General Software Discussion / Re: So, what pdf reader app is your fav?
« Last post by mrainey on December 10, 2017, 03:24 PM »
If all you're doing is reading and copy/paste, what kind of menu options are you going for?

The Foxit toolbar is pleasant to use and easy to customize.  It gives me one-click access to the following commands, with no searching required.  I use these commands frequently when reading, copying from, or printing pdf files.

Open File (Sumatra has on toolbar)

Text View Toggle

Text Select Toggle

Print File (Sumatra has on toolbar)

Text Rotate

Text Zoom (Sumatra has on toolbar)

I like the way Foxit works and looks.  Version 4.0 seems to be free of unwanted addons.  It's also quite fast.  Sumatra feels archaic and I can't think of a reason why I'd want to use it.

I don't do pdf editing, just reading and copy/paste.  I use an old version of Foxit Reader (4.0) and love it.  Tried Sumatra, but found that I had to make excessive use of the menu to get things done.

For me, 3.0.6.1469 cleared up issues of slow starting and general browser slowdown.

Still hanging with XP, actually.  Probably some day I'll regret it, but no obvious problems yet.

Living Room / Re: List your (wireless) router and experiences

I bought a "Cisco Linksys E1200 Refurbished Wireless-N Wi-Fi Router with 4-Port Switch" for thirty bucks to replace a WRT54GL.

Speed now shows up as 72 Mbps, versus 54 Mbps before.  We commonly have three computers browsing and Pandora streaming on the TV.  Streaming videos from Amazon works great.  I haven't had any problems at all.

I'm not a router techie, just reporting what I've experienced.

I settled for WYSIWYG Web Builder.

Not only is the software excellent, but the developer gives top-notch support (he apparently never sleeps).  The forum is quite active and full of helpful users.  Free updates appear regularly and a new major version seems to show up about once a year, at half-price for current license holders..

I've managed to stick with Firefox 3.6, and am still liking it quite a lot.

Living Room / Re: What are your experiences with payment providers?
« Last post by mrainey on March 25, 2012, 01:11 PM »
I've used FastSpring for 2+ years now.  When I signed up they offered, at no charge, to customize the payment screen to make it look more like my web pages.  They were also willing to do some free tailoring of the customer notification email.  They have handled all taxes and currency conversions.  Their service has been fast and reliable.

Customer service is responsive and I've never had unpleasant surprises that I could attribute to FastSpring.

There are two pricing plans - one is a straight 8.9%, the other is 5.9% plus ninety five cents.

I like 'em.

And what happens if your system goes ka-boom & you have to reinstall your OS?

Make an image of your Windows partition once a week - takes twenty minutes.  I've used Windows for close to twenty years and have never reinstalled from scratch, but images have saved my butt half a dozen times.

Avast is a mess. It has pretty good detection rates, but causes a lot of compatibility issues with other programs.

I've used avast! for six or seven years with no major complaints.  What specific problems have you seen?

Looks like it might have developed from the old Classic Clipboard program, which at one time met my needs very well.  My wife still uses it.

that would have been a nice "thank you.

Agreed.  If everybody chipped in a little, maybe they could turn the ads off.  They're a pretty recent thing.

You share or have shared a living space with a female and still think the Nest can learn to keep things comfortable for all?

Let us know how it works out.  Something that would do that is every man's dream.

Maybe the manufacturers should be required to include a line stating that drinking large amounts of water in a short period of time can result in death (which is true).
