Just to chip in - I have used Serif PagePlus X3 for editing some fairly complex PDFs (CAD drawings, forms with images, etc) and have found it to work extremely well. I think there's a trial version and there's normally discounts available from various sources.

Hi

I'm looking for an online source code snippets manager. I've tried CodeKeep (www.codekeep.net) but find it quite slow and the adverts annoying. I've tried Koders (www.koders.com) but can't get past the email verification system.

I wondered if anyone here used or knew of such a system. I don't mind paying a reasonable fee to use the facility and it could even be something that I install on my own web site (my host supports php and MySQL and I use Mantis this way for bug tracking).

At the moment I work in two places and use the excellent Knowledge Base by OzmoSys (www.ozmosys.net.au/) - the only drawback being that I need to remember to add/edit code clips on both PCs.

Although the site is German the applet displays in English. It's a fairly small and simple tool which basically just pops up and shows the volume level/mute status when changed. It also shows a system tray icon giving the same information. It's fairly easy to find the download link on the German site and then install and give it a try.

You also may want to look at Axosoft OnTime 2008.

It's not always obvious from the website but they give a free one developer license. I've used it since version 2005 and (for my needs) cannot find anything better. It stores its data in MSSQL 2005 (the express version is a free separate download and works great). You get the choice of a standalone Windows app, a web app or integrated into Visual Studio. I use the standalone version.

I use AstonShell (and Menu) and yes it is a shell replacement, there are some hideous skins available for it but also some great ones. They also do a desktop manager called AltDesk which I haven't tried but if it's as good as their other products it will be superb. http://www.astonshell.com/altdesk/

The reason I haven't tried AltDesk is that I already use DeskSpace by Otaku Software. It may be a memory hog and it may not have some of the features of others but I love it - it has never caused me any problems and the visual appearance to me is the killer.

By default I have found that synchronisation doesn't work. It is necessary to right click on the appropriate folder beneath subscriptions, choose Folder Properties then make sure that "Synchronize this folder with NewsGator" is checked.

You're probably aware of this but I thought I'd mention it just in case. :)

Forgive me if everyone knows this, I didn't so thought it worth mentioning in case it helps someone with their decision.

I purchased FeedDemon (and therefore obtained a free NewsGator premium account) a short while ago because I liked the way the application looked, ran and presented its data. However, it wasn't until after this that I became aware of the most useful (to me) feature - that is synchronisation.

In a nutshell this is how it works (depending on various preferences but generally as it comes by default):
I have FeedDemon on 2 PCs - one at home - one at work.
If I subscribe to a feed at work it is automatically subscribed at home and vice-versa, same with unsubscribing.
If I launch FeedDemon at work and there are 100 items in a group, I read 50 of them then go home, the 50 I read at work do not show as new items, only the 50 unread.

This is so useful to me as I read my feeds at both places and, to my mind, it isn't that well publicised as a feature of the software. I know it is mentioned but it didn't really sink with me until after I made the purchase.

I would imagine for this to work you would need the premium NewsGator account which I suppose makes FeedDemon not really free if synchronisation is important.

I'm currently testing FileHamster at the moment and agree with previous posters that, for a single developer, it is a good solution.

Just thought I'd pass on details though of another product which I use called Developer's Backup http://www.developersbackup.com. It is basically a zipping utility but the way it allows you to set up backup plans and exclude file patterns makes it very convenient to use.

Give it a try, it's free with a condition that you register every 90 days, or shareware at a reasonable price. I paid for my version and use it all the time.
