But a wireless USB device could serve to replace the MAC address there, and is far cheaper to replace (or easier to conceal) than a full laptop.

Kinda ... The MAC address is hard codded into the network adapter by the manufacturer, and is part of the IP packet header info. However if using a VM there is the option to create your own MAC address for the virtual adapter.

There are some bootable Linux distros designed for secure web use that boot and then immediately launch a VM. You run your browser and email sessions from that.
