcements as they came out, but this summary has helped call my attention to several offerings that I missed and may want to try.  And thanks to all the talented software creators!

I've just run into a Google+ runaround.  A couple of years ago, a good friend persuaded me to join Google+.  I did so, using my secondary Gmail account, since I'd read some disturbing accounts of Google+ inappropriately using the contacts in a member's Gmail account, and my secondary account has very few contacts.  A few months ago,  I bought a Nexus 7 tablet and put both of my Gmail accounts on it.  But the account from which I have logged into PlayStore to buy apps is my first Gmail account.  Well, a few days ago I tried to post a review of an app that I bought and love.  I tried to post it from my main Gmail account, but I was told I had to join Google+ to post a review.  So I switched to the secondary Gmail account, only to be told "you have to install the app before you can review it."  Apparently, even though both Gmail accounts are on the tablet, and both are in my name, only the first account is recognized as having the app   I surely don't want TWO Google+ memberships, nor do I want to expose my primary Gmail account to the vagaries of Google+.

General Software Discussion / Re: Too many programs in my start menu!
« on: January 04, 2014, 02:58 PM »
I want to second app103's suggestion of LaunchBar Commander. I love how easy it makes it for me to find and launch programs.  I have organized them into about a dozen categories, such as Photography, Search, Security, Video, Web Tools, etc.  I have included well over 100 programs, and I can find and open the one I want very quickly.

Setting it up does take a bit of time, especially if you have a lot of programs that you want to include. I did it gradually, not all at once.  I can't imagine doing without it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Linkman 8.80 released
« on: December 27, 2013, 08:17 AM »
On Outertech's homepage for Linkman the latest version is 8.9, (has of course "now" been updated), but on Bits du Jour (BdJ)'s homepage you can right now get version 8.91 ("‎26. ‎december ‎2013 22:09:07"). I'll take this as evidence Linkman still is being more or less maintained.
Curt, "more or less"??  In my experience, Linkman is constantly being maintained.  And on the few times I've needed it, I've found their tech support to be extraordinarily responsive.  Linkman Pro continues to be one of my favorite programs.

More news from Macecraft Software, and it is almost as cryptic as the above news.
Yes, I agree.  I didn't/don't know what to make of their message, which I too received.  Something seems off about it.  Then again, they've been doing a number of "off" things lately.  It sure sounds to me as if they're bailing out.

All I know is that I have no intention of making any connection between my [rarely used] social media accounts and Macecraft's attempt to go open source.

Just like "you" I will like to see DonL visiting our forum some more, but at least he is active, and normally he is not this rude. I don't remember anyone from gpsoft ever visiting us. Do you?
I don't know whether Leo (username on this forum is Nudel) officially works for gpsoft; he's an amazing presence on their forums, and he participates from time to time on the Donation Code forums as well.

I have been a Directory Opus user for several years, and although I am happy with it, I still find it a bit overwhelming. It's not impossible that I might have been tempted by a special offer from XYplorer, but not by this offer. I agree with Josh: the offer says next to nothing about what XYplorer would give me that DOpus does not.  The tone of the ad, too, turns me off.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Approach to Spam threads
« on: December 20, 2013, 08:43 AM »
I think if there's no doubt that the message is spam, it should be removed.  If it's not clearly spam but it quacks like spam, perhaps leave it in but mark it in big red letters "PROBABLE SPAM."

For several years now, I've been happily using Surfulater.  At $79, it's a bit pricey, but that price permits you to use it on up to five computers.  I'm happy that I was able to get it for less, but knowing how well it serves my needs, I'd willingly pay the full price if I had to.  What do I like about it?  Well, I can save material from just about any source, online or off.  Most of the time, I simply right-click on an article, or part of an article, or a website that I want to save and select one of four possibilities: Add new article, Add new article plus Page, Attach Page to Article, or Bookmark this Page.  To be honest, I almost always select the first option: Add new article.  Surfulater automatically records the source of the article, and I can easily edit the article,  link it to other articles, add tags to make it even easier to find, etc.  I can also search my database(s) VERY quickly.  And if I encounter a problem, there's a forum and a very responsive developer to turn to for help.

All in all, I'm very happy with Surfulater.  Admittedly, I'm a little nervous about the developer's plans to have the next version make use of the cloud, but apparently one will still be able to have one's database on one's computer (my preference, at the moment).  However, at least for now, I recommend Surfulater very highly as an information manager.

After reading your message, I checked my Yahoo accounts.  I had no trouble reading mail, both old mail and mail that had arrived today.

Living Room / Re: SoftMaker charity 2013: FreeOffice

[snip] 4wd's pdf link shows the difference - dumbed down a share - doesnt open more recent versions of MS Office documents. May possibly be the equivalent of the 2010 version.
The pdf seems to indicate that the free version can read the more recent versions of MS Office documents but can't write them.

