Maxthon 2.0 is nice, but they got rid of several key features from the 1.0 series. The one I miss the most is CTRL+TAB and CTRL+SHIFT+TAB for tab navigation. This is a standard key combo in every other tabbed browser, and now they changed it to CTRL+LEFT and CTRL+RIGHT, which is ok if you dont mind it, but I prefer being able to use one hand to navigate tabs.

thanks for the info, masu.

er, might be a dumb question, but do i need the new internet explorer 7 to be able to run the new maxthon - they look very similar.

i love maxthon but i'll keep away from trying the new version just yet if it means installing the new ie7.

now off to fill in the survey...

Thanks for the heads up, these days I just use Maxthon as backup to firefox.  I do miss how much faster it could load a group of pages than firefox does, hopefully there will be exhaustive improvements, including memory usage in the new version.  Can't wait.

You still need a registration email addy. The download will do no good if you dont have a registered email addy with the maxthon folks. Believe me, I tried.

Maxthon 1.x hasn't "clicked" for me yet - I'm still an Avant fan for tabbed IE shells. But 2.0 sounds like it has a lot of cool stuff. I'll check it out. Thanks! :)

Edit: took about 1 minute for the invite email to arrive. Looks like something may have gone wrong Nudone.

thanks for letting me know about the time, javajones.

i think i'll just forget about it now then and wait for the official release. i'm plenty happy with the current version - once you've moved the interface around a bit.

Maxthon seems pretty nice... I like that there's a plugin SDK. And it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much faster than firefox.

But I do miss some firefox plugins in it, and I'm not all that happy about the security holes in IE. So I'll probably switch back to firefox and moan about it's slowness and bloatedness.

Think the interface and speed are the most pros for Maxthon.

For security I think it is the same like FF or Opera if you have installed the latest IE patches.

Hm, I think there's unpatched security holes for IE... so you need to basically disable java and javascript or manage your "secure zones" pretty well. Maxthon (and Avant) do seem to incorporate a bit of extra security, but the thing that made me move to FireFox was that some IE exploit got through Avant, and trojanized my system... that was from a period where I didn't run any AV either >_<

I can honestly say I have not been hit by any exploit in IE. I would like someone who has been hit to show me the vulnerability listing (on securnia, or whatever site) that they were hit by. So far, the only windows exploit I have been hit by was the blaster worm (RPC). You dont need to disable javascript or manage secure zones. All you have to do is practice safe browsing habits. The only time I've even had spyware ATTEMPT to install itself on my pc was when I visited a crack site (yes, I do visit them) and that never got anywhere because of several tools I have running.

I think security is overrated. I think that if we spent more of the time that we do developing "secure" applications on training and educating the end user, that we would get FAR MORE accomplished. Yes, there are unpatched security holes in IE, but I would like to see the numbers of the people actually hit by any of these holes.

i agree with Josh. if things were so bad then no one would be using internet explorer or any of the mods. i'm not saying there aren't naughty things that get through - it's just unlikely or unlucky - i'm probably more likely to get knocked over by a bus when crossing the road but i'm not worrying about it (yes, i pay attention to oncoming vehicles when i need to - and i try to pay attention to dodgy looking websites).

maybe my machine is infected right now. always appears clean on the scans i do.

My own computer has been struck twice (that I can remember). One time was after letting a friend borrow it for a couple hours; checking hotmail and some forums. I think there must have been some malware in a banner ad. Since my friend hadn't browsed any "questionable" stuff, I only noticed the malware after it had deleted a bunch of mp3 and jpg files. Fortunately, the jpegs had been backed up, and the MP3s could be re-ripped.

The other time was when I mistyped an URL and got to one of those typo domainsquat "search engines" that also popped up a couple of alternate pages. I aborted the stuff very quickly, but not before the site had managed to use some IE holes to automatically install some activex control or whatever... was easy to remove and didn't have time to do any damage, though.

My mum was hit by some stuff recently. She was trying to find some online shop selling massage oil (of the non-naughty kind), but ended up on a pr0n site. Again, buncha popups and auto-install-without-asking. No, she doesn't blindly click "install", coz I told her I would lock her PC for a week if she ever did that.

Well, what OS was this on? This sounds like PRE-IE6SP2 since now IE prompts you before an activex control is installed. I have not heard of anyone having an activex control (spyware loading one) being installed without the user being prompted.

XP SP2 with all recent updates. It would seem there's still ways to trick the activex control mechanism. As much as I like IE's speed and low memory usage, it's just too full of holes to be good for carefree surfing.

I dunno if FireFox is that much more safe, but at least it's not targetted as much as IE... yet. The price to pay is of course bloat, sluggishness, slowness and high memory usage.
