Kartal,
I do not know of any editor capable of doing this.
But I have been searching for this feature for quite a while.   ;D

Hi

I guess today is my wanting day. :) I am looking for a general purpose text editor that relies mostly on coloring text to improve readability and usability. I will be using for browsing text or code. What I am looking for is not code highlighting though(might be part of he deal ). I want this editor to be able to recognize indents, tabs, groups, occuring sentences, words, grammar rules etc and color them either randomly or based on predefined rules. For example one paragraph could be orange the next one would be dark blue etc.

Once I improve my coding I will write one myself but I need one right now :)

As you are looking for a general purpose text editor that relies mostly on coloring text to improve readability and usability you can opt for Boxer that which is better text editor .

Broderick, can it color selected text? As I said the color data does not need to stay in the file it can be temporary.

Btw I have found a Vim plugin that seems to put Vim on steroids

http://www.vim.org/s...t.php?script_id=2208

Long live Vim :)

Hey I am trying Boxer editor at the moment. It has been a nice surprise. It has alot of options including preliminary highlighting, also does word pattern based highlight(you can add new words ) any time as well.

I will test it for a while.

Just small note: maybe it was in older versions but newest Notepad++ has nice custom colour styles feature which allows to select some text and apply 1 of 5 background colours to it (via RMB menu). They are temporary but this is a step into right direction :)

Take a look on screenshot (this one is real!):

Yellow rectangle on 15th line gutter is something given by "Change Markers" plugin.

Together with user defined highlight it is starting to be powerfull:

Even "code folding" plays nice:

Hey that is cool, i did not know that honestly.

Me neither :) I've just discovered that (after update and RMB click).

Oh! And if you go to Settings -> Style Configurator and choose theme other than default, than you can customize background colours for "Mark Style X". You can Save changes, come back and load previous one again without loosing your colours set. I don't know why it's not in default one but, hey, it works!

The only thing which left to me is to figure out how to add more of my own styles.
Looks like it's not possible now but I've modified default theme (attached) to contain mark styles at least.
