Best (free) program to recover files?
« on: October 26, 2007, 01:28 AM »
Hello everyone,

Looking for a really good file recovery program. I just deleted about 2 weeks of confusing work via CCleaner's Recycle Bin Tray Menu extension, and Recuva (made by the same people who make CCleaner) can't find it. I used to know a good stand-alone EXE program for doing this, but I can't think of it right now.

I have CCleaner set to just basic delete files, and I know that they are still physically on the disk, so I need to get the files back before they get overwritten. :o :'( :(

Any suggestions/programs that work?

EDIT: Got the files :), I thankfully had (by chance) backed them up onto the root of the drive earlier today. Still, a good file recovery tool would be good to know for everyone just in case stuff like this happens.

Thanks!

There are a few programs that come to mind:

- ADRC Data Recovery Tools
- Avira UnErase Personal
- Restoration
- Undelete Plus

Is it one of them?

i don't know what 'Davory' http://www.x-ways.net/davory/ does that is different to the rest but when i needed to recover a large quantity of jpg files none of the other recovery programs i tried found them - which i find quite bizarre and a little alarming.

which other programs did i try? i can't remember it was a few years back but you can appreciate that it was ALL the free and trial programs i could find at the time.

Davory isn't free but it's worth it for whatever it does. the UI isn't flashy either.

Hi all,

I regularly use the freeware "PC INSPECTORâ„¢ File Recovery 4.x" http://www.pcinspect...fault.htm?Language=1

If it's not overwritten, it can be restored. Additionally, there is a software to restore pics etc. from flashcards. Works like a charm, too.

In case of harddisk crashs (real bad), I use ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery)
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/
With this shareware you can even access harddisk data when FATs are destroyed. Note, you often have only one pass before destroying the disk.

Have fun

Dunno about free apps (you get what you pay for?), but GetDataBack/NTFS is what's given me the best results in the past. Terribly slow, though, scanning as well as recovering.
