What I type in the pop-up prompt is being shown in the comment box in the main SC screen. Just isn't showing as a caption with the capture.

There is an option to specify whether what you type in the post-capture popup dialog gets added as a visual caption or just gets added to the comments box at the bottom.  It's on the "Quick Bar and Post Cap" tab of options:

031113_1333_002.png

Can you check that setting?  However if you didn't change it there's no reason it should have stopped working spontaneously.

It's sort of strange that this hasn't been reported before, but then I wouldn't be too surprised if no one is trying to save to a network path -- or is using a drive letter mapping to do so.

I may have to send you a debug version if you're willing to test, to see if we can't identify where exactly in the program things might be going wrong..

But it would be nice to first get some confirmation that this error/problem is something that happens for any attempt to use a network path, and not just something about your setup that is causing the problem.

I expect that it's some part of my code that is assuming a path should be to a real drive letter, or else some function call checking for the existence of a file, etc.  BUT I believe that the program should be able to handle network paths for the screenshot directory if i can identify the culprit code causing it to choke.

Anyone else tried to use a network path as their screenshot directory?

Hi Alex.

Can you or anyone else shed any more clues on this, like:
  • Is this a problem that has always existed in Screenshot Captor, or only recently?
  • Has anyone else used network paths successfully with Screenshot Captor?

new version up -- in the last version my efforts to allow double-clicking to switch between object+normal mode ended up making it impossible to double-click to edit text boxes :)

Living Room / Re: "Half of our users block ads. Now what?"
« Last post by mouser on March 10, 2013, 08:11 PM »
My natural alliance is with the small website trying to survive on the revenue generated by ads.

BUT, I have a couple of thoughts about this:

1. I'm a firm believer that it is silly to worry about generating income from the percentage of people who are sophisticated enough to circumvent these kinds of things, whether they be paywalls, pirating drm, or adblockers.  It is almost certainly the case that if someone is using an ad blocker then they werent going to click on your ads -- so asking them to turn off the ad blocker is just silliness.  And i have a hard time believing the 50% figure.

2. It seems to me that the entire internet is being built on this house of cards scam financial bubble that we call internet ads.  Once again a bit of marketing geniuses have figured out how to fleece companies by turning our entire internet into a giant advertising factory -- wrecking havok on our ability to find information on the web, and corrupting every source of information out there, and creating huge incentives to lie, create fake posts and reviews, create fake clicks, etc.  And the losers are the honest content producers and consumers.  The sooner we have an internet revolution and get rid of internet ads the better.  I hope what comes in its place is direct funding of content producers by content consumers and that we can kill the advertising middlemen.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Accessing the Comments Field
« Last post by mouser on March 10, 2013, 06:15 PM »
Can anything be added that will prevent the [SCM]actwin,0,0,0,0; from being saved with in the metadata description?

bob, i have improved this in the latest beta.

  • [Feature] New option to tell SC not to save active window internal meta data to file comment meta data; useful if you are using images with an application that extracts and uses file comment meta data.
  • [Change] The internal file comment that specifies last active window region is now written at END of file comment meta data, and is only written if its non-empty.

So, the last change there should solve your problem -- SC will no longer write the unnesc. [SCM] 0,0,0,0 line to the file.  And you can turn off it ever writing the [SCM] meta data info about the last active window if you want to do so even in the cases where there is an active window region within the screenshot.

New version is up.

The big change here is that i've removed the old clipart set, and replaced it with a smaller set of clipart created by DC member App103.  This makes the download a bit smaller, and the old clipart will be downloadable as an Addon pack.  Big thanks to App for her clipart work!

Note that the old clipart directory will be removed by the installer -- if you are using the portable download you can compare and delete your original Clipart\1 directory and some others.

Last call for bug reports!

$30 bucks? how the hell did the pull that off?

Hi dpoplin.

Thats an interesting feature that i will try to add to the "Red Box" region capture mode.

But I'll note that Screenshot Captor supports this kind of "nudging" of regions from within the main interface -- not just allowing you to move the region with cursor keys but also grow or shrink it using alt+shift cursor keys.  The nice thing about getting into the habit of first capturing a large region and then selecting and cropping it precisely from the main window is you can easily zoom and undo.

New upload:

I did notice that when typing in the small comment box (not using the [...] pop-up) that if you type something that is longer than the box the text runs under the [...] button and you do not see it. As you type more it will start to scroll again but the last couple of characters remain hidden.

should be fixed now.

