Thanks for telling, joiwind. I've got a free XML editor named XML Marker. 

It's basic and easy to use, and it hasn't been updated in several years. But it's good enough for my limited needs.

Some notes on trying out XML Marker:

• Appears to write to Registry
• Universal Extractor seems to handle extraction of setup file ok
• Seemed to work fine with FARR's .alias files
• Help file seems pretty decent (even has minor helpful animations )

I think this looks like a potentially worthwhile application.

• Source appears available.
• A bit on the large side, but Universal Extractor seems to handle this one ok too.
• Some registry-writing for this one, but that may be because it is using Qt.
• Mmm, Python (console) and plugins
• Seems fairly speedy, though the help seems a bit heavy.

Seems like fun for hackers

edit: whoa, for 225 MB installed it's a bit more than I need.

edit2: At this point I'm just looking for a means to change program options
without having the use text editor search and F3 over and over.  I don't need
to create xml docs at the present time.

Some initial notes:

• Universal Extractor seems to have worked on it [1].
• Feels light and speedy.
• Help seems unheavy -- though it took me a few moments to figure out how to close it.
• Nice that there is (initially) an option in preferences to choose whether to store settings in the same folder as the exe or in some user-related folder -- a bit odd-feeling (though somewhat understandable) that I no longer seem to have access to this setting
• Didn't notice any registry activity.
• Seemed to work fine with FARR's .alias files

[1] Sorry, I failed to mention in my previous posts in this thread that I have updated the innoup.exe that comes with my Universal Extractor, so if you encounter any difficulties, please consider updating the exe via innounp.

It's been a while since I've had a need to edit XML, but I always liked <a href="http://www.wmhelp.com/">WMHelp's XMLPad</a> best, also freeware. It can validate-as-you-type based on your XML schema file (XSD or DTD) and seemed the most straightforward of all the ones I tried at the time.

Despite all the structured views of the XML managers (editors seems a little too less description) named here, I'm not going to switch from my favorite for handling XML: Notepad++ (aka NPP). None of them handles XML much easier then just like plain text, and the default color settings are sometimes even worst than plain b/w.
NPP handles XML just so nicely, by offering the entire file in the editor window, with all/current nodes (un)collapsible with simple keystrokes, a readable color coding default setting, and what not. And because I use it a lot when handling any text-like files, it is installed on most of my development and test systems, so I usually have it around when I need it

There are two suggestions I have. One is the free, simple, yet powerful enough XML Notepad 2007 from Microsoft. The other is one for professional developers, Oxygen XML Editor. It is expensive, but worth it if you need a professional grade tool for working with all things XML.

I've also come across Liquid XML Editor, it's not free but it can handle files upto GB and TB size.