The Neat Net Tricks software review panel looked at Chica-PC in 2012.  Two of the four reviewers were quite negative, including one who summed up by saying "I am not sure whether, in 2012, women have different tech security needs than men. I agree that there are people--both women and men--who feel uneasy with technology and would like a company that responds quickly when they have problems and does not offer technospeak, but in my experience ChicaLogic is not that company."

Curt, I think Lazarus (at least version 2.3) was simply a Firefox add-on that may still be available.  A Google search turned up
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lazarus-form-recovery/ .  You might give it a try.

Living Room / Re: I have been pwned
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:51 PM »
My email address (well, one of them  :) ) was on the pwned list, but I don't think I'll worry about it or take any action.  The password I used is one I used only on that site, so it won't do anyone much good.  And the credit card I used when I bought something several years ago was cancelled long ago.  Thus, I think the worst anyone could do with my information is send spam by faking the pwned email address, something that's been done before and is probably not worth their time.

btw does anyone have a Pale Moon favorite reply saver thingy?  You are typing a reply to a post and the connection goes down along with all the text typed.  I tried one in FF but it seemed klunky(and I don't remember the name of it.)
I highly recommend the free add-on Lazarus.  I've used it for several years on both Firefox and Pale Moon, and it has saved me many times.  I haven't tried the newest version (3), since version 2.3 works well with Pale Moon and I've seen no need to change.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android: Multilingual Input Options
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:37 PM »
Have you looked at the SwiftKey keyboard?  I use it on my Nexus 7 tablet.  It claims to support 61 languages, and can handle up to three at a time.  I have asked it to handle only English and Spanish, which I find it does quite well, including offering suggestions in both languages.  More information can be found at the Google Play Store listing.  A list of the languages it supports can be found at http://www.swiftkey.net/en/#features.

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol 29.1 released today
« on: December 03, 2013, 04:55 PM »
Well, until I can see a reason for installing 29.1, I think I'll stick with 29.0, which is what I have on my computers now.  If it ain't broke....

Seems top secret:
http://www.dslreport...-2013-v29.1-released
But this just repeats what was in the announcement on the WinPatrol website.  It doesn't really say what sorts of information "Artificial Intelligence Security" will deal with or what it will do.  I found myself wondering whether it might possibly interfere with the real-time monitoring of programs like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro.  Sorry, but I'm not happy installing mystery programs, even one from as respected a source as Bill P.

I'm not sure how Waterfox differs from other Firefox clones.  I've been running PaleMoon for a while now, after a Firefox update wreaked havoc with my setup.  I've been delighted with PaleMoon, which accepted all my Firefox add-ons and which can run at the same time as Firefox if I wish.  And unlike one earlier report in this thread, I've had no problem doing e-commerce with PaleMoon.  One of the things I like most about PaleMoon is the extremely helpful participation of the developer in the forum.

I updated as well, though I must say I am a little concerned by the description and name of that AI feature .
What troubles me is the lack of meaningful description of the AI feature.  Why bother announcing it without giving us a good idea of what it does?  Or did I simply fail to see it?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Surfulater at BdJ today ($39.50)
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:27 AM »
I'm somewhat apprehensive about SNG, but I'm also somewhat optimistic.  I see how incredibly well first Powermarks and now Linkman (my old and my present bookmark managers) work for me based on the keywords I use, and I think tags will probably be quite similar.

General Software Discussion / Re: software to edit pdfs
« on: November 17, 2013, 03:21 PM »
Thanks, xtabber and tomos, for the info about new editions of PDF-XChangeWhatever.  I've been very pleased with the free version, which I've used for quite a while and which I used a few days ago to fill out a multi-page recommendation form for someone.  But I've never been wholly clear about which versions are free and which are not, and which versions do what.  Even with the chart tomos found, I'm still not 100% clear about this, especially "The FREE PDF Editor download of the PDF-XChange Viewer."  Oh well....

General Software Discussion / Re: LastPass - What are your thoughts?
« on: November 08, 2013, 11:14 PM »
This results in annoying "what do you want to open this link in?" prompts. Even after selecting "Always" use my default browser, I still get prompted which one to use occasionally.
You've just solved a mystery for me.  I've never understood why LastPass appears along with my tablet's 3 browsers when I'm asked "What do you want to open this link in?"  I had no idea that LastPass had a browser.  Many thanks for clueing me in.

Like you, I'm quite pleased with LastPass, which I have used on my computers for five years or so and which I'm now also starting to use on my Nexus 7 tablet.  I do wish, though, that the LastPass folks had done more thinking and testing before they released the most recent update.  I suspect they now wish they had as well.

Many thanks, IainB!  I thought I'd pretty much reconciled myself to using the ugly, annoying new style until I read your message, downloaded the add-on, and tried it out.  What a pleasure!
