I think Puppy is debian based. It just purrs along using less than 10% of the box's 2gb RAM. Amazing. Pretty, too.

I'm switching a friend on an older box over to Linux. Tired of trying to make W7 work speedily. I've got Puppy Bang on it now, and it's very impressive for speed. I might switch to Lubundu though, for the sake of a smoother ride.

It would be a great thing. I'm repeatedly hearing serious talk of embracing linux - from top-level Windows tech guys. They see where MS is taking this thing - and it looks to be a closed-ecosystem like Apple's, all kinds of information collection, nagging sale of services, and the eclipse of independent software - and they don't like it.

At the same time, Linux for the desktop is ready. It's still not as polished as Windows, but it's not far away either.

Does anyone have any experience with CHS on Linux? I've been working on a VM of Mint 17.1 (mate), in WMWare Player on Win7, all 32 bit. I copied the my documents \ chs folder over to Mint. CHS seems to have picked up the database fine, but not all the settings, which is weird (missing some hotkeys; the Presets are there).

The immediate problem I'm having is in making Ctrl-Alt- hotkeys work. But I'm wondering if the constraints of operating in a VM window have anything to do with that. I've exited CHS in Windows during the testing.

I just went to a permanent clip I have to see if it needed changes, and found that there doesn't seem to be any way, or at least a quick way, to wrap the lines of the clip to the editor's window so I can see all the text. The text is wrapped in the Modify/Format Case popup, but no editing is possible there. Wouldn't a line wrap toggle on the toolbar be a good idea?

Thanks, Shades. I appreciate that info. Metapad would be nice, but what I really needed spellcheck for was theWord, a Bible program. And I don't think there's any way to integrate it with aspell. I also don't see how to integrate Aspell with the Slimjet (Chromium) browser. SJ already has spell checking built in, and it's in real time, but I'm beginning to appreciate having one spell check for everything, so I probably will transfer the chore over to TinySpell, which will hit all progs and function within them in real time. When I tried a file drag and drop onto the Aspell icon, only an empty file was produced. Nothing was accomplished, and at that point I gave up on it.

Thanks, but aspell doesn't seem to be very good for windows. No interface that I could see, and didn't work on the text file I dropped on it.

Ah, sorry I missed that! I was looking for something more than one line.

I got ctrl-alt-s to work in metapad, my text editor. At first it didn't work, then I first Selected the text and it worked, and thereafter I didn't even have to Select the text first and it worked.

I couldn't get it to work in Slimjet (Chromium) or IE10, even with selecting the text. I'm on Win7 x32. It says Spellcheck Completed, but does nothing.

What started me on this quest was a program I use a lot that doesn't have spell check. I got TinySpell Free and it works quite well (except the popup is way out of place in Slimjet). I began to see the benefits of having a system-wide spell check - it would hit every program, and there would be only one dictionary to maintain. TinySpell has a nice feature where you can set it to either generally off or generally on for applications, and then make exceptions. It also does live spellcheck, which is great, but it doesn't correspond with MS Office dictionaries as CHS does (very nice).

And so I'm considering getting the Pro version of TinySpell, but would rather use what I already have first if possible.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing something. The way I see it, CHS's spellchecker is used by copying a selection to clipboard, then running spellcheck on it within the CHS window. There is no way to use CHS to spellcheck text while it's within the target application, specifycally on the fly there.

I ask because I'm considering the need for a system spellchecker.

I see that the exclusions have to do with the target program, not the originating program. Only when I put 'metapad.exe" into the exclusions was the PW ignored by CHS. Putting "HotKeyz.exe" did nothing, so that won't work for me.

Thanks, Mouser. You know, I did know about the prog exclusions, but didn't realize I could use it with hotkeyz. I will try that right now.

Yes, I use LastPass for most of my PWs, but Office docs and LP itself require an external solution.

This is not earth-shaking, but I thought I'd share it.

I use hotkeyz to open programs and do other things. One task I use it for is to paste a few passwords into various progs. The problem is that the PWs are picked up by CHS and stored. My machine is pretty secure, but in principle this is not ideal.

The ideal solution for me would be, I think, if CHS had hotkeys for specific stored clips, and also the ability to exclude these clips from the history. That creates the problem of where to store them. I guess that would necessitate a PW-protected area of the prog.

Not sure that is practical, but I thought I'd share it.

I could also wait to install FRR until my shipping prep, but that's a little dicey. Sometimes (like today) I rush to make the day's mail. I also have FRR on several clone images that that would not work for, unless I both uninstall and scour the registry before a reinstall.

I think the problem is that FRR begins its popup based on time of install rather than openings. Since my clones may be months old, they begin tripping the popups immediately. The buyer therefore has no grace period, and is confronted with the popups just as he is first evaluating the machine.

Actually, I may have to stop deploying FFR. While I think your terms of use are fine, I can't send out units that have popups every time the machine is turned on. It looks like a malware infestation. The AV is doing something similar, and the combination of the two is overwhelming at this point. I hadn't noticed this at first, until I used a clone of an earlier install and presumably clocked enough FFR starts to trip the popup behavior.

Some of these file managers look cool but I don't like the idea of multi-tabbed with only one window pane. I like to use the original freeCommander with the target tab active in the opposite pane. The most annoying thing ever is dragging stuff to a tab in the same pane and it hides in some subfolder in that tab forcing me to waste time searching for it. That drives me nuts.

ctrl-z is your friend. It's a do-over without having to look for anything.

I like the tabs because they save space, while giving full view. And items can be dragged among tabs.

Ok, thanks. That's great. Did I miss this info in the Help file? I did try to locate it. The pre-install feature is interesting.

As for the key, I refurb and sell laptops, and wouldn't want to propagate a license without appropriate remuneration to you. I would think placing FARR on units in its probationary state would be good for your business, as well as for mine. But let me know if I'm not seeing that correctly.

Currently using Clover, which gives a chromium-based tab interface to Explorer, along with Classic Shell, for custom toolbars, on Win7.
