I respectfully agree to disagree and withdraw from the conversation, as it seems a lot like beating a dead horse on a mouse wheel. :)

@wraith808:

How can stealing be justified?

I didn't say he was trying to justify anything- but that you were trying to justify your attacks.  When it comes down to it, unless a process is patented (which I think is stupid beyond reason- software patents stagnate the market), or he took your code and reverse engineered it to add to his product (which I don't think happened either), there was no theft involved.

leave me as a customer cold on PhraseExpress

I just wanted to make you aware that if you wear a fake Rolex and believe it is original, that it is not so original. If you continue to wear it with pride and don't care, well... no problem. In this particular case, we do not share the same opinion about the value of originality and authenticity.

That analogy is so wrong as to make me shake my head.  Trying to apply material concepts to ideas is what makes laws surrounding software and media so convoluted and wrong minded.  If he's copying you, make your case based on price and promotion- not based on attacks.  If he is truly copying you, you get what kind of lag time while he tries to replicate what you have done and make a release?  Without attacks on a third party forum, you had come close to convincing a person that had been using DirectAccess for quite a while (me).  How did this happen?  I became aware of PhraseExpress on Bits and on this Board (in a positive manner).  I also saw other reviews in places.  Just those things began to convince me- the attacks were unnecessary.

It is those attacks that turn me off from the product in all truth...

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows editors - do they have to be so bad?

I wonder why some people are so obsessed with SlickEdit... it basically falls flat between a text editor and an IDE, not really knowing what it wants to be. It's too bloated for a text editor, and lacks the functionality you'd expect of a decent IDE. The pricetag certainly can't be justified when there's freeware editors like Notepad++, IDEs like Eclipse, and the free Microsoft Visual Studio Express...

I use it; I'm not obsessed with it- it is one tool in my toolbox.  But when I don't feel like waiting for Visual Studio to load, and want something lighter that I can just edit/compile/check-in/out projects in that supports multiple platforms in one project, I pull it out.  It also supports brief which most editors these days overlook, so that's a big plus for me.

Truthfully, reading this, I'd be less likely to even try PhraseExpress.  Because the whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  The points may be salient, and the frustration understandable.  But the way in which this whole thing is being carried out- especially since Andrea seems to have backed out only to continue to be attacked, and the attacks justified, leave me as a customer cold on PhraseExpress- and I have been for a while thinking about trying it because of the price difference compared to DirectAccess for a similar feature set.

Day-to-day I use a combination of FARR, DA, and NextStart/WorkShelf/Nexus.  Just depends on what I'm launching and how often I launch it- and whether my hand is on the keyboard or mouse at the point I want to launch something.

Looking at it, but it seems that they have prohibited the page from doing it in any automated fashion on purpose- it also has a captcha that has to be entered.  That said, you could find the window class for the keyword entry box and send keystrokes to it... that would be the only way I could see doing it considering...

DC Gamer Club / Re: Steam, and the gift of game...
« Last post by wraith808 on October 03, 2008, 08:44 PM »
There's lots of games that are only available for download on the internet and aren't present in physical stores - how's this any different from STEAM? Remember, you can "go offline" in STEAM, and play the games without being connected to the internet.

This isn't a dig on steam... I have it installed and love it.  Especially better than D2D since you have one client to manage everything rather than having to download each game individually and not have anything to manage them.  But I did want to chime in on this caveat- I *hate* that you have to go offline when you're online to be able to use offline mode.

So if I come home, and my internet connection is down, and I haven't "gone offline", I can't play any of my games that I purchased through steam.  And that really sucks.  Impulse (stardock's system) isn't like this... but then again, many impulse games don't have DRM anyway...

General Software Discussion / Re: Delphi 2009 (And C++ Builder 2009) Released
« Last post by wraith808 on August 26, 2008, 06:07 PM »
It really depended on the release; it seemed that for a while each odd numbered release was good and even numbered releases were bad, though after patches, 6 was pretty decent.  I use 7 for my few independent projects, and have upgrades, but just haven't gotten into them since I pretty much only do win32 stuff in delphi... for .net, I see no reason not to use VS.

Hmmm... doesn't seen raw beta to me.  I was using tudumo for my to do list needs, but the plain text abilities of this won me over.  Paid $15 during the BDJ promotion, and haven't regretted it.

And as for the Stardock *is* Windowblinds arguments, actually, Stardock was into games long before they were into Windowblinds- Galactic Civilizations is actually the port of an old OS/2 game they wrote...

I like and use EN3... I use it instead of google notepad because it's better done than that app.  I don't like it as well as a desktop app, but for the convenience of having my notes everywhere, it's pretty cool.

I do like it!  It's very helpful when I have to keep track of projects and e-mails and to-dos and deadlines and completions... A couple of my clients have started using it because they liked the reports I was able to give them out of it, and when they asked about how I did them, I showed them Achieve and things went from there.

Living Room / Re: Picking the right mouse for gaming - suggestions?
« Last post by wraith808 on June 29, 2008, 07:15 AM »
I got the G9 & I think its the best mouse I have ever owned & one of its best features for me is the profiles.

All so the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel comes in handy scrolling long web pages.

Just waiting for Logitech to release some more grips but wont hold my breath on that as it hasn't happen yet  :(

Agreed on all points.

I have a bunch of cheap optical wired logitech mice, TBH I can't really feel the difference between a expensive mouse and a cheap 3 button mouse unless you are sniping at extremely long ranges in some FPS

I definitely feel the difference.  Not only in use, but in hand cramps, functionality, extra buttons... yeah, I wouldn't get rid of my G9.  I had a G7 and it was workable as a wireless mouse- mostly because you could have one pack charging while the other was playing, and the fact that they charged *so fast*.  I think that's what the cursor drift problem discussed is all about- low batteries.  On my work system, I use a wireless mouse (another Logitech) and it drifts whenever the battery starts getting low.

But definitely the G9.  Though for a keyboard I went with a Razer...

Oh!  Go!

And I don't see why they *wouldn't* take you up on it... it's not like they were losing business, but more like gaining it.  Oh well...
