I thought wraith808 - and then Mouser in the second post - was referring to auto-play videos that are the site's content, not necessarily advertisements. And just in case they weren’t, I'll jump on that complaint! Websites that set their own videos to auto-play. Also, videos that automatically jump to infinite other videos after the first end. And finally... embedded video players that are set for maximum volume and have no user volume control available!

Grrrr.. getting me worked up here!

Hi all. I read through most of this topic - admittedly quickly - and naturally I found a lot of pros and cons regarding Windows 10. Of course threads like this tend to draw those having difficulties more so than those for whom it is working smoothly. Human nature, I suppose.

I presently have two computers, both running Windows 7-x64: A desktop PC and a notebook, both custom built by Puget Systems. (BTW I can't say enough good about Puget. Outstanding company!) Anyway my desktop is approaching six years young, though my notebook is only two and a half years old. I will probably be looking hard at desktops in the next six months, though the one I have seems like it will run longer than that. Specs of my desktop are still current now, at least current enough to do everything I need. Core i7 Sandy Bridge, 12 processors, 16 GB fast memory, etc. Puget Systems is building their boxes now with Windows 10, but they will still install Windows 7 if requested. Or at least they were doing that when I last spoke to someone there a few months ago.

Would it be reasonable to go with Windows 7 again for a new desktop, knowing that the hardware will support an upgrade to Windows 10 in the future? Or am I better off just getting Windows 10 when it's built?

I have to agree with Notezilla. I stopped using it temporarily when they converted to a subscription basis, but eventually Gautam convinced me to try the newer version and I have been using it again ever since!

That said, I was an early user of Stickies and donated to Tom Revell more than a couple of times as I was a heavy user of it. It wasn’t until I tried Notezilla that I stopped using Stickies. AFAIK Stickies is still developed and is as useful as it has always been.

I have used Nuance's PDF Converter Pro for a number of years now instead of Acrobat. It can do just about everything Acrobat can do - at least for all my needs. I believe that Nuance's latest version is actually called Power PDF now. I'm still using their last version which is PDF Converter Pro 8. It costs a lot less than Acrobat too.

Here's another comment about this from Woody Leonard's blog:

We just learned last week that AVG Free, the antivirus product, does something similar.

I was shocked to learn last week that Firefox – long a bastion of snooplessness – has started using data that it collects to target ads, as well.

He also mentions Firefox as one who is doing similar.

Same here. Excellent ripper/burner! And I have a lifetime license. (Not sure3 whose lifetime... but it has lasted through several changes and upgrades so far.) This one is definitely the best all-around that I have used.

Odd there's no mention yet of Amazon's Cloud Drive. Amazon recently set a new standard for pricing: Unlimited storage for $59.99 per year. I was already using Amazon S3 for my backups (in addition to my 1 TB Dropbox account). Now I have added the unlimited Cloud Drive. Worth a look, anyway.

Also, of course, Search Everything does not index files; it can only search file and folder names. It cannot search any file contents. While file names only is OK for me maybe 75% of the time, I still need to search file contents enough that Everything simply can't do it all for me.

I switched from Microsoft Office 2010 to SoftMaker Office Pro 12 but recently switched back due to a few notable bugs and excluded features that turned out to be too much to accept.

One biggie is that in PlanMaker - similar to Excel - it insisted on saying I was using the German version - but only with regard to the date format. I would have to change it every time I entered dates in any spreadsheet. Support insisted that it should be using the Windows Regional settings on my computer, but that is US English and PlanMaker agreed - except for the damn date format! Also, PlanMaker always puts date columns in "latest date first" or descending order, which is the opposite of Excel. Besides that, while PlanMaker does use functions like Excel, it doesn’t recognize formulae already created in Excel when you import Excel spreadsheets, thus all my existing formulae were considered invalid and I would have to recreate them in a manner that PlanMaker understood - which was not always easy to do.

Bottom line, I wouldn’t always remember to fix all PlanMaker's little bugs before sending the spreadsheet out and recipients inevitably got confused! I reinstalled Excel last week.

I love printed books! And I own a good many of them. I also own several hundred ebooks - actually I think I'm almost up to 1,000 ebooks. Several hundred printed books.

Many of the printed books I own are old and out-of-print. Those aren't available in electronic format for the most part. All of my printed books that also have ebooks available, I also own the ebooks. It’s the best of both worlds! While I love to sit in my easy chair and curl up with a big old printed book - I have hundreds of really neat bookmarks! - I also love - even a bit more perhaps - the ability to open the ebook version on my computer and copy a reference or a favorite passage. Or print out the next few chapters I want to read so I can take it with me to places where I don’t have digital access and I do not wish to carry a few big books around with me.

I guess I'm old enough to still love a good hardbound book and yet also love the convenience of having digital access, particularly for the same books.
