My Windows Cursors
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:16 PM »
Howdy All, as per the Help Forum I'm here posting my Windows Cursors for all to try.  I have an affinity for transparent stuff on the UI so you'll see that I use a lot of that here, (I know it's hard to tell that from the previews below.)

Feedback would be great.

The PNG's are previews of what's in the zip.

Thanks again jgpaiva for the help with AutoTile!

Enjoy

I just had a few good laughs after setting some of those animated cursors as the default cursor.. Then i wasn't able to click anything! eheh

This got me wondering: You use animated cursors as the default cursor? How about transparent cursors?

I find a bit confusing using anything other than the default black and white pointer (without shadow), but maybe i'm just paranoid :)

Yeah, typically I use a non-animated one (.cur) as the normal cursor.  A couple sets are "all-animated" so they are exceptions to the rule and sometimes I use em.

I've tried to make it so you could tell where the "point" of the pointer is on most of em, but I see that switching to a left facing cursor, might throw you for a loop.  Did I get you dizzy? :D

But about the semi-transparent ones, yeah I use em all the time, even for my normal cursor.

I have been using this one for the last 8 years:

SNAG-0066.pngSNAG-0067.png
(magic wand)

I use it on both of my PC's. (there is no shadow on XP, even if you have that setting enabled)

Shows up well on both light & dark backgrounds and the animated blinking tip (looks like little yellow sparks) lets me know if my old 9x PC is frozen or just being extremely slow.

I have tried some others, but I keep coming back to this one.

but I see that switching to a left facing cursor, might throw you for a loop.  Did I get you dizzy? :D

Those are actually perfect for left handed people. They make more sense when you are using your mouse on the left side of your keyboard, with your left hand.

nice cursors - nice and visible, thefritz_j.

you've prompted me to dig up some old things i did when windows 95 was all the rage, i.e. don't expect fancy colours and alpha transparency.

nudcon-set01.png

i'm sure there are millions of these things now but back then i couldn't find an arcade nor a toilet icon :D. there are a few more practical cursors i can upload later but i'm wondering why there aren't any cody icons or cursors - would anyone like a cody set?

(i still think the baby crusher is a classic. perhaps i'll have to upload an animated gif version of it.) edit: gifs posted below to show animation.

here are a couple of gifs showing the animation in the cursors above:

babycrusher.gif facehuggeregg.gif (the animated cursors move a lot quicker than these gif files.)

here's a set of animated cursor hands. again, they were done a long time ago so they don't have shadows or anything fancy. the hands do little animations with things like the fingers moving. just subtle stuff mainly.

I wonder why would anyone want an icon of an empty/full toilet. Recycle bin?

that was the idea. but like all of the icons and cursors i did, they were used for about 1 week and then went back to the default plain cursors and icons that come with windows. that kind of explains why i stopped making them.

the type thefritz_j has done are far more practical so i'd favour those over the novelty image ones nowadays.

got any more skateboard ones?

I can imagine a whole skateboard cursor set, doing different tricks for different "cursor" things!

sorry, no other skateboards. if you can't find any online then i'll consider making a few - which tricks where you thinking of - it might be difficult to make them look right as there won't be any feet or legs on display.

I use a program that makes a flushing noise while cleaning, but how did you get the recycle bin to do it :tellme:
That would be hilarious to do it on all my computers at a set interval every day ;D

  • First you need a wav file of a flushing sound. (one attached to post)
  • Then go to Start> Settings> Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices.
  • Click on the Sounds tab.
  • Under Windows Explorer, you will find an entry for Empty Recycle Bin.
  • Click that and then click the Browse button and find the flush wav file and select it.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
  • Go empty your Recycle Bin and hear it flush.  ;D

I don't know if you will hear the sound when running utilities that empty the Recycle Bin for you, but you will hear it if you manually empty it by either opening the Recycle Bin and clicking Empty Recycle Bin...or by right clicking the Recycle Bin icon and selecting to empty it from there.

I'm not really into the custom cursor thing anymore - I have a licence for CursorXP but don't even have it installed anymore. I *did* like changing my cursors under Windows for Workgroups 3.11 a lot - I used to use both ToggleMouse and Plug-In for Windows to do so. I still really miss Instant File Access, Plug-In for Windows, and FM StepUp from my 3.11 days... Actually, I stil use FM Step-Up with XP! I copied over winfile.exe from Win2k or NT (forget now...) and it works perfectly. Plug-In for Windows though... sigh. These apps are why I never went for Windows 95 - didn't feel I needed to at the time.
