Looking for 'new email' using Thunderbird
« on: July 19, 2010, 06:17 PM »
Hello all:
I'm looking for a simple alias that would open a new email via Thunderbird.

If anyone wants to whip up one, I would like to just type in 'new' (without the quotes) and upon hitting enter, open a fresh email in Thunderbird. Keep in mind that I don't use the default path for it. I use 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe'. Also, it would be snazzy if I entered 'new [email protected]' ([email protected] being someone's email addy) that it would open a fresh email already addressed to said email address.

Really, I'd be happy to do this myself if I knew how! If such an alias already exists, do let me know. I've been searching on here, but haven't really found anything.

Any help, suggestions, etc, would be much appreciated!
Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

A start:

right click on your desktop or in a folder and select New and then select Shortcut.

Where the wizard asks for "location of the item" type in "Mailto:"  without the quotes but with the colon.

At the next prompt type in a name (eg NewMail).  When you doubleclick the shortcut, it should open up a new email for editing, using your default mail client.

At least that's how it works for me, using XP SP3 with Outlook Express.

Thank you, AndyM, but I'm looking for a FARR alias, not a shortcut.

I don't use FARR, but mailto: will probably work in a FARR alias just like a path and filename.

Or make an alias that will point at the Mailto: shortcut (eg NewMail.lnk).

there is a default alias in Farr that opens a new compose window based on your input.. is this what you're looking for?