Regarding my post on SC going behind the Firefox window, it isn't happening repeatably. Sometimes the main screen holds and sometimes it goes back behind.
Any suggestions to try?

should be fixed now.

you can also now ctrl+A from the edit box itself (before clicking ... button).
9861
Ctrl+A both selects AND copies at the same time
is this true? it shouldn't be.  Ctrl+A should just select all.
9862
Another note about the version I just uploaded -- it includes these new improvements:
  • [Improvement] When switching out of object mode, if an object was selected, it's bounding region becomes selected in normal mode; especially useful for applying effects.
  • [Improvement] If user tries to select a region in Object selection mode containing no objects, SC automatically switches to region selection mode and selects region.
  • [Improvement] Double-clicking an object in region-select mode will now switch to object mode and select the object under cursor.

The middle item is the most important one I think.  I know that new users were becoming confused when they found themselves in "object selection mode" after adding an object, and didn't know how to get out and back into normal region selection mode.  Now if you select a region in object mode that has no objects in it, you'll be popped back out to normal selection mode.  I hope this will save new users from some pain.
9863
bob, try the new version i just uploaded.
the expanded text edit memo now should support some keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+A to select all text, as well as Alt+letters to perform some quick actions via buttons, and ctrl+Enter and Escape to accept or reject edits quickly.
9864
Thank You for adding this feature to be able to add the secondary caption in the pop-up prompt. It makes commenting the captures much easier now.

You can thank DC member Cranioscopical for that -- it was his good idea.

Ctrl+A in in caption box shouldn't be hard to add.

I don't know the answer to your question but its just another reminder of how pervasively inappropriate this situation is that we find ourselves in with Google.

Google wants to track everything you search for (and write about in your emails) so that it can serve up advertisements based on what you type, on ads on every page on the internet.

That means that *every* site you visit can get a good idea of your interests by examining the ads that google wants to display on their page -- even if they don't actually care about showing you the ads themselves.
9866
New minor version up with a couple minor fixes, and also one neat new feature -- a new special fx operation that will remove the contents of a selected region and replace it with surrounding colors.

It's surprisingly useful.

Now it's not going to work perfectly all the time -- but i think much of the time it will allow you to very easily remove unwanted text or regions of an image without it looking as obvious as the blur tool looks.

Let me know what you think -- I may try to add some options for the tool later.

My plan is to release this version as an official non-beta on sunday evening / monday morning, barring the discovery of any significant remaining bugs.
9867
WordPress is so popular now that even my cat knows how to install and use it.

ha!  ;D
9868
New version uploaded that should fix the double-line caption stuff -- thank you guys for helping me track this one down!
9869
ok i've reproduced the double spaced caption bug, whew!  now that i can reproduce it, a fix can't be far off -- stand by.
9870
should be fixed now.
9871
bubbajunk,

Thanks for the reports.
#1-3: i know about and am going to try to fix in future versions since they are not showstoppers.
#4: thanks, should be fixed now.
9872
v3.23 is now up.

I spent an entire day fixing the graphics library code that handles drawing objects with partial transparency in order to speed up the rendering/saving of files where objects are on top of semi-transparent areas.  Painful but I think I have it working well and fast enough.  I never realized this was a problem until we started playing with captions over a transparent area..

Note that for most users this is a moot issue since most of the time you don't want a transparent background, you want a white canvas background, etc.

This is really the home stretch for this beta version and I can't wait to release it publicly as a non-beta.  So much old code got restructured with this version, which caused lots of little things to stop working.  I really appreciate all the testing and bug reports -- please keep them coming.
9873
By the way, there's a new option to help you visualize background transparency under "More Interface Options" -- choose Chessboard for background style.  This will only help you when you have transparent areas on your screenshot (for example transparent captions at bottom, etc.).
9874
im still chewing it over.

try downloading new version -- see what you think of thumbnail captions now.
9875
What do the %_num% and %bnum% options do?

%_num% will add _002 and so on, but ONLY if needed.  So your first file will be called "myscreenshot.png" and your second will be "myscreenshot_002.png" and the next "myscreenshot_003.png", etc.

%bnum% is identical but without the "_" character.

4) I don't know if I noticed this one before or not, but the filenames in my thumbnail panel are getting clipped off
thanks for letting me know -- i've been trying to tweak that thumbnail panel to get it to not waste so much whitespace.. looks like i have to tweak some more.
