Edit: Seems there are two programs called Heroforge to be found on the web. Confusing. Not that much freeware to be found by the looks of it, at least for 4e. I like to keep it freeware as cost can quickly mount up, and the exchange rate  makes it very costly for a hobby. Just buying the rulebooks is a goodly chunk out of my income.

For free mapmaking autorealms is still on the web, though it doesn't seem to be maintained any more. Sad to hear Heroforge is not free anymore.
I have switched to pcgen to maintain my character for a pathfinder campaign. Worth a look for 3.5 and 3e games. thanks for the hard work. Can you report on your experiences on using a laptop as a DM in game? Personally, I found u stare at the screen instead of interacting with the players. Enjoy the campaign.
